MIPPR 2005: SAR and Multispectral image processing

Efficient VLSI architectures for multi-dimensional (m-D) discrete wavelet transform (DWT), e.g. m=2, 3, are presented, in which the lifting scheme of DWT is used to reduce efficiently hardware complexity. The parallelism of 2 m subbands transforms in lifting-based m-D DWT is explored, which increases efficiently the throughput rate of separable m-D DWT. The proposed architecture is composed of m2m-1 1-D DWT modules working in parallel and pipelined, which is designed to process 2m input samples per clock cycle, and generate 2m subbands coefficients synchronously. The total time of computing one level of decomposition for a 2-D image (3-D image sequence) of size N2 (MN2) is approximately N2/4 (MN2/8) intra- clock cycles (ccs). An efficient line-based architecture framework for both 2D+t and t+2D 3-D DWT is first proposed. Compared with the similar works reported in previous literature, the proposed architecture has good performance in terms of production of computation time and hardware cost. The proposed architecture is simple, regular, scalable and well suited for VLSI implementation.

DNA has been used to construct a variety of nanoscale thermometers due to its unique thermodynamic properties. It has proven to be one of the most promising, yet challenging aspects of DNA-based thermometers, to obtain significant signal changes when the temperature changes slightly. Here, we propose a strategy to construct nanoscale thermometers with sensitive temperature responses based on DNA triplex. The thermometers consist of a CT-rich DNA strand and stabilizing strands, whose conformations vary with temperature. By adjusting the sequence design or introducing mismatch bases in stabilizing strands, the temperature response interval of the thermometer can be reduced to 7 ∘C, which lead to higher sensitivity compared to the interval of 12–15 ∘C for conventional designs. The temperature responses of the thermometer are characterized by fluorescence experiments. The fluorescence kinetics experiments demonstrate the good repeatability. The design of the nanothermometer will be helpful for constructing advanced nanosystem with sensitive temperature responses as well as long service times. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Memristor crossbar array is considered as a promising circuit module for accelerating neural networks. Because the memristor is tunable and multi-state, it is important to design applicable Read-Write (RW) circuit for driving memristor crossbar array. In this paper, a novel RW circuit based on analog circuits is proposed for tuning memristors in high-dimensional array parallelly, which is scalable and low-overhead. The standalone RW circuit schematic is presented for reading/writing single memristor and verified in circuit simulation. Then, we extend and apply this circuit into a two-dimensional memristor crossbar array. The performance of memristor crossbar array controlled by designed RW circuits is verified via the simulations under various machine learning datasets. The comparison with related works is presented, which demonstrates the advantages of the proposed RW circuit regarding overhead and anti-error. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper presents a foot pressure measuring system connected with EEG It can quantify the relationship between human gait cycle and EEG signals. Understanding the relationship will help in the prevention of potential motor dysfunction disease and the development of rehabilitation tools. The whole system is composed of three parts: EEG signal acquisition, foot landing signal acquisition and the synchronization of these two signals. EEG signal can be acquired by Neuroscan EEG system. The plantar pressure measuring system (PPMS) is designed in details. With PVDF piezoelectric film sensor insole, PPMS could measure the plantar pressure precisely, and send a TTL signal as a mark to EEG system synchronously with EEG signal when the foot contacts the ground at beginning of each gait cycle. The experiment results shows that EEG signals are in line with human gait cycle on dynamic response. From that, some potential diseases can be predict, such as dyskinesia, peripheral neuropathy, neurological disorder, musculoskeletal disease and so on. It can also be used to monitor improvements in rehabilitation.

Object recognition using polar Zernike moments for micromanipulation

Multi micro parts recognition is one of the important tasks for the assembly of multi micro objects in micromanipulation. Zernike moments have been widely used as invariant features in many image analysis and pattern recognition problems because of their superiority compared to other moments. However, they suffer from high computation cost and inherent error. This study proposes a polar coordinate based algorithm for the computation of Zernike moments, which improves the invariance properties dramatically. Due to the symmetry property of the Zernike basis functions, Zernike moments can be obtained by computing only one octant of the Zernike basis functions, which means that the number of pixels involved in the computation of Zernike moments is only 12.5% of previous method. This leads to significant reduction in the computational complexity requirements. A comparison with other conventional method is performed in detail. To achieve multi micro parts recognition with higher performance, we present a support vector machine algorithm, which employs polar Zernike moments based on edge extraction to obtain feature attribute to identify and classify the targets. The obtained results show the superiority of the proposed method. © 2011 by Binary Information Press.

