Alteration of the health effects of bioaerosols by chemical modification in the atmosphere:A review

Bioaerosols are a subset of important airborne particulates that present a substantial human health hazard due to their allergenicity and *** reactions in atmospheric processes can significantly influence the health hazard presented by bioaerosols;however,few studies have summarized such alterations to bioaerosols and the mechanisms *** this paper,we systematically review the chemical modifications of bioaerosols and the impact on their health effects,mainly focusing on the exacerbation of allergic diseases such as asthma,rhinitis,and ***,nitration,and oligomerization induced by hydroxyl radicals,ozone,and nitrogen dioxide are the major chemical modifications affecting bioaerosols,all of which can aggravate allergenicity mainly through immunoglobulin E *** processes can even interact with climate change including the greenhouse effect,suggesting the importance of bioaerosols in the future implementation of carbon neutralization *** summary,the chemical modification of bioaerosols and the subsequent impact on health hazards indicate that the combined management of both chemical and biological components is required to mitigate the health hazards of particulate air pollution.

Impacts of o-cresol spill on composition and function of river sediment and soil microbial communities

o-Cresol is a toxic substance with strong irritating and corrosive effects on skin and mucous membranes. To date, information on the effects of o-cresol on microbial communities in the natural environment is very limited. In the present study, 16S rRNA sequencing and metagenomic technique were carried out to elucidate the effects of the o-cresol spill on microbial communities in river sediments and nearby soils. o-Cresol spill induced the increase in the relative abundance of phyla Planctomycetes and Gemmatimonadetes, suggesting their resilience to o-cresol-induced stress. Uncultured Gemmatimonadetes genera and the MND1 genus exhibited enrichment, while the Pseudomonas genus dominated across all samples, indicating their potential pivotal roles in adapting to the o-cresol spill. Moreover, o-cresol spill impaired the metabolic functions of microbes but triggered their defense mechanisms. Under o-cresol pressure, microbial functions related to carbon fixation were upregulated and functions associated with sulfur metabolism were downregulated. In addition, the o-cresol spill led to an increase in functional genes related to the conversion of o-cresol to 3-methylcatechol. Several genes involved in the degradation of aromatic compounds were also identified, potentially contributing to the biodegradation of o-cresol. This study provides fresh insights into the repercussions of an abrupt o-cresol spill on microbial communities in natural environments, shedding light on their adaptability, defense mechanisms, and biodegradation potential. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Temporal variations, sources, and regional transport of carbonaceous species in PM2.5 in a northern China city: the role of domestic heating

Domestic heating is an important source of carbonaceous aerosols in northern China in winter. The seasonal variations, sources, and regional transport of carbonaceous species in PM2.5 in Yuncheng in the winter and summer of 2020–2021 were investigated in this study, with a particular focus on the role of domestic heating. Meanwhile, the pollution characteristics of carbonaceous aerosols in Beijing in winter were also investigated for comparison. The mass concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) and their contributions to PM2.5 were significantly enhanced during the heating period compared to other sampling periods in Yuncheng, however, no obvious differences were observed before and during the heating periods in Beijing. Source apportionment results showed that the heating related emission (50.9%) was the dominant source of total carbon in Yuncheng in the heating period, while vehicular emission (49.6%) was dominant in summer. Combing the positive matrix factorization (PMF) and potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis, it was concluded that both local and regional heating activities contributed highly to carbonaceous aerosols in Yuncheng. It would be therefore of great environmental benefits to promote the clean residential heating transition in Yuncheng and other similar cities. To unleash the scheduling potential of flexible resources, an enhanced flexibility approach is proposed, which takes into account various flexible resources including electric vehicle (EV) clusters. Initially, the dispatch potential of individual EV users is predicted based on historical data regarding travel habits and charging station parameters. Subsequently, the power and energy-feasible regions are constructed to quantify the flexibility of the EV clusters. To enhance the overall system's operational efficiency and flexibility, various constraints related to flexibility resources are taken into consideration, including the source-grid-load-storage aspects. As a result, a multidimensional flexibility resource supply-demand model is established and the analysis target cascading method is applied to solve this sophisticated model. Finally, the modified system is used to test and analyze the proposed model and method. The results demonstrate the proposed model and method can enhance the operational flexibility of high-proportion new energy distribution networks. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. A global perspective on microbial risk factors in effluents of wastewater treatment plants

