This paper proposes a novel active stabilization method based on reshaping the output impedance of the source-side PWM rectifier for More Electric Aircraft (MEA) power system. A nonlinear compensation signal is injected into AC voltage command of PWM rectifier to adding a virtual resistor paralleled with DC bus capacitor. Thus, the instability caused by constant power loads (CPLs) can be neutralized. Compared to conventional active damping methods, the value of compensation signal can be expressed by the virtual resistor so that the physical mechanism of stability improvement can be clarified. Besides, all remote sensors providing load input voltages can be removed. Stability and sensitivity of the proposed active stabilization method are analyzed qualitatively. The interaction dynamics of passive devices, such as LC filters of CPLs and DC capacitors on source side are discussed. simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The active participation of demand side resources in power grid operation not only benefits the individual participant but also benefits the whole system. The optimal goal can promote by excavating the active behaviors of demand side. The welfare maximization of market participant is the driving force of such active behaviors. Considering the independence of each user's behavior, the consumer's utility function is selected to depict consumer's preference and demand response behavior. In order to coordinate the consumers' maximum welfare with social welfare maximization, consumers' utility function and units' operation cost are integrated into Unit Commitment (UC) model. The objective function is to maximize social welfare, by subtracting units' operation cost from consumers' total utility, and this objective can be acquired. Considering the proposed model should be solved in a distributed manner, the idea of the centralized coordination and the decentralized decision-making is proposed. Based on the Lagrangian relaxation (LR) principle and distributed real-time pricing scheme, a closed-loop feedback mechanism is constructed to reflect the relationship among generator output, price level, and load demand. The ten generating units example can illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Travelling wave (TW) differential protection fully utilizes the fault information contained in TW at both terminals of a transmission line, so it's a protection with high reliability and high selectivity. However, because TW differential protection needs a large amount of communication, it cannot be put into practical use. This paper proposes a TW differential protection which is based on equivalent travelling wave (ETW). Fault information is not lost during the process of getting ETW, so the proposed protection has the same reliability and selectivity with traditional TW differential protection. Because only several modulus maxima are needed to be sent to the opposite terminal, the traffic is largely reduced and the protection can operate much more rapidly. Extensive simulations validate the proposed protection.

Wireless power transfer has been recognized as a promising technology for electric vehicles charging. However, the parking misalignments between the transmitter coil on the ground and the receiver coil inside the car may cause variations in the mutual inductance for the charging system, which will reduce its transfer power and efficiency. In order to improve the transfer efficiency and optimize the operating condition, it is essential to identify the mutual inductance. In this paper, identification models are studied with and without communication feedback from the receiver coil under two typical cases (resonant transmitter and inductive transmitter). A selection method based on sensitivity analysis is proposed to select models of high accuracy against measurement errors and sampling propagations. simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method. This work is helpful for evaluating and improving the wireless charging system's tolerance against misalignments as well as optimizing its operation condition.

With the development of smart grid, the self-healing ability of protection device becomes much more important. Pilot protection is of good selectivity, but it needs a highly reliable communication network. Once the communication line between two devices is out of work, pilot protection will be forced out of operation. Since there are many ring structures in communication network, circuitous routes can be found to help pilot protection remain operational. In this paper, ant colony algorithm (ACA) are used to find the optimal circuitous route, and simulation results show the method is fast and accurate. To the actual communication network of power system, each node is just connected to a few other nodes, so the search process often come to dead ends. Use penalty functions can reduce the probability of coming to a dead end and improve the algorithm efficiency. The whole route accelerating penalty function is most efficient.

Low carbon transmission expansion planning considering demand side management

The implementation of transmission expansion planning towards low carbon development can effectively alleviate the "carbon lock" effect in the power industry and facilitate the transition to low carbon power system. The demand side management (DSM) is able to reduce the needs of power supply and transmission capacity and further bring down the generation coal consumption and transmission losses. It is therefore an important means of carbon emission reduction in power system. The paper analyzes the impact of DSM and low carbon development on transmission planning at first. By analyzing the performance of typical DSM measures in the constraints, a low carbon transmission expansion planning model is established considering DSM. Nonlinear constraints in the planning model are transformed into linear ones using inequality separation method, turning the planning model into a mixed integer linear programming model. The case study shows the effectiveness of the proposed model with IEEE RTS79 system. The results suggest that considering DSM in the transmission expansion planning can effectively reduce the transmission expansion investment and the total carbon emissions, which can improve overall benefits of the power system. © 2016 Automation of Electric power systems Press.

The series connection of insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) allows the operation at voltage levels higher than the rated voltage of one IGBT. However, the technology has not been widely applied due to transient voltage unbalance. Asynchronous gate drive signals, which cause series-connected IGBTs not to turn-on and turn-off at the same time, result in serious unbalanced voltage sharing. This paper presents an active voltage balancing control for multi series connected HV-IGBTs including the active voltage balancing control (AVBC) circuit integrated in the gate driver and the control for multi series connected IGBTs. The effectiveness of the control has been experimentally validated in a 10 kV dc-link voltage converter using four 4.5 kV HV-IGBTs in series connection.

The application of reduced common mode voltage pulse width modulation methods bring much high order harmonics to the variable speed drive system, which causes considerable iron loss inside the electric motor. In this paper, an improved iron loss model considering those high order harmonics is proposed. Iron loss coefficients are obtained based on experimental data by utilizing multiple linear regression and harmonics analysis method. Comparisons of the iron losses between various PWM methods are made for both experimental results and calculated results. It is found that by utilizing RCMV PWM methods, the iron loss of the induction motor becomes larger. The differential values of iron losses between RCMV PWM and CPWM decrease with the increase of the modulation ratio as a result of the reduction of zero space vectors' action time. © 2015 IEEE.

The measured parameters change with the machine degradation, where the trends of the parameters can be applied in condition prediction. The deterioration of the parameters usually present characteristics in a monotonic or low-frequency way. As the measure signal are merged with instant signals, noise and measurement error in different frequency bands, model decomposition approaches are widely applied to separate the different bands for feature extraction. Among the model decomposition methods, Variational model decomposition is recently proposed by K. Dragomiretskiy and D. Zosso as a non-recursive model which can extract modes concurrently. This work will analyze its effectiveness in degradation feature extraction and application in condition prediction in prognosis. Firstly, variational model decomposition is analyzed, where the characteristics of variational model decomposition are compared with another mode decomposition method ensemble empirical mode decomposition. simulation data is applied to test the effectiveness of the mode decomposition methods. Secondly, field data with component degradation is collected, and the degradation feature extraction is applied with the three methods mentioned above.
