Evaluation of laboratory and environmental exposure systems for protein modification upon gas pollutants and environmental factors

Chemical modifications of proteins induced by ambient ozone(O_(3))and nitrogen oxides(NOx)are of public health concerns due to their potential to trigger respiratory *** laboratory and environmental exposure systems have been widely used to investigate their relevant mechanism in the *** bovine serum albumin(BSA)as a model protein,we evaluated the two systems and aimed to reduce the uncertainties of both the reactants and products in the corresponding kinetic *** the laboratory simulation system,the generated gaseous pollutants showed negligible *** layers of BSA were coated on the flow tube with protein extraction recovery of 87.4%.For environmental exposure experiment,quartz fiber filter was selected as the upper filter with low gaseous O_(3)(8.0%)and NO_(2)(1.7%)losses,and cellulose acetate filter was appropriate for the lower filter with protein extraction efficiency of 95.2%.The protein degradation process was observed without the exposure to atmospheric oxidants and contributed to the loss of protein monomer mass fractions,while environmental factors(e.g.,molecular oxygen and ultraviolet)may cause greater protein monomer *** on the evaluation,the study exemplarily applied the two systems to protein modification and both showed that O_(3) promotes the protein oligomerization and nitration,while increased temperature can accelerate the oligomerization and increased relative humidity can inhibit the nitration in the environmental exposure *** developed laboratory and environmental systems are suitable for studying protein modifications formed under different atmospheric conditions.A combination of the two will further reveal the actual mechanism of protein modifications.

Luoyang is a typical heavy industrial city in China,with a coal-dominated energy structure and serious air *** the implementation of the clean air actions,the physic-ochemical characteristics and sources of PM_(2.5) have changed.A comprehensive study of PM_(2.5) was conducted from October 16,2019 to January 23,2020 to evaluate the effectiveness of previous control measures and further to provide theory basis for more effective policies in the *** showed that the aerosol pollution in Luoyang in autumn and win-ter is still serious with the average concentration of 91.1 μg/m^(3),although a large reduction(46.9%)since *** the contribution of nitrate increased from 12.5%to 25.1%and sul-fate decreased from 16.7%to 11.2%,aerosol pollution has changed from sulfate-dominate to *** NO_(3)^(-)/SO_(4)^(2-)ratio and the increasing of NO_(3)^(-)/SO_(4)^(2-)ratio with the aggravation of pollution indicating vehicle exhaust playing an increasingly important role in PM_(2.5) pollution in Luoyang,especially in the haze *** inorganic ions contributed significantly to the enhancement of PM_(2.5) during the pollution *** high value of Cl^(-)/Na^(+)and EC concentration indicate coal combustion in Luoyang is still *** top three contributor sources were secondary inorganic aerosols(33.3%),coal combus-tion(13.6%),and industrial emissions(13.4%).Close-range transport from the western and northeastern directions were more important factors in air pollution in Luoyang during the sampling *** is necessary to strengthen the control of coal combustion and reduce vehicle emissions in future policies.

Interactions between methyl octabromo ether flame retardant and expanded polystyrene microplastics in the photoaging process

