Developing computer vision–based rice phenotyping techniques is crucial for precision field management and accelerating breeding, thereby continuously advancing rice production. Among phenotyping tasks, distinguishing image components is a key prerequisite for characterizing plant growth and development at the organ scale, enabling deeper insights into eco-physiological processes. However, due to the fine structure of rice organs and complex illumination within the canopy, this task remains highly challenging, underscoring the need for a high-quality training dataset. Such datasets are scarce, both due to a lack of large, representative collections of rice field images and the time-intensive nature of annotation. To address this gap, we established the first comprehensive multi-class rice semantic segmentation dataset, RiceSEG. We gathered nearly 50,000 high-resolution, ground-based images from five major rice-growing countries (China, Japan, India, the Philippines, and Tanzania), encompassing over 6,000 genotypes across all growth stages. From these original images, 3,078 representative samples were selected and annotated with six classes (background, green vegetation, senescent vegetation, panicle, weeds, and duckweed) to form the RiceSEG dataset. Notably, the sub-dataset from China spans all major genotypes and rice-growing environments from the northeast to the south. Both state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks and transformer-based semantic segmentation models were used as baselines. While these models perform reasonably well in segmenting background and green vegetation, they face difficulties during the reproductive stage, when canopy structures are more complex and multiple classes are involved. These findings highlight the importance of our dataset for developing specialized segmentation models for rice and other crops. The RiceSEG dataset is publicly available at ***. © 2025, CC BY.

Shuffled frog leaping (SFL) is a population based, cooperative search metaphor inspired by natural memetics. Its ability of adapting to dynamic environment makes SFL become one of the most important memetic algorithms. In order to improve the algorithmpsilas stability and the ability to search the global optimum, a novel dasiacognition componentpsila is introduced to enhance the effectiveness of the SFL, namely frog not only adjust its position according to the best individual within the memeplex or the global best of population but also according to thinking of the frog itself. To validate the improved SFL (ISFL) method, numerous simulations were conducted to compare SFL and ISFL using six benchmark problems for continuous and discrete optimization. According to the simulation results, adding the cognitive behavior to SFL significantly enhances the performance of SFL in solving the optimization problems, and the improvements are more evident with the scale of the problem increasing.

Scaling properties of scale-free networks in degree-thresholding renormalization flows

We study the statistical properties of observables of scale-free networks in the degree-thresholding renormalization (DTR) flows. For BA scale-free networks with different sizes, we find that their structural and dynamical observables have similar scaling behavior in the DTR flow. The finite-size scaling analysis confirms this view and reveals a scaling function with a single scaling exponent that collectively captures the changes of these observables. Furthermore, for the scale-free network with a single initial size, we use its DTR snapshots as the original networks in the DTR flows, then perform a similar finite-size scaling analysis. Interestingly, the initial network and its snapshots share the same scaling exponent as the BA synthetic network. Our findings have important guiding significance for analyzing the structure and dynamic behavior of large-scale networks. Such as, in large-scale simulation scenarios with high time complexity, the DTR snapshot could serve as a substitute or guide for the initial network and then quickly explore the scaling behavior of initial networks. © 2021, CC BY.

This paper investigates adaptive flocking of multi-agent systems (MASs) with a virtual leader. All agents and the virtual leader share the same intrinsic nonlinear dynamics, which satisfies a locally Lipschitz condition and depends on both position and velocity information of the agent itself. Under the assumption that the initial network is connected, an approach to preserving the connectivity of the network is proposed. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, an adaptive flocking control law is derived to make the MASs track the virtual leader without collision. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Mobile walking assistive robots have been widely used for monitoring patients’ gait patterns and providing support to prevent falls. Traditional approaches often separate the operational modes of these robots into human-following and supporting modes, which can lead to discontinuities in assistance and potentially compromise safety. This paper proposes a novel assist-as-needed control strategy that incorporates a Balance Index (BI) to dynamically adjust the robot’s support based on the user’s balance capability. The BI is calculated using the interaction force between the user and the robot along the z-axis and the gait symmetry index (GSI). The proposed variable admittance controller modifies its parameters based on the BI, ensuring seamless transitions between compliance and support modes. Experimental validation was conducted with a healthy subject walking both with and without a knee fixation brace. The results demonstrate that the robot provides minimal interference during natural gait and increased support during impaired gait, validating the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in enhancing user safety and promoting natural walking patterns.

This paper investigates second-order consensus of networked systems with heterogeneous intrinsic nonlinear dynamics via a geometrical method, in which the nonlinear dynamics are governed by both velocity and position. First, two necessary conditions are deduced for the existence of consensus solutions by analyzing the inherent nonlinear dynamics of isolated nodes. Then a closed invariant set is constructed via geometrical methods. The nonempty of the set implies the existence of consensus solution. Assuming that the primary and the second dimension about the above invariant set are the same linear subspace, the system can be divided into two simple subsystems through a linear transformation. In addition, some sufficient conditions are proposed for reaching the global consensus based on matrix theory and Lyapunov method. Finally, numerical simulation results are provided to illustrate the validity of theoretical analysis. IEEE

An efficient and accurate method for landslide displacement prediction is very important to reduce the casualties and property losses caused by this type of natural hazard. In recent years, many kinds of artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been widely applied to landslide displacement prediction. But we can't know which type of ANN is the best until we have calculated the prediction error. An improper choice of ANN may result in bad prediction results. In this paper, we use a neural networks combination prediction method based on the discounted MSFE (mean squared forecast error) to reduce the risk of selecting the types of ANNs. Four popular ANNs, radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), support vector regression (SVR), least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) and extreme learning machine (ELM), are selected as candidate neural networks. The performance of our model is verified through two case studies in Baishuihe landslide and Bazimen landslide. Experimental results reveal that the combining neural networks can improve the generalization abilities of ANNs.

Memristor is a nonlinear resistor with the character of memory and is proved to be suitable for simulating synapse of neuron. This paper introduces two memristors in series with the same polarity (back-to-back) as simulator for neuron's synapse and presents the model of recurrent neural networks with such back-to-back memristors. By analysis techniques and fixed point theory, some sufficient conditions are obtained for recurrent neural network having single attractor flow and multiple attractors flow. At last, simulation with numeric examples is presented to illustrate our results.

Time-lapse is a technology used to record the development of embryos during in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Accurate classification of embryo early development stages can provide embryologists valuable information for assessing the embryo quality, and hence is critical to the success of IVF. This paper proposes a multi-task deep learning with dynamic programming (MTDL-DP) approach for this purpose. It first uses MTDL to pre-classify each frame in the time-lapse video to an embryo development stage, and then DP to optimize the stage sequence so that the stage number is monotonically non-decreasing, which usually holds in practice. Different MTDL frameworks, e.g., oneto-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many, are investigated. It is shown that the one-to-many MTDL framework achieved the best compromise between performance and computational cost. To our knowledge, this is the first study that applies MTDL to embryo early development stage classification from time-lapse videos. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.
