Investigation on lateral seismic isolation system of a typical long-span single-tower cable-stayed bridge for mountainous areas

This study focuses on a reasonable lateral isolation system for a typical long-span single-tower cable-stayed bridge with a significantly asymmetric span arrangement that is particularly suitable for mountainous areas. Based on the Jinsha River Bridge, the significant structural asymmetry and its effects on structural seismic responses were analyzed. The significantly asymmetric characteristics could result in complex dynamic behavior in seismic conditions and the lateral seismic responses of the structure are governed by multiple modes. A multilinear model composed of an ideal elastoplastic element and a multilinear elastic element was used to simulate different hysteresis, and a parametric analysis was conducted to investigate the appropriate damping hysteresis for the lateral seismic isolation of such a bridge. It shows that the inverted S-shaped hysteresis has relatively smaller secant stiffness and could help to balance the great difference in the lateral stiffness of the tower/piers. Thus, the inverted S-shaped hysteresis could lead to more efficient damping effects and less base shear forces of the tower/piers. A correlation between the reasonable yield forces of the dampers in the lateral isolation system, determined through an influence matrix-based method, and the shear forces of the corresponding bearings in the lateral fixed system was also observed. Moreover, the influence of geological conditions including different terrain and site conditions on the reasonable lateral isolation system was further investigated. It suggests to use dampers at all tower/pier locations when the side span crosses a steep valley slope, while a lateral isolation system without using dampers at the auxiliary piers could be employed when the side span crosses a gentle valley slope. Soft sites require larger damper yield forces and cause greater seismic responses compared to hard sites.

Leakage of water supply pipelines is a common cause of urban road collapse. A database containing 96 pipeline leakage cases in China has been established to study the correlation between pipeline leakage and road collapse. A series of statistical analysis on the distribution pattern and influence factors of road collapse was carried out, and water pipe diameter, pipe buried depth and the surrounding soil category were identified as three key factors affecting the road collapse probability. Then a rapid assessment model for road collapse was established based on the above cases through logistic regression analysis. The model was then applied to zoning the collapse susceptibility of roads in Yangpu District, Shanghai. The results show that the zoning matched well with the spatial distribution of local road collapse cases, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

With the current growing size of cities, it is difficult to realize real-time inspections of fixed municipal facilities by manual inspections. There are various ways to realize automated inspections of municipal facilities, but these methods usually focus only on the state of the municipal facilities themselves, ignoring the negative impacts of peripheral obstacles on safety and availability. Therefore, this paper proposes a monocular camera-based algorithm for inspecting obstacles around municipal facilities. This algorithm estimates the pose of known inspection objects in the image, thereby inverting the spatial information. In addition, to reduce the cost of dataset acquisition, this paper also proposes an algorithm for generating a dataset for position estimation using Blender. The method in this paper can fully utilize the cameras on the existing inspection equipment to achieve the inspection of obstacles around municipal facilities without incurring additional hardware costs. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Centrifuge modelling of dry granular run-out processes under deflective Coriolis condition

Stability analysis of karst anti dip rock slope induced by underground coal mining——A case study of Jiguanling landslide, China

In recent years, the southwestern region of China has experienced a surge in significant mountain collapses, predominantly linked to underground mining operations. This investigation targets the Jiguanling area in Wulong, Chongqing, employing the UDEC numerical simulation technique to meticulously examine the deformation and failure characteristics, rock mass movement patterns, fracture evolution processes, and stress transmission mechanisms of anti-dip rock slopes composed of stratified rocks. These slopes are inherently susceptible to bending and tilting due to their own weight. Our findings elucidate that the predominant failure mode of anti-dip rock karst slopes is the inclined sliding(shear) type, which mirrors the fracture evolution mechanism as they extend in a quadrilateral pattern from the top and bottom plates of the mining area to the critical blocks at the rear and front edges of the slope. The disaster mechanism can be encapsulated as the "initial roof movement phase, direct roof collapse and crack propagation phase, critical block locking and sliding resistance phase, and deterioration phase". The four distinct stages of development and transformation encompass critical block slip(shear) and slope instability phases. An increase in coal seam thickness enlarges the deformation space in the lower part, while the dip angle of the coal seam influences the length and displacement range of rock fracture development. The mining sequence alters the stress failure mode of the underlying critical blocks, and the vertical height of the mining step distance modifies the potential sliding surface and failure mode of the underlying critical blocks. Ultimately, the distance between the goaf and the surface, along with the height of the mining impact, impacts the stability of the reverse slope. The results demonstrate that mining activities are the primary factor inducing the collapse of anti-dip rock slopes, with natural factors playing a secondary role.

Discontinuity recognition is important for the description of rock discontinuities. The accuracy and efficiency of traditional recognition methods based on 3D point clouds are often affected by manual parameter settings during the process. This paper proposes a deep learning intelligent discontinuity recognition method based on a fast, maximum consistent color mapping of the point cloud. The main idea is to quickly assign different colors to different discontinuity planes according to the normal vector while keeping the color within the same discontinuity plane as uniform as possible. Then, the recognition of discontinuities in 3D point clouds is converted to the recognition of discontinuities with different colors in 2D images. Sharp points of discontinuities are also detected to facilitate the recognition. The Mask R-CNN neural network is used to train and recognize discontinuities in 2D images. Finally, the recognized 2D discontinuities are mapped back to the 3D point cloud. The results show the proposed method can achieve intelligent recognition of rock discontinuity with high efficiency and full automation without manual intervention during the process, and the recognition effect is more consistent with manual judgment than traditional methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Self-centering dual rocking core (SDRC) system was developed to improve the seismic relicense of the buildings. However, analysis of the multi-story and high-rise rocking SDRC systems revealed that the higher mode effects led to amplified force demands in the structural members, hence worsening the seismic performance of the structures. To elucidate the working mechanism of the higher mode, analyze the dynamic characteristics of the SDRC systems, and provide design suggestions for the SDRC systems accounting for the higher mode effects, this paper proposed a novel simplified distributed parameter model. Based on the developed simplified model, the modal shape and the characteristic equation of the SDRC system were solved to study the effects of the structural design parameters on the eigenvalues, modal shapes, and internal force distribution of the rocking cores.
