Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) provides an efficient and clean pathway to generate electricity. In addition to hydrogen, SOFCs also hold the possibility for the utilization of a variety of carbon containing fuels. A practical kilowatt-class SOFC system fueled by methane has been preliminarily integrated previously. This study intended to obtain the optimized working conditions for the prereformer, with which the SOFC module can exhibit higher electrical performance. Detailed thermodynamic analysis and experimental measurements of steam methane reforming (SMR) were carried out under different steam to carbon ratios (S/C) and temperatures, where the experimental results matched well with the thermodynamic calculation. Based on the optimized working condition of SMR, the electrical performance and stability of a planar single-layer stack (10×10 cm2) fueled by the reformate syngas was evaluated. The maximum electrical efficiency reached 65.39% (LHV) at 750 C, and 50-hour stable operation under 50% (LHV) electrical efficiency was achieved. © 2021 Electrochemical Society Inc.. The large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) can effectively meet the diversified needs of power grid dispatching. Therefore, the improvement of the BESS operational reliability is of great significance to ensure the operation safety of the grid. However, the BESS is composed of a large number of batteries. This fact suggests the BESS reliability depends not only on the battery operating state but also on the strategy of battery networking reconfiguration. In this paper, the analysis of the operational reliability research of largescale BESS is carried out in-depth. The research status of reliability of large-scale BESS is investigated, and some thoughts on the obstacles to the BESS operational reliability evaluation are given. The promotion of the new technology of BESS and the development of the ubiquitous Internet of Things on BESS operation reliability are analyzed. In addition, the framework of the operational reliability evaluation of a large-scale BESS is proposed. Some key technologies such as failure mechanism, equipment reliability modeling, evaluation, and optimization are summarized, providing some suggestions for the application of large-scale BESS. © 2019 by International Academic Publishers Ltd.

Advanced applications of energy storage system comprise load shifting, isolated island operation, frequency regulation and reactive support, etc. There are already algorithms and control strategies for advanced applications, but still lack an independent supporting software platform. This paper concentrates on the structure and realization of software platform for advanced application of large-scale energy storage system, including demand analysis, software architecture and module design, user interface and functionality development. An easy to operate and expand software platform, with a beautiful graphical user interface and support for visualization of data, was designed and implemented.

In this work, we studied multiple dopants based ZnO varistors and optimizing its microstructure and electrical properties by tailoring the sintering characteristics. The properties were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), current-voltage characteristics, capacitance-voltage characteristics, dielectric characteristics and X-ray diffraction characteristics. At a given gallium and indium concentration, the residual voltage ratio of the sintered varistors under the 5/20μs impulse current decreased obviously as the sintering temperature increased from 1100°C to 1250°C. Besides, the nonlinear coefficient was first increased and then decreased with increasing sintering temperature. The multiple doped ZnO varistors sintered at 1250°C showed optimal performance, exhibiting a grain size of 7.1μm, residual voltage ratio of 1.56, voltage gradient of 416 V/mm, leakage current of 0.79 μA/cm2, and nonlinear coefficient of 73. When applied in power systems, the high voltage gradient varistors will make the line surge arrester in better coordination with insulators as well as reach the goal of low cost and miniaturization of GIS tank-type arresters. © 2019 IEEE.

Travelling wave (TW) differential protection fully utilizes the fault information contained in TW at both terminals of a transmission line, so it's a protection with high reliability and high selectivity. However, because TW differential protection needs a large amount of communication, it cannot be put into practical use. This paper proposes a TW differential protection which is based on equivalent travelling wave (ETW). Fault information is not lost during the process of getting ETW, so the proposed protection has the same reliability and selectivity with traditional TW differential protection. Because only several modulus maxima are needed to be sent to the opposite terminal, the traffic is largely reduced and the protection can operate much more rapidly. Extensive simulations validate the proposed protection.

With the rapid development of distributed energy resources (DERs), it is of vital importance to develop a well-designed transmission cost allocation scheme to reflect the contributions of DERs to the power system. In this paper, a usage-based transmission cost allocation scheme is proposed considering the capability of DERs. Based on the different intentions of transmission capacity, the transmission costs can be classified into four fractions: operating, contingency, planning and invalid transmission costs. On operating conditions, the transmission costs are identified and allocated according to the actual usage of consumers at each node. On contingency conditions, the transmission cost allocation will be influenced by the behaviors of DERs since DERs can provide emergent power support to help alleviate transmission congestion. On planning conditions, the transmission costs are useful in the future. The residual costs, i.e., the invalid transmission costs, should not allocated by consumers because this fraction is caused by the over investment of transmission owners. The case studies based on the IEEE 30-bus system validates the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and model. © 2016, Institution of Engineering and Technology. All rights reserved.

Five-level active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter is a newly emerging topology which can overcome the drawbacks of traditional neutral-point-clamped and flying-capacitor multilevel converters. During the start-up of the converter, it must be ensured that the switches and capacitors cannot be overvoltage and overcurrent due to the uncharged floating capacitors. In this paper, a floating capacitor self-precharge method is proposed which, by transferring the circuit into a booster, charges the floating capacitors to the reference voltage with a very small average load current. simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the validity of this method. © 2012 IEEE.

Conventional steady-state security analysis have to compute the faults belonging to the predefined faults set in turn with out considering the small probability of the occurrence of some faults under certain circumstances. Although its results reflect the violation of the components precisely, they can not figure out how the violation affects the security of the system. The steady-state security analysis based on the operational reliability theory applies the state-depended models of the components in order to find the faults which would happen with high probability. As a result, only these faults should be calculated to decrease the computation time considerably. Further more, the reliability indices indicate the probability of the violation of the component as well as the influence of the violation on the system security, so that the security of the system can be evaluated comprehensively. IEEE RTS-79 test system is adopted in this paper to illustrate the differences between the conventional and the new steady-state security analysis methods. By contrast, it can be concluded that steady-state security analysis based on the operational reliability theory can calculate the influence of the variation of the component failure probability on the system security more specifically, which making the evaluation results more close to the practical operating system Copyright © 2009 by International Academic Publishers Ltd.

According to the characteristics of the cascading failures in power grid, a lot of assessment methods based on the probability theory have been proposed in recent years. However, most of them ignore the influence of the changing operating conditions on the power system planning and operation. This paper assesses the risk of the cascading failure in the power system based on the operational reliability theory which considering the variation of operating states and environment of the power system. The operational reliability of the power system is calculated based on Markov Process which describes the transient probability of states. The key conception of this theory is that the failure rate and the probability of components are changing along with the life of the equipment, the operating states and the environment conditions. A new evaluation procedure is brought up to calculate the operational reliability indices which can provide the specific information of the cascading failure. The evaluating results of the test system confirm that this approach is applicable to analyze the cascading failures in real power system. ©2010 IEEE.

Due to the economic situation changes and the continuous expansion of new energy power in China, a new evaluation methodology based on multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) should be proposed to promote the comprehensive development of the new regional power grid. Some criteria were selected to constitute an indicator system from the perspectives of the safety reliability, network structure and economic benefit. Then, an integrated evaluation model was proposed based on fuzzy AHP method and VIKOR method was applied to calculate a series of comprehensive evaluation indexes. A regional power grid was chosen as an empirical analysis to demonstrate the feasibility of the evaluation system. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
