Object Detection in 20 Years: A Survey

Object detection, as of one the most fundamental and challenging problems in computer vision, has received great attention in recent years. Over the past two decades, we have seen a rapid technological evolution of object detection and its profound impact on the entire computer vision field. If we consider today's object detection technique as a revolution driven by deep learning, then back in the 1990s, we would see the ingenious thinking and long-term perspective design of early computer vision. This paper extensively reviews this fast-moving research field in the light of technical evolution, spanning over a quarter-century's time (from the 1990s to 2022). A number of topics have been covered in this paper, including the milestone detectors in history, detection datasets, metrics, fundamental building blocks of the detection system, speed-up techniques, and the recent state-of-the-art detection methods. Most contemporary supervised Remote Sensing (RS) image Change Detection (CD) approaches are customized for equal-resolution bitemporal images. Real-world applications raise the need for cross-resolution change detection, aka, CD based on bitemporal images with different spatial resolutions. Given training samples of a fixed bitemporal resolution difference (ratio) between the high-resolution (HR) image and the low-resolution (LR) one, current cross-resolution methods may fit a certain ratio but lack adaptation to other resolution differences. Toward continuous cross-resolution CD, we propose scale-invariant learning to enforce the model consistently predicting HR results given synthesized samples of varying resolution differences. Concretely, we synthesize blurred versions of the HR image by random downsampled reconstructions to reduce the gap between HR and LR images. We introduce coordinate-based representations to decode per-pixel predictions by feeding the coordinate query and corresponding multi-level embedding features into an MLP that implicitly learns the shape of land cover changes, therefore benefiting recognizing blurred objects in the LR image. Moreover, considering that spatial resolution mainly affects the local textures, we apply local-window self-attention to align bitemporal features during the early stages of the encoder. Extensive experiments on two synthesized and one real-world different-resolution CD datasets verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Our method significantly outperforms several vanilla CD methods and two cross-resolution CD methods on the three datasets both in in-distribution and out-of-distribution settings. The empirical results suggest that our method could yield relatively consistent HR change predictions regardless of varying bitemporal resolution ratios. Monitoring changes in the Earth’s surface is crucial for understanding natural processes and human impacts, necessitating precise and comprehensive interpretation methodologies. Remote sensing satellite imagery offers a unique perspective for monitoring these changes, leading to the emergence of remote sensing image change interpretation (RSICI) as a significant research focus. Current RSICI technology encompasses change detection and change captioning, each with its limitations in providing comprehensive interpretation. To address this, we propose an interactive Change-Agent, which can follow user instructions to achieve comprehensive change interpretation and insightful analysis, such as change detection and change captioning, change object counting, change cause analysis, etc. The Change-Agent integrates a multi-level change interpretation (MCI) model as the eyes and a large language model (LLM) as the brain. The MCI model contains two branches of pixel-level change detection and semantic-level change captioning, in which the BI-temporal Iterative Interaction (BI3) layer is proposed to enhance the model’s discriminative feature representation capabilities. To support the training of the MCI model, we build the LEVIR-MCI dataset with a large number of change masks and captions of changes. Experiments demonstrate the SOTA performance of the MCI model in achieving both change detection and change description simultaneously, and highlight the promising application value of our Change-Agent in facilitating comprehensive interpretation of surface changes, which opens up a new avenue for intelligent remote sensing applications. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper addresses the global consensus problem for multi-input multi-output saturated systems within a sampled-data framework, aiming to advance global consensus, manage heterogeneous actuator saturation across components, and preserve distributed characteristics by using sampled-data feedback. We propose a distributed control algorithm that incorporates a redesigned saturation function, represented as decentralized dynamic saturation levels. These levels for each agent’s dimensions are autonomously updated through an adaptive strategy, which mitigates heterogeneous saturation by carefully selecting constant and time-varying saturation parameters in it. Lyapunov analysis proves that global consensus can be achieved under the proposed control law, provided the sampling periods of all agents remain below a calculated threshold. An example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

The electric vehicle (EV) and electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) have been widely deployed with the development of large-scale transportation electrifications. However, since charging behaviors of EVs show large uncertainties, the forecasting of EVCS charging power is non-trivial. This paper tackles this issue by proposing a reinforcement learning assisted deep learning framework for the probabilistic EVCS charging power forecasting to capture its uncertainties. Since the EVCS charging power data are not standard time-series data like electricity load, they are first converted to the time-series format. On this basis, one of the most popular deep learning models, the long short-term memory (LSTM) is used and trained to obtain the point forecast of EVCS charging power. To further capture the forecast uncertainty, a Markov decision process (MDP) is employed to model the change of LSTM cell states, which is solved by our proposed adaptive exploration proximal policy optimization (AePPO) algorithm based on reinforcement learning. Finally, experiments are carried out on the real EVCSs charging data from Caltech, and Jet Propulsion laboratory, USA, respectively. Underwater images are often influenced by color casts, low contrast, and blurred details. We observe that images taken in natural settings typically have similar histograms across color channels, while underwater images do not. To improve the natural appearance of an underwater image, it is critical to improve the histogram similarity across its color channels. To address this problem, we develop a histogram similarity-oriented color compensation method that corrects color casts by improving the histogram similarity across color channels in the underwater image. In addition, we apply the multiple attribute adjustment method, including max-min intensity stretching, luminance map-guided weighting, and high-frequency edge mask fusion, to enhance contrast, saturation, and sharpness, effectively addressing problems of low contrast and blurred details and eventually enhancing the overall appearance of underwater images. Particularly, the method proposed in this work is not based on deep learning, but it effectively enhances a single underwater image. Comprehensive empirical assessments demonstrated that this method exceeds state-of-the-art underwater image enhancement techniques. In this paper, we revisit the interval observer design problem of harmonic oscillator system with unknown but bounded external disturbance and measurement noise. With the bounding information of the external disturbance and measurement noise, a high-gain interval observer is firstly defined and constructed for the harmonic oscillator system to realize the interval estimation on the state and the robust control of the system. Then, a switched high-gain interval observer is proposed to reduce the influence of the measurement noise for a tighter interval width on the state estimation. Finally, some numerical simulations are given to verify the theoretical results.

A novel evolutionary route planner for aircraft is proposed in this paper. In the new planner, individual candidates are evaluated with respect to the workspace, thus the computation of the configuration space is not required. By using problem-specific chromosome structure and genetic operators, the routes are generated in real time,with different mission constraints such as minimum route leg length and flying altitude, maximum turning angle, maximum climbing/diving angle and route distance constraint taken into account.
