Rendering large-scale forest scenes in real-time is a challenging problem, since the geometric complexity is far beyond the capabilities of current graphics hardware. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that adopts a dynamic quad stream residing on GPU buffers for view-dependent forest rendering. The incremental quad stream updating process is well-suited to the massively parallel architecture of the GPU pipeline, and it requires no continuous data exchange between CPU and GPU. The implementation of the algorithm is quite straightforward. Despite its simplicity, the algorithm achieves good performance with low memory, storage, and CPU costs.

We analyze the luminance uniformity and color uniformity of the color volumetric 3D display system based on a rotating LED screen. We first analyze the luminance and chromatic coordinate distribution for one RGB cube with different horizontal and vertical view angles and also luminance and color display effect for 64 spatial distributing RGB color cubes. To evaluate the luminance uniformity and color uniformity of 3D image with different display positions, we present three indexes for them respectively. For luminance uniformity, the indexes are the average luminance, the normalized luminance difference, and the average normalized luminance difference. And for color uniformity the indexes are the average of color difference, the maximum color difference, and the variance of color difference. By these evaluation parameters, we can compare luminance and color uniformity in different 3D volumetric display systems.

Current active 3D range sensors, such as time-of-flight cameras, enable acquiring of range maps at video frame rate. Unfortunately, the resolution of the range maps is quite limited and the captured data are typically contaminated by noise. We therefore present a simple pipeline to enhance the quality as well as improve the spatial and depth resolution of range data in real time by up sampling the depth information with the data from high resolution video camera and utilizing a new strategy to increase the sub-pixel accuracy. Our algorithm can greatly improve the reconstruction quality, boost the resolution of the range data to that of video sensor while achieving high computational efficiency for a real-time application.

Based on researches of constraints among roles and types of inconsistency among constraints, this paper introduces corresponding formal rules, rule based reasoning and corresponding methods to detect, avoid and resolve these inconsistencies. Finally, the paper introduces briefly the application of consistency maintenance in ZD PDM, an enterprise oriented product data management (PDM) system.

Providing a wider movement range of virtual camera is an unsolved problem for state-of-the-art image-based rendering system. In this paper, we present a new image based rendering technology called panoramic mosaics of slit images with depth that can provide large virtual camera motion region for some scenes. By limiting camera motion to a horizontal plane only, a slit image with united depth value is used as the rendering element. The panoramic mosaics of slit images with depth are easy to capture, and the data size is as small as that of panorama. We present here the capturing, construction as well as rendering process of panoramic slit images mosaic with depth. A prototype concurrent engineering tool has been developed for the preliminary design of composite topside structures for modern navy warships. This tool, named GELS for the Concurrent Engineering of Layered Structures, provides designers with an immediate assessment of the impacts of their decisions on several disciplines which are important to the performance of a modern naval topside structure, including electromagnetic interference effects (EMI), radar cross section (RCS), structural integrity, cost, and weight. Preliminary analysis modules in each of these disciplines are integrated to operate from a common set of design variables and a common materials database. Performance in each discipline and an overall fitness function for the concept are then evaluated. A graphical user interface (GUI) is used to define requirements and to display the results from the technical analysis modules. Optimization techniques, including feasible sequential quadratic programming (FSQP) and exhaustive search are used to modify the design variables to satisfy all requirements simultaneously. The development of this tool, the technical modules, and their integration are discussed noting the decisions and compromises required to develop and integrate the modules into a prototype conceptual design tool.

A shading model which accounts for both diffuse reflection and specular reflection caused by any ideal diffuse polygonal light sources is derived. The diffuse reflection component is accurately represented in an analytic form, while the specular reflection component is represented by an area integration taking Phong’s specular model as the kernel. To simplify the evaluation of the specular term, we adopt Taylor’s series to approximate the integration. The analytic representations-of both terms involve no complex coordinate transformation and the images generated by the method are very realistic. Finally, a shadow detection algorithm is presented for the polygonal environment. .The precise umbra and penumbra can be produced. Results show great potential of our method.
