Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. Development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.

In this paper, a novel learning method for special Bayesian networks which consist of noisy-OR and noisy-AND nodes is introduced. This method can learn networks with hidden variables and discover hidden variables when necessary. Compared with previous techniques for learning Bayesian networks, it uses the information in the data to guide the search for useful revisions, and can greatly improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Furthermore, this method can also be used for theory refinement. The experiments demonstrate that its performance is comparable to that of other existing hybrid theory refinement systems, while the networks produced by this method have more precise semantics and are more easily understood. In addition, this method also provides a direct mechanism for incorporating knowledge expressed as propositional Horn-clause rules into a Bayesian network. This mechanism could potentially ease the process of building Bayesian networks.

Path-constrained robot trajectory planning in the vicinity of ordinary singularities is studied in this paper. First, the desired end-effector path is parameterized with an untimed variable q/sub 0/, by which the robot kinematics can be formulated as a nonlinear equation. The solution to this equation forms a spatial curve in the augmented joint space. Then the path-tracking problem can be fulfilled by computing the curve solution numerically. This produces a pseudo trajectory with respect to an artificial independent parameter s, which represents the arc-length of the solution curve. The trajectory with respect to time can be obtained naturally by arbitrarily assigning s(t). Numerical simulations are carried out to verify the algorithm.

(2000) provided another idea to improve these base classifiers: combining two or more weak hypotheses as a single base classifier. Its main problem is that the amount of hypotheses selected to combine is determined not by their importance, but by the boosting iteration times already performed. This paper proposes two dynamical ways for combining any number of hypotheses according to their importance. Experimental results show that the new ideas do improve the performance of boosting.

This paper presents a new soliton approach to hyper-distributed hyper-parallel self-organizing dynamic scheduling for task allocations among rational autonomous agents in a multi-agent system (MAS). This approach can overcome many drawbacks of other mechanisms currently used for coalition formation and cooperation in MAS. The thorny problems, such as overabundant bid, social behaviors, colony intelligence, variable neighbors, and interdepen-dency, can easily be treated by using the proposed approach, whereas they are very difficult for other conventional approaches. The simulation on a distributed transport scheduling sys-tem shows the soliton approach featured by hyper-parallelism, effectiveness, openness, dynamic alignment and adaption.