DNA origami is one of the powerful techniques that utilize DNA as building blocks to synthesize nanostructures. Traditionally, through introducing different numbers of insertions and deletions of base pairs in DNA helices, the in-plane bending angle of curved DNA structures could be roughly tuned. Here, we explored a strategy that used the position patterns of nicks in staple strands to tune the geometric conformation of curved DNA origami structures, including in-plane bending, out-of-plane bending, and twisting angles. When the structure adopted different patterns of nicks positions, great difference appeared in the geometric properties. Further, by combining subunits of different nicks position patterns, the bending and twisting of the combined structure was effectively tuned. The strategy increases the design accuracy of curved DNA origami structures and expands the toolbox for designing DNA structures. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

An unprecedented challenge of the new generation launch vehicle control is its four parallel strap-on engines are oscillateable by the servomechanism. It increases the manoeuvrability of the vehicle and the control complexity simultaneously. The chapter investigates actuator failure compensation for new generation launch vehicle control. A control reconfiguration scheme of fault-tolerant control is developed to enhance the reliability of launch vehicle attitude control systems and prevent the control invalidation caused by the deadlock of the oscillating actuator, based on the congruity of the composite moment before and after the failure happens. This reconfiguration scheme is capable of utilizing the remaining control authority to achieve the desired performance in the presence of deadlock at certain detectable angle occurring in one or several actuators at unknown time instants. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

This paper is presented to examine and improve the performance of the torque ripple suppression for direct torque controlled permanent magnet synchronous motor by using fuzzy control method. On the basis of analyzing the torque ripple of the direct torque control in details, the fuzzy controllers are designed for two parts. Since the errors of the torque and flux could not assess accurately in hysteresis structure, the hysteresis controllers of the conventional DTC method are replaced by the fuzzy controller which could select the optimal voltage vector by judging the deviation degree of the torque and flux errors according to the fuzzy logic inference. Then the action time of the selected optimal voltage vector is determined by using the fuzzy duty ratio control method, the ripples of torque and flux can be attenuated effectively. The comprehensive simulation experiment is exhibited to reveal the excellent response performance of the system and verify the feasibility of the proposed fuzzy control scheme. Rehabilitation of the grasp function of hands is critical for improving the quality of living for those who suffer from lost or weakened hand abilities due to neuromuscular disease. Current finger rehabilitation devices usually need a complex mechanical structure or a larger actuation system, which reduce the portability of the devices for daily living rehabilitation. In this work, we introduced the developing an ultra-light integrated modular finger exoskeleton that driven by a crank-rocker mechanism. The actuator for each joint is directly assembled at each joint by simplifying the structure design, which makes the device portable for patients. All of the parts are manufactured by 3D printing thus to reduce the initial moment of the whole device, the actuator we used is also the ultra-light server motor. The weight of the whole device is just about 60g (including 3 actuators). We analysised the kinematic of the exoskeleton, then a real-Time embedded position tracking control algorithm is implemented on an Arduino board, which is used as the controller. Experimental results show that our device is capable of both positive and active training for finger habilitation. © 2018 IEEE.

The residue number system (RNS) has computational advantages in addition and multiplication compared with weighted number systems, such as the binary number system (BNS), since operations on residue digits are performed independently and these processes can be performed in parallel. Thus they are widely used in digital signal processing etc. Since residue to binary conversion is critical and difficult for the practicality of RNS, in this paper, a novel residue to binary (R/B) conversion algorithm for the restricted moduli set (2/sup n/ -1, 2/sup n/, 2n+1), based on exploring the periodicity of modulo (2/sup n/ /spl plusmn/ 1) operations is presented. A new 2n-bit adder based R/B converter is also proposed. The performance comparison results demonstrate that the new converter is faster and requires less area compared with the others reported in the previous literature.
