The lack of analytical mechanism of continuous commutation failure (CCF) process hinders the development of CCF early warning algorithm and further obstructs the coordination strategy of relay protection between AC and DC size in hybrid grid. However, summarizing the protection threshold of CCF in the form of electrical quantity analytically under different fault types is a nontrivial pattern recognition problem. To overcome the difficulty of directly analysing the electromagnetic process of CCF, a statistical learning modelling approach is adapted to propose a CCF warning system, in which XGBoost algorithm was used as the backbone to regress on the relationship between AC/DC electrical quantities and the possibility of the occurrence of CCF. The design of the feature vector in XGBoost-based classifier considers not only the analytical expression of key electrical quantity during single commutation failure but also the important state variable of control system. Additionally, a special data windowing method was proposed to enrich of information encoded by the feature vector while ensuring the speed requirement posed by the protection system. Validation on multi-fault scenes simulation shows that the proposed early warning system can trigger warning signal correctly with sufficiently small measured data required, proving the practicability in engineering practice. © 2019 Institution of Engineering and Technology. Dielectric barrier discharge excitated by unipolar pulsed power is a promising approach for producing non-thermal plasma at atmospheric pressure. A magnetic compression solid-state pulse power generator is used to produce dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). The generator is capable of providing repetitive pulses with the voltage of up to 30 kV and duration of 70 ns at a 300 resistive load. This paper illustrates electrical characteristic and luminous emissions of DBD excitated by repetitive unipolar nanosecond-pulses in atmospheric air. Different from common DBD excitated by high-voltage AC sources, discharge current of DBD in the experimental investigation can be on an order of tens of amperes. When the DBD is created using two liquid electrodes, the luminous emissions from the obverse and flank sides of liquid electrodes show that no filament is observed and the discharge is homogeneous and diffuse in the whole discharge regime. © 2010 IEEE.

Shielding failure is one of key problems of UHV transmission lines. Considering the high operating voltage and high tower of UHV transmission lines, the inception criterion of upward leader is proposed in this paper. The process of shielding failure is simulated by the method based on leader progression model and shielding failure rate is calculated. This method is verified by comparing the calculation results with the operated data of UHV transmission lines in Japan. The shielding failure characteristics of UHVDC transmission lines in China under different terrain conditions are researched. © 2012 IEEE.

Due to the economic situation changes and the continuous expansion of new energy power in China, a new evaluation methodology based on multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) should be proposed to promote the comprehensive development of the new regional power grid. Some criteria were selected to constitute an indicator system from the perspectives of the safety reliability, network structure and economic benefit. Then, an integrated evaluation model was proposed based on fuzzy AHP method and VIKOR method was applied to calculate a series of comprehensive evaluation indexes. A regional power grid was chosen as an empirical analysis to demonstrate the feasibility of the evaluation system. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this work, we studied multiple dopants based ZnO varistors and optimizing its microstructure and electrical properties by tailoring the sintering characteristics. The properties were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), current-voltage characteristics, capacitance-voltage characteristics, dielectric characteristics and X-ray diffraction characteristics. At a given gallium and indium concentration, the residual voltage ratio of the sintered varistors under the 5/20μs impulse current decreased obviously as the sintering temperature increased from 1100°C to 1250°C. Besides, the nonlinear coefficient was first increased and then decreased with increasing sintering temperature. The multiple doped ZnO varistors sintered at 1250°C showed optimal performance, exhibiting a grain size of 7.1μm, residual voltage ratio of 1.56, voltage gradient of 416 V/mm, leakage current of 0.79 μA/cm2, and nonlinear coefficient of 73. When applied in power systems, the high voltage gradient varistors will make the line surge arrester in better coordination with insulators as well as reach the goal of low cost and miniaturization of GIS tank-type arresters. © 2019 IEEE.

Forward electricity market has emerged as a pivotal section for the electricity transaction to keep stakeholders away from price risk and electricity shortage. But the forward contract of conventional unit partially limits the unit output before operation, leading to the curtailed generation share of renewable energy source (RES). Modeling and assessing this impact is of great significance for system planning and market supervision. The central thesis of this paper is to find out the impact of forward market on RES curtailment. A probabilistic evaluation model for RES accommodation is proposed, taking the curtailment rate as a main evaluation index. We mainly research financial contract and physical contract, modeling the impact of them on thermal unit minimum load capacity and power load in evaluation model. The simulation is conducted in a simplified system, which reveals the change of RES curtailment with renege penalty, contract price and execution generation curve. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

A chronic drinking water shortage is one of the most important issues in the developing countries, and drinking water from dirty water sources causes serious damage to inhabitants health in some remote areas. The solar distillation remains the most favorable process for the supplying of water to small communities. Base on the traditional solar still, an improved hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) desalination system is presented. The PV modules that are combined with thermal units, constitute the PVT systems which has longer operating time and higher average fresh water production. This paper introduces the DC/DC converter applied in this type of systems, including its structure and control strategy which is suitable for PV array and driving supportive heater. The experimental results for the converter and the whole system are showed and analyzed.

A novel direct power control (DPC) strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) pulse-width-modulation (PWM) rectifier, based on fixed synthesizing vectors, is proposed in this paper. The strategy breaks through the restrictions of vector switching with a simple switching table, improves the excellent dynamic performance of DPC, avoids the neutral-point voltage unbalance and the excessive voltage jumps in phase and line-to-line voltages of the rectifier, and guarantees the proper minimum pulse width and switching intervals between switches in different phases simultaneously. Experimental results verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed scheme.

With the continuous advancement of the construction of new power systems, the data information of the power system is increasing exponentially, and the spatiotemporal distribution of the use of smart terminals and electrical equipment is more scattered. Data collection and analysis of traditional power systems will be a huge challenge. In order to meet the actual needs of multi-scenario, multi-service, and changeable measurement and control objects of intelligent distribution network, this paper firstly studies the design of general terminal open architecture for distribution network multi-measurement and control scenarios, proposes a data service architecture based on open architecture, and establishes a self-description-based open architecture design. The unified information model of the Internet of Things protocol, research and development of intelligent measurement, and the controlling of universal terminals meet multiple communication methods, and realize the deployment verification of intelligent measurement. © 2022 IEEE.

With the development of the power grid and the continuous construction of high-voltage transmission lines, the impact of high-voltage transmission lines in the nearby residential areas is increasingly concerned. Based on the mechanism of induction power generation, according to the relationship between voltage and electric field, this paper proposed an inductive electrical measurement method in the near-ground area under high-voltage transmission line. In this paper, the proposed method is verified by COMSOL simulation software. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper. The induced voltage measurement method in the near-ground area proposed in this paper can be applied to the evaluation of induced electricity and electromagnetic environmental protection. © 2022 IEEE.
