Energy Internet (EI) is an inevitable development trend of energy systems under the background of technology development, environmental pressure and energy transition. Multi-energy flow coupling is one of the key characteristics of the EI, which enhances the interoperability of different types of energy flows while consequently increases the probability of cascading failures. Therefore it is of great significance to study the multi-energy flow fault diagnosis of the EI to ensure its safe and stable operation as well as the continuous energy supply. This paper introduces the concept of multi-energy flow cascading fault of the EI for the first time. The energy internet framework for multi-energy flow cascading fault diagnosis is firstly proposed, and then characteristics of various energy networks in the EI are analyzed from the perspective of fault diagnosis. Finally, future research prospects are discussed. © 2017 IEEE.

Implementation and value of power hardware in the loop testing bed for wind turbines integrated into grid

Wind power providing grid support is an interesting topic for the power grid stable operation, due to the large-scale power electronics devices integrated, advanced simulation and experiment methods are required to deal with the complexity. This study presents a power hardware in the loop (PHIL) testing bed implementation method for wind turbines grid integration. The components (emulated physical wind turbine, real-time simulator and power interface) and the configuration of the testing bed are listed from the view point of power flow and signal flow. Stability, accuracy, and safety considerations for the implementation of wind turbine PHIL testing bed are proposed, in order to accurately emulate the system and wind turbine behaviours. Inertial control strategies of wind turbines are validated, and simulation results show the value of PHIL simulation testing bed, which can be a useful tool for testing and evaluation of the electromechanical transient dynamic interaction between wind turbine/wind power plant with advanced functions and power system.

Global synchronous discontinuous pulse width modulation method with fast calculation capability for distributed three-phase inverters

When multiple distributed converters are integrated, the high frequency harmonics will randomly accumulate at the point of common coupling(PCC). This paper proposes a new fast global synchronous discontinuous pulse width modulation(GSDPWM) method of threephase inverters to effectively attenuate the high frequency current harmonics at PCC. Firstly, the basic principle and the realization method of GSDPWM for three-phase inverters are explained, which can be employed for different modulation types. Then a fast calculation method,which can equally derive the minimized total harmonic distortion(THD) of total current, is proposed to release the calculation burden. Finally, MATLAB simulations and experimental results are presented to verify the performance of GSDPWM.

How Shale Gas will Shape China's Future? an Evaluation Based on Dynamic Energy-CGE Model

The potential of shale gas development in China is huge but research that assesses the impacts of shale gas development on China's economy and carbon emissions are rare. This paper used a dynamic CGE model with energy and carbon emission modules to evaluate the impacts under different scenarios. The results implied that large scale of shale gas development will stimulate economy, when the supply of shale gas increases by 500% from 2010 to 2030, the GDP in 2030 will be 2.59% higher than BAU scenario; technology change that reduces the costs of shale gas utilization will not further stimulate economic growth on the basis of large scale exploitation, but will improve the diffusion of gas and make the energy structure cleaner therefore contribute the carbon mitigation. Hence, it is important for policy makers to take into account the varied effects of different shale gas promotion approaches.

Impact of Household Consumption Activities on Energy Consumption in China—Evidence from the Lifestyle Perspective and Input-output Analysis

The household sector has become the second largest consumer of final energy, ranking only next to the industrial sector in China. Except for the direct energy consumption of household sector, people's consumption activities also indirectly affect the energy consumption of multiple production sectors. This paper investigates the direct and indirect impact of household consumption activities on energy consumption in China from the consumers’ lifestyle perspective based on the input-output analysis. The results show that China's energy consumption caused by household consumption activities in 2012 accounts for 24.7% of the total finial energy consumption. The indirect energy consumption of household consumption activities is 1.35 times more than the direct energy consumption. Residential activities cause the most indirect energy consumption, while the smelting and pressing industry of ferrous metal is the most energy-consuming industrial sector influenced by household consumption. We also find that the low-carbon pattern and accelerated technological advance can reduce the indirect energy consumption effectively by scenario analysis.