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) plastic is widely used because of its low density and lightweight properties, enabling it to float on water and increase its exposure to sunlight. In this study, we simulated the photoaging process of flame retardant-added EPS (FR-EPS) and common original EPS (OR-EPS) microplastic (MP) particles with and without methyl octabromoether flame retardant (MOBE) in the laboratory to explore the effect of MOBE on the photodegradation of EPS. Results showed that MOBE accelerated size reduction and surface hole formation on the particles, hastening the shedding and replacement of particle surfaces. FR-EPS particles exhibited a weight loss exceeding that of OR-EPS, reaching 40.85 ± 3.72% after 36 days of irradiation. Moreover, rapid physical peeling of the FR-EPS surface was accompanied by continuous chemical oxidation and fluctuations of the carbonyl index and O/C ratio. A diffusion model based on Fick's second law fitted well for the concentration of MOBE remaining in FR-EPS particles. MOBE's sensitivity to direct photochemical reactions inhibited the early-stage photoaging of EPS MP particles by competing for photons. However, MOBE as chromophores could absorb photons and produce •OH to promote the aging of EPS. Moreover, the capacity of EPS to absorb light energy also accelerated MOBE degradation. These findings suggested that the photoaging behavior of commercial EPS products containing flame retardants in the environment is quite different from that of pure EPS, indicating that additive-plastic interactions significantly alter MP fate and environmental risks. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Autonomous underwater unmanned platforms have become important facilities in the marine field since countries attach importance to maritime rights and interests, and play an important role in both military and civilian use. However, complex underwater marine environmental elements will have a huge impact on the performance of underwater unmanned platforms, and how to ensure the safe and stable operation of underwater unmanned platforms has become an urgent problem to be solved. Based on this practical problem, this paper studies the influence of marine environmental elements on the operation of underwater unmanned platforms with reference to the hydrological data of the South China Sea, and uses Bayesian methods to carry out risk zoning of the impact of the marine environment in the South China Sea on underwater unmanned platforms. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Zn-CO_(2)batteries(ZCBs)are promising for CO_(2)conversion and electric energy ***,the ZCBs couple the electrochemical CO_(2)reduction(ECO_(2)R)with the oxygen evolution reaction and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction,which normally causes ultrahigh charge voltage and CO_(2)conversion efficiency attenuation,thereby resulting in~90%total power ***,isolated FeN_(3)sites encapsulated in hierarchical porous carbon nanoboxes(Fe-HPCN,derived from the thermal activation process of ferrocene and polydopamine-coated cubic ZIF-8)were proposed for hydrazine-assisted rechargeable ZCBs based on ECO_(2)R(discharging process:CO_(2)+2H+→CO+H_(2)O)and hydrazine oxidation reaction(HzOR,charging process:N_(2)H_(4)+4OH−→N_(2)+4H_(2)O+4e^(−)).The isolated FeN_(3)endows the HzOR with a lower overpotential and boosts the ECO_(2)R with a 96%CO Faraday efficiency(FECO).Benefitting from the bifunctional ECO_(2)R and HzOR catalytic activities,the homemade hydrazine-assisted rechargeable ZCBs assembled with the Fe-HPCN air cathode exhibited an ultralow charge voltage(decreasing by~1.84 V),excellent CO selectivity(FECO close to 100%),and high 89%energy *** situ infrared spectroscopy confirmed that Fe-HPCN can generate rate-determining*N_(2)and*CO intermediates during HzOR and ECO_(2)*** paper proposes FeN_(3)centers for bifunctional ECO_(2)R/HzOR performance and further presents the pioneering achievements of ECO_(2)R and HzOR for hydrazine-assisted rechargeable ZCBs.

Distribution, Sources, And Potential Health Risks of Fluoride, Total Iodine, and Nitrate In Rural Drinking Water Sources of North and East China

Small-scale water sources serving villages and towns are the main source of drinking water in rural areas. Compared to centralized water sources, rural water sources are less frequently monitored for water quality and have poor follow-up treatment facilities, making them vulnerable to drinking health risks. To reveal the hydrochemistry characteristics, contaminants sources, and health risks in rural water sources, 189 water samples were collected from lakes and reservoirs, rivers, and groundwater in North and East China for major ions, nutrient salts, microelements, and stable isotope analysis. Statistical analysis and isotopic tracing were performed, as well as an assessment of the risk to human health. The exceeding threshold rates for fluoride (F-) and nitrate (NO3-) in surface water were 1.8% and 9.1% respectively. For groundwater, the exceeding threshold rates were 20.9% for F-, 15.7% for total iodine (TI), and 4.5% for NO3-. F- and TI were mainly derived from the leaching of fluoride- and iodine-containing minerals by cationic exchange, and NO3- is mainly derived from nitrogen in the soil (31.7-43.9%), the use of ammonia fertilizers, and the discharge of manure and sewage. Nitrogen in the soil can be an important source of nitrate in the aquatic environment, and soils with higher clay content have a greater retention effect on the migration of nitrogen pollutants from the surface to the groundwater. F- in water sources contributes most to human health risks for drinking, followed by NO3- and TI, and a higher proportion of groundwater sources has health risks for drinking than that surface water sources. The authorities should give high priority to optimizing the choice of water sources and technology for water treatment, and rational measures should be taken to protect water sources from the threats of anthropogenic pollution. © 2023, The Authors. The Influence of Wet-to-Dry Season Shifts on the Microbial Community Stability and Nitrogen Cycle in the Poyang Lake Sediment

