Homotopy-based image reconstruction in breast ultrasound tomography

To diagnose breast cancer, an alternative approach to X-ray mammography and B-mode ultrasound is the Breast Ultrasound Computed Tomography (UCT). Concerning breast cancer detection, mammographic techniques have been considered as gold standard modality but these methods suffer through high rate of false-positive results and radiations. In addition, the use of low resolution images in the conventional ultrasound techniques is another problem that makes it difficult to differentiate between breast tissues and tumor existence. In this particular study, we have used a full wave-based tomographic technique to diagnose the breast cancer. While taking into account the physical characteristics, full wave-based approach constructs non-linear operator that transforms it as a nonlinear inverse problem or a minimization problem. To solve the non-linear inverse problem, we have used Homotopoy Continuation Methods (HCM), which is globally convergent method and provides multiple solutions. In the subsequent steps, to reduce the computational complexity and the high usage of memory for finding out the Jacobian of the cost function, we have applied discrete adjoint method. In the last, the effect of the noise to the reconstructed image has been tested. In this preliminary analysis with the use of adjoint methods, obtained results have shown the robustness and visibility of our proposed approach. © 2013 by Binary Information Press.

Remote sensing identification of shrub encroachment in grassland in Inner Mongolia

Shrub encroachment has been a wide phenomenon across the arid and semi-arid grasslands in Inner Mongolia, China. Although numerous studies have investigated the effect of this phenomenon on community composition, ecosystem structure, and nutrient cycling, reports on the distribution patterns of shrub encroachment are limited. A recent development in satellite remote sensing enables accurate assessment of shrub distribution and its dynamics at large scales. In this paper, the combined ground survey in Xianghuangqi, four satellite images (with spatial resolution of 5.8 m) of ZY-3, covering nearly the whole area and taken between July and August in 2013, were used to identify the shrub distribution in this region. It should be noted that the shrub here indicated the shrub-grass mosaic due to the mixed pixel effect, and the identification was weak when the coverage of shrub was on low levels. The NDVI threshold method was first used to extract the vegetation coverage area, and then three traditional pixel-oriented methods (Support vector machine, Maximum likelihood and Mahalanobis distance), compared with the object-oriented method, were used for the classification of images. Object-oriented method is different from the traditional one, in that the classification is not based on the spectral characteristics of individual pixel, but relies on the image object with spatial texture and shape and size characteristics. Ground survey data were used to compare the accuracy level of these methods. It indicated that the shrub recognition accuracy by using support vector machine algorithm is the highest among the three pixel-oriented methods, with higher producer accuracy and user accuracy than the other two algorithms. Furthermore, the overall classification accuracy of this algorithm is 81.15% higher than that of the maximum likelihood (73.33%) and the Mahalanobis distance (61.77%). This paper addresses the bipartite flock control problem with or without a virtual leader. Using structurally balanced signed graph theory and LaSalle’s invariance principle, we prove that the algorithm guarantees a bipartite flocking behavior. In such a collective motion, the whole group separates into two clusters, in each of which all individuals move with the same direction. Meanwhile, every pair of agents in different clusters moves with opposite directions. Moreover, all agents in the two separated clusters approach a common velocity magnitude, and collision avoidance among each cluster is ensured as well. Finally, the proposed bipartite flock control method are examined by numerical simulations. The bipartite flocking motion addressed by this paper has its references in both natural collective motions and human group behaviors such as predator-prey and panic escaping scenarios.

The impact of stock-dependent demand on supply chain dynamics

This paper presents an investigation on the dynamics of a supply chain system under stock-dependent demand. Considering the feature of piecewise linearity, a switched linear model composed of three subsystems is developed. Based on the switched model, some analytical stability results are derived. Simulation experiments are designed to verify the stability results and observe nonlinear dynamics. We show that stock-dependent demand not only leads to different stability results but also makes nonlinear dynamics more complicated. We also reveal that the nonlinear dynamics of the switched model, such as chaotic and periodic fluctuations of inventory and order, are essentially caused by switching frequently among subsystems due to uncertainties of inventory status. The results obtained in this paper help us understand the dynamic complexities of supply chain system and provide guidelines for selecting decision parameters to improve overall performance.

Most existing flocking algorithms assume one single virtual leader and rely on information on both relative positions and relative velocities among neighboring *** this paper,the problem of controlling a flock of mobile autonomous agents to follow multiple virtual leaders is investigated by using only position information in the sense that agents with the same virtual leader asymptotically attain the same velocity and track the corresponding virtual leader based on only position measurements.A flocking algorithm is proposed under which every agent asymptotically attains its desired velocity,collision between agents can be avoided,and the final tight formation minimizes all agents' global potentials.A simulation example is presented to verify and illustrate the theoretical results.

This paper generalizes the concept of the depth-independent interaction matrix, developed for point and line features in our early work, to generalized image features. We derive the conditions under which the depth-independent interaction matrix can be linearly parameterized by the geometric parameters of the generalized image features, and propose an adaptive visual servo controller for robot manipulators using the generalized image features whose geometric parameters are unknown. To estimate the unknown parameters on-line, we propose new error functions that are linear to estimation errors of the parameters and an algorithm that minimizes the error functions using multiple images. The Lyapunov theory is used to prove asymptotic stability of the proposed controller based on the nonlinear dynamics of the manipulator. It is also shown that in addition to points and lines, other common image features like distances, angles, areas, and centroids all satisfy the conditions for the linear parameterization. Experiments have been conducted to validate the proposed control method. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The prediction of landslide displacement is essential for carrying out to improve the disaster warning system and reduce casualties and property losses. This study applies a novel neural network technique, extreme learning machine (ELM) with kernel function, to landslide displacement prediction problem. However, the generalization performance of ELM with kernel function depends closely on the kernel types and the kernel parameters. In this paper, we use a convex combination of Gaussian kernel function and polynomial kernel function in ELM, which may use these two types of kernel functions' advantages. In order to avoid blindness and inaccuracy in parameter selection, a novel hybrid optimization algorithm based on the combination of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is used to optimize the regularization parameter C, the Gaussian kernel parameter γ, the polynomial kernel parameter q and the mixing weight coefficient η. The performance of our model is verified through two case studies in Baishuihe landslide and Yuhuangge landslide.

A route planning method based on gradient-field quantum genetic algorithm model was presented in this paper. It introduces the gradient field of a grid map to quantum genetic algorithm model and uses quantum genetic algorithm (QGA) to optimize the cost function of route planning. By combining the quantum characteristics with the capabilities of the large diversity of the population, as well as fast convergence rate and high global searching, the optimization of route was guided and realized in our method by using the genetic operators with the essential characteristics of quantum and the gradient information of a grid map. Experimental results demonstrated that our method further effectively improves the quick convergence and capability of searching the optimal route. © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

This paper proposes a new affine registration algorithm for 2D point matching. It is a two-step iterative registration algorithm by soft weight assignment based on bidirectional distance. At each iteration, the affine transformation is updated by two optimization steps, in which the model data and the test data are matched from each other respectively. By the optimization of registration at separate steps during each iteration, the proposed algorithm can provide a good estimate of the accurate affine transformation in condition of poor initialization and lack of geometric assumptions on point sets. Some experiments about comparison with the current state-of-the art approaches, demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of our method.