Achieving China's INDC: Biomass Development and Competition for Land

In order to mitigate the climate change, China submitted its ambitious goal of INDC to the UNFCCC in 2015. In INDC, China has promised to lower the carbon dioxide emission and increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption. Such an emissions trajectory for the China's INDC would require marked development of biomass power. However, there are few research has quantitatively calculated the biomass demand and supply under INDC target. To fill this gap, we developed an integrated model which coupled the MESEIC model and two types of biomass supply database. The study results indicate that, to achieve the INDC target, it is noteworthy that the share of biomass is predicted to increase from 0.18% in 2010 to 10.20% and 20.06% in 2030 and 2050 respectively. However, current field residue in China is not enough to meet the biomass need in the northeast, northwest and south region. In order to meet the biomass need and ensure the food security, the grass land in Inner Mongolia, the forest in Heilongjiang, the grassland in the northwest region and the forest in the south region should be developed to produce biomass material.

Measurement-based solution for low frequency oscillation analysis

This paper presents a measurement-based solution for low frequency oscillation(LFO) analysis in both real time monitoring and off-line case study. An online LFO property discrimination method is developed first,which alternately uses empirical mode decomposition(EMD)/Hilbert transform(HT) and square calculation to process the measurement data. The method magnifies the variation trend of oscillating variables to accurately discriminate the property of the oscillation. Subsequently, an oscillation source locating method for the forced oscillation(FO) and a strongly correlated generator identification method for the weak damping oscillation(WDO) are proposed. Finally, numerical study results on a test system of the isolated Changdu grid in Tibet validate the proposed methods.

With the construction of global energy interconnection, plenty of fluctuating renewable energy access the distribution network, power system dynamic behavior is more complex. The wide-area measurement system light (WAMS Light) records the actual variation of the grid in the distribution network with high accuracy. Exploring the value of high-density, large-scale synchronous data and comprehensive visualization can efficiently reflect the behavior of the system. An open and interactive WAMS Light data visualization platform (WAMSLVP) is built with three-tier structure. WAMSLVP is designed by analysing the function requirements in multi-information fusion, multi-angle analysis, multi-layer integration, program flexible access based on the characteristics of distribution network. And WAMSLVP integrates the frequency, voltage magnitude, angle phase and other power information with the non-power information as multiple layers to compositive display based on geographic information system (GIS), facilitating the dispatchers simultaneously capture multiple information from different analysis just by a glance.

Using Sectoral Approach as Complement to the INDC Framework: An Analysis Based on the CGE Model

Although 169 Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) have been submitted up to June 2016, there is still around 1.2-1.7 Gillion tons’ CO 2 emission gap in 2030 to realize the 2 °C target. The main objectives of this paper are to analyze the significance and feasibility of conducting a sectoral approach as complement to cover the emission gap on the base of INDC framework. The scenario analysis in this paper take three key sectors, electricity, iron and steel (IST) and cement, into consideration. The results affirmed the earlier judgment that additional sectoral reduction in the electricity sector could significantly reduce global CO 2 emissions. As a result, this study suggests developing consistent sectoral targets for the electricity sector together with the pledged INDC targets. To conduct this sectoral approach, at least 4070.7 million dollars of extra expenditure are required from developed countries to cover the loss of developing countries, but the results of this investment could be as much as 154 million tons’ CO 2 reductions. This paper also concludes with suggestions such as aggressive global mitigation pledges and deeper international cooperation on sectoral technology.

Research on capacity configuration method of concentrated reactive power compensator for wind farm LVRT capability

In order to fulfil the requirement for low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability, the wind farms need to inject the reactive currents during grid fault to support voltage recovery. As the main concentrated reactive power compensator, the static var generators (SVGs) are widely employed in the wind farm for reactive current injection. This study investigates the dynamic reactive currents of the wind turbine based on the field-test data during the grid faults. Then, the scheme that taking wind turbines as main reactive current sources and SVG as compensator is adopted to realise the wind farm LVRT capability. According to this scheme, the capacity configuration method of SVG is developed, which can be used to design SVG capacity to improve the wind farm dynamic reactive current behaviour. Finally, the simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and the availability of the proposed method.