In lake environments, seasonal changes or extreme droughts can cause exposure of the lake sediment, leading to soil formation. Although previous studies have explored how environmental changes influence microbial functioning in the water-level-fluctuating zone, few studies have investigated how wholescale habitat changes affect microbial composition, community stability and ecological functions in lake environments. To address this, our study therefore investigated the effects of sediment-to-soil conversion on microbial composition, community stability and subsequent ecological functioning in Poyang Lake, China. Our results revealed that, during sediment-to-soil conversion, the number of total and unique operational taxonomic units (OTUs) decreased by 40% and 55%, respectively. Moreover, sediment-to-soil conversion decreased the microbial network’s connection and robustness but significantly increased its stability, through increased negative cohesion and modularity. In sediment and soil, the abundance of dominant bacteria, and bacterial diversity strongly affected microbial community stability, although this was not true in water. Furthermore, the specific microbial phyla and genes involved in the nitrogen cycle changed significantly after sediment-to-soil conversion, with the major nitrogen-cycling processes changing from denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) to nitrification and assimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (ANRA). Moreover, we observed a compensation mechanism in the functional genes related to the nitrogen cycle, such that all the nitrogen cycle’s processes were maintained after sediment-to-soil conversion. The oxidation-reduction potential strongly affected network complexity, microbial stability, and nitrogen cycling in the sediment and soil. These results are important for understanding the responses of microorganisms to climate change and extreme drought. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Springs Emerging along the Elevation Gradient Indicate Intensive Groundwater-Surface Water Exchange in an Alpine Headwater Catchment, Northwestern China

Groundwater plays an important role in sustaining the streamflow in cold alpine area, but is poorly understood due to a lack of direct access. About 98 groups of springs are observed at the upper reaches of Heihe River Basin, which provide an opportunity to explore the main aquifers. Springs are clustered in three groups according to locations:(1) springs on the moraine and talus deposits;(2) springs at the end of alluvial plain in lower topography;(3) springs along the river bank. The hydrometric, geochemical and isotopic data of springs in a representative catchment were integrated and used to elucidate the groundwater flow paths. Results indicate the Quaternary porous aquifers in the alpine catchment have a profound influence on the regional groundwater flow paths and the groundwater and surface water(GW-SW) interactions. The aquifer consisting of alluvial-pluvial deposits has a great capacity of groundwater storage and plays a vital role in regulating discharge by attenuating the seasonal variation and maintaining the main stream in cold seasons. This is different from the fast recharge and discharge mode of the moraine and talus deposits. Our work highlights the importance of loose deposits in controlling the GW-SW interactions in the cold alpine area.

The co-occurrence of bacteria and microeukaryote species is a ubiquitous ecological phenomenon,but there is limited cross-domain research in aquatic *** conducted a network statistical analysis and visualization of microbial cross-domain co-occurrence patterns based on DNA sampling of a typical subtropical bay during four seasons,using high-throughput sequencing of both 18S rRNA and 16S rRNA ***,we found obvious relationships between network stability and network complexity *** example,increased cooperation and modularity were found to weaken the stability of cross-domain ***,we found that bacterial operational taxonomic units(OTUs)were the most important contributors to network complexity and stability as they occupied more nodes,constituted more keystone OTUs,built more connections,more importantly,ignoring bacteria led to greater variation in network ***,Alphaproteobacteria,Bacteroidetes,and Actinobacteria were the most ecologically important ***,we found that the environmental drivers most associated with cross-domain networks varied across seasons(in detail,the network in January was primarily constrained by temperature and salinity,the network in April was primarily constrained by depth and temperature,the network in July was mainly affected by depth,temperature,and salinity,depth was the most important factor affecting the network in October)and that environmental influence was stronger on bacteria than on microeukaryotes.

Thallium spill shifts the structural and functional characteristics of viral communities with different lifestyles in river sediments

Thallium (Tl), a highly toxic heavy metal, can affect microbial community, while little is known about its effect on viral community. The present study investigated the variation of viral communities, as well as their interactions with microbial hosts under Tl stress. Tl in sediments significantly altered the composition and diversity of the viral communities, but showed no significant links with the prokaryotic communities, which may reveal a potential discrepancy in the sensitivity of the viral and prokaryotic communities to heavy metal stress. Auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) involved in denitrification, methane oxidation and organic sulfur transformation were enriched at T1-contaminated sites, while the abundance of AMGs related to methanogenesis and sulfate reduction were higher at pristine sites. Specially, the enrichment of AMGs involved in assimilatory sulfate reduction in Tl-contaminated sites could possibly reduce Tl bioavailability by enhancing the microbially-driven sulfur cycling to generate sulfides that could be complexed with Tl. Moreover, there was a significantly positive correlation between virus-carrying metal resistant genes and the sedimentary Tl concentration, implying that Tl contamination might enhance the metal resistant potential of the viruses. Serving as the functional gene reservoir, the response of viral AMGs to Tl stress could represent a potential pathway for microorganisms to be adapted to the metal-polluted environments. Our study provided novel insights into the impact of Tl spill on viral communities, shedding light on functional characteristics and the links of virus-host interaction with Tl level. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
