Effective usage of credit records promotes cooperation on weighted networks

The cooperative behaviors of players on weighted networks are investigated by incorporation of trust mechanisms into a well-accepted game model, i.e., the networked prisoner’s dilemma game, afterwards some weight-updating schemes are designed according to the credit records. Despite the differences in network topologies and strategy updating protocols, a simple yet significant principle surfaces that, to promote the emergence of cooperation over abundant weighted networks, only the latest credit record of partners is required to be taken into consideration, whereas incorporating more previous records may even deteriorate the cooperation performance. To support such an appealing principle, we have investigated more deeply into the role of credit records so as to give a detailed explanation underlying it. The virtue of this work lies in providing insights into the effective usage of the currently available credit records.

Recently, experiments have demonstrated that simple binary arithmetic and logical operations can be computed by the process of self- assembly of DNA tiles. In this paper, we show how the tile assembly process can be used for subtraction and division. In order to achieve this aim, four systems, including the comparator system, the duplicator system, the subtraction system, and the division system, are pro- posed to compute the difference and quotient of two input numbers using the tile assembly model. This work indicates that these systems can be carried out in polynomial time with optimal O(1) distinct tile types in parallel and at very low cost. Furthermore, we provide a scheme to factor the product of two prime numbers, and it is a breakthrough in basic biological operations using a molecular computer by self-assembly.

This paper presents a new approach for norm bounded continuous-time uncertain switch systems such as BTT vehicle. Firstly, the flight trajectory has been divided into several intervals according to flight attitude. Meanwhile, the nominal model could be obtained. Secondly, based on the linear matrix inequality (LMI), combining the guaranteed cost control theory, the state feedback guaranteed cost control law is proposed. Then, to reduce the external disadvantage influence on vehicle, the RBF-NN is used to compensate the intensive aerodynamic disturbance. Finally, taking BTT vehicle as the research objective, the final results of the simulation are proved with effectiveness for the proposed design approach. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Intensive task-oriented repetitive physical therapies need be provided by individualized interaction between the patients and the rehabilitation specialists to improve hand motor performance for those survived from stoke and traumatic brain injury. The goal of this research is to develop a novel wearable device for robotic assisted hand repetitive therapy. We designed a pneumatic muscle (PM) driven therapeutic device that is wearable and provides assistive forces required for grasping and finger extension. The robot has two distinct degrees of freedom at the thumb and all other fingers. The embedded sensors can feedback position and force information for robot control and quantitative evaluation of task performance. It is potential of providing supplemental at-home therapy in addition to in the clinic treatment. To realize the trajectory tracking control, a fuzzy PID controller is designed for the proposed device. The experimental results show angle tracking control of the robotic hand using the fuzzy PID controller has better performance than that using a conventional PID controller. ©2009 IEEE.

This is a survey of two approaches to intelligent control. The approaches are based on the author’s previous and ongoing projects in the Maximum Clique Problem (MCP) and the Crowd Dynamics. The ideas came from computational intelligence and fluid dynamics. One is Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm and TABU search’s applications in the combinatorial search of intelligent control. Another one is from Continuum Dynamics and this approach can achieve a kind of group intelligence. This article is originally produced as a proposal and then a survey, thus is incomplete and lacking of simulation data. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

A constructive approach to minimal realization problem of 2D systems

Unlike in the 1D case, it is not always possible to find a minimal state-space realization for a 2D system except for some particular categories. The purpose of this paper is to explore a constructive approach to the minimal Roesser model realization problem for a class of 2D systems which does not belong to the clarified categories. As one of the main results, a constructive realization procedure is first proposed. Based on the proposed procedure, sufficient conditions and explicit construction for minimal realizations of the considered 2D systems are shown. In addition, possible variations and applications of the obtained results are discussed and illustrative examples are presented.

The optimal control problem for switched linear systems with internally forced switching has more constraints than with externally forced switching. Heavy computations and slow convergence in solving this problem is a major obstacle. In this paper we describe a new approach for solving this problem, which is called Migrant Particle Swarm Optimization (Migrant PSO). Imitating the behavior of a flock of migrant birds, the Migrant PSO applies naturally to both continuous and discrete spaces, in which definitive optimization algorithm and stochastic search method are combined. The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is illustrated via a numerical example. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used in the field of neural engineering. EEG signals can describe the brain activities while the subjects with para/tetraplegia perform movement with their limbs. This paper reviews the research on the design of experiment, the different frequency bands of EEG signals and the data processing methods of EEG. According to the analysis of the previous studies, it has been concluded that EEG signal of alpha and beta frequency bands is of special significance for analyzing the brain activity of subjects with SCI during movements. And EEG signals also can be used for BCI with application in rehabilitation engineering. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper developed two learning procedure, respectively, based on the orthogonal least squares (OLS) method and the "Innovation- Contribution" criterion (ICc) proposed newly. The orthogonal use of the stepwise-regression algorithm of the ICc mages the model structure independent of the selected term sequence and reduces the cluster region further as compared with orthogonal least squares (OLS). as the Bayesian information criteria (BIC) method is incorporate into the clustering process of the ICc, except for the widths of Gaussian functions, it has no other parameter that need tuning ,but the user is required to specify the tolerance ρ, which is relevant to noises and will be difficult to implement in the real system, for the OLS algorithm. The two algorithms are employed to the Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNN) to compare its performance for different noise nonlinear dynamic systems. Experimental results show that they provide an efficient approximation to the required results for fitting models, but the clustering procedures of the ICc is substantially better solutions than does the OLS. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

A fast algorithm was proposed to decrease the computational cost of the contour extraction approach based on quantum mechanics. The contour extraction approach based on quantum mechanics is a novel method proposed recently by us, which will be presented on the same conference by another paper of us titled "a statistical approach to contour extraction based on quantum mechanics". In our approach, contour extraction was modeled as the locus of a moving particle described by quantum mechanics, which is obtained by the most probable locus of the particle simulated in a large number of iterations. In quantum mechanics, the probability that a particle appears at a point is equivalent to the square amplitude of the wave function. Furthermore, the expression of the wave function can be derived from digital images, making the probability of the locus of a particle available. We employed the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to estimate the square amplitude of the wave function. Finally, our fast quantum mechanics based contour extraction algorithm (referred as our fast algorithm hereafter) was evaluated by a number of different images including synthetic and medical images. It was demonstrated that our fast algorithm can achieve significant improvements in accuracy and robustness compared with the well-known state-of-the-art contour extraction techniques and dramatic reduction of time complexity compared to the statistical approach to contour extraction based on quantum mechanics. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.