To ensure frequency stability in power systems with high wind penetration,the doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG)is often used with the frequency fast response control(FFRC)to participate in frequency ***,a certain output power suppression amount(OPSA)is generated during frequency support,resulting in the frequency modulation(FM)capability of DFIG not being fully utilised,and the system’s unbalanced power will be increased during speed recovery,resulting in a second frequency drop(SFD)in the ***,the frequency response characteristics of the power system with DFIG containing FFRC are ***,based on the analysis of the generation mechanism of OPSA and SFD,a combined wind-storage FM control strategy is proposed to improve the system’s frequency response *** strategy reduces the effect of OPSA and improves the FM capability of DFIG by designing the fuzzy logic of the coefficients of FFRC according to the system frequency index in the frequency support *** the speed recovery stage,the energy storage(ES)active power reference value is calculated according to the change of DFIG rotor speed,and the ES output power is dynamically adjusted to reduce the ***,taking the IEEE 39-bus test system as an example,real-time digital simulation verification was conducted based on the RTLAB OP5707 simulation *** simulation results showthat theproposedmethodcan improve theFMcapabilityofDFIG,reduce the SFDunder thepremise of guaranteeing the rapid rotor speed recovery,and avoid the overshooting phenomenon so that the systemfrequency can be quickly restored to a stable state.

Torque allocation of four-wheel drive EVs considering tire slip energy

With the increasing peak torque of the in-wheel motor, the tire slip energy dissipation becomes as considerable as the motor energy loss. The actuation redundancy in four-wheel drive electric vehicles has the innate advantage of reducing the energy dissipation of the tire slip according to different criteria. This study innovatively optimizes the energy loss of the motor and the slip energy consumption of the tire under a unified framework. A more accurate calculation model of the tire slip force and slip energy is adopted in the cost function. Its feasibility and potential are shown through simulation case studies based on different road adhesion coefficients among three allocation methods: considering both motor energy loss and tire slip loss, only considering the motor energy loss, and only considering the axis load distribution. The simulation results demonstrate that the torque allocation method considering both motor energy loss and tire slip loss can dramatically reduce the tire slip energy and tire wear with an acceptable motor energy efficiency sacrifice compared to the present allocation algorithms.

GD-YOLO:A Network with Gather and Distribution Mechanism for Infrared Image Detection of Electrical Equipment

As technologies related to power equipment fault diagnosis and infrared temperature measurement continue to advance,the classification and identification of infrared temperature measurement images have become crucial in effective intelligent fault diagnosis of various electrical *** response to the increasing demand for sufficient feature fusion in current real-time detection and low detection accuracy in existing networks for Substation fault diagnosis,we introduce an innovative method known as Gather and Distribution Mechanism-You Only Look Once(GD-YOLO).Firstly,a partial convolution group is designed based on different convolution *** combine the partial convolution group with deep convolution to propose a new Grouped Channel-wise Spatial Convolution(GCSConv)that compensates for the information loss caused by spatial channel ***,the Gather and Distribute Mechanism,which addresses the fusion problem of different dimensional features,has been implemented by aligning and sharing information through aggregation and distribution ***,considering the limitations in current bounding box regression and the imbalance between complex and simple samples,Maximum Possible Distance Intersection over Union(MPDIoU)and Adaptive SlideLoss is incorporated into the loss function,allowing samples near the Intersection over Union(IoU)to receive more attention through the dynamic variation of the mean Intersection over *** GD-YOLO algorithm can surpass YOLOv5,YOLOv7,and YOLOv8 in infrared image detection for electrical equipment,achieving a mean Average Precision(mAP)of 88.9%,with accuracy improvements of 3.7%,4.3%,and 3.1%,***,the model delivers a frame rate of 48 FPS,which aligns with the precision and velocity criteria necessary for the detection of infrared images in power equipment.

Analysis of Emerging Contaminants in Surface Water,Aquaculture Ponds and Wastewater Treatment Facilities in the Taige Canal Basin

Emerging contaminants(ECs)have aroused great concerns due to their widespread presence as well as their potential health and ecological *** monitoring data about ECs in Chinese rural areas are still *** this study,Taige Canal basin was selected as a typical rural area for a pilot *** occurrence of ECs,including pharmaceutical and personal care products(PPCPs),pesticides,plasticizers and flame retardants,in surface water and aquaculture ponds,as well as in wastewater treatment facilities,was comprehensively *** effectiveness of rural decentralized wastewater treatment facilities and centralized wastewater treatment plant(WWTP)in removing ECs was also *** 126 commonly used pesticides for target analysis,25 compounds were detected in surface water with high frequency of>80%.Besides,55 PPCPs,21 pesticides and 18 other industrial products were identified by non-target analysis using high resolution mass spectrometry(HRMS).Totally 18 compounds were detected in surface water with a frequency of>60%and 6 of them were found in all samples,including irbesartan,valsartan,propazine,buprofezin,bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate(DEHP)and tri-(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate(TCPP),with mean concentrations of 3022,195,125,218,3738 and 545 ng/L,*** are 29 compounds(11 PPCPs,8 pesticides and 10 other industrial products)detected in water samples from the aquaculture ponds,of which 13 compounds were found in all three *** removal efficiencies of ECs in wastewater treatment facilities are generally limited,except valsartan(82%–86%),nobiletin(100%)and diisodecylphthalate(100%)were found to be significantly removed.
