Solar evaporation for simultaneous oil-water separation and electricity generation with Janus wood-based absorbers

Oily wastewater from ocean oil spills endangers marine ecosystems and human health. Therefore, developing an effective and sustainable solution for separating oil-water mixtures is urgent. Interfacial solar photothermal evaporation is a promising approach for the complete separation of two-phase mixtures using only solar energy. Herein, we report a carbonized wood-based absorber with Janus structure of comprising a hydrophobic top-layer and an oleophobic bottom-layer for simultaneous solar-driven oil-water separation and electricity generation. Under sunlight irradiation, the rapid evaporation of seawater will induce a separation of oil-water mixtures, and cause a high salt concentration region underlying the interface, while the bottom “bulk water” maintains in a low salt concentration, thus forming a salinity gradient. Electricity can be generated by salinity gradient power. Therefore, oil-water separation efficiency of > 99% and derived extra electricity power of ~0.1 W/m2 is achieved under solar radiation, demonstrating the feasibility of oil-water separation and electricity production synchronously directly using solar energy. This work provides a green and cost-effective path for the separation of oil-water mixtures.

Energy dissipation mechanism and ballistic characteristic optimization in foam sandwich panels against spherical projectile impact

This study systematically examines the energy dissipation mechanisms and ballistic characteristics of foam sandwich panels(FSP)under high-velocity impact using the explicit non-linear finite element *** on the geometric topology of the FSP system,three FSP configurations with the same areal density are derived,namely multi-layer,gradient core and asymmetric face sheet,and three key structural parameters are identified:core thickness(t_(c)),face sheet thickness(t_(f))and overlap face/core number(n_(o)).The ballistic performance of the FSP system is comprehensively evaluated in terms of the ballistic limit velocity(BLV),deformation modes,energy dissipation mechanism,and specific penetration energy(SPE).The results show that the FSP system exhibits a significant configuration dependence,whose ballistic performance ranking is:asymmetric face sheet>gradient core>*** mass distribution of the top and bottom face sheets plays a critical role in the ballistic resistance of the FSP *** BLV and SPE increase with tf,while the raising tcor noleads to an increase in BLV but a decrease in ***,a face-core synchronous enhancement mechanism is discovered by the energy dissipation analysis,based on which the ballistic optimization procedure is also conducted and a design chart is *** study shed light on the anti-penetration mechanism of the FSP system and might provide a theoretical basis for its engineering application.

Given the intricate temporal correlations inherent in most process industry systems, temporal dynamic modeling methods based on time series data have demonstrated superior performance in the area of industrial data-driven modeling. However, due to constraints in data acquisition and maintenance methods, obtaining a substantial volume of high-quality and intact time series data from process industries is often challenging. To address this challenge, AI-Generated Content technologies (AIGC) can be employed to produce high-quality virtual data and ensure data sufficiency. This paper proposes a novel Time Diffusion Model (TDM) for the generation of industrial time series data. TDM introduces diffusion models to better capture the temporal correlations and data distributions of industrial time series data, enabling the generation of high-quality virtual time series data. This capability extends its applicability to time series data imputation and time series data augmentation tasks. The proposed TDM model is applied to the practical primary reformer process case. The experimental results substantiate that TDM can generate industrial time series data of high quality and effectively enhance the performance of industrial data-driven tasks. © 2024 IEEE.

Dust pollution during shotcrete process in high-altitude tunnel based on numerical simulation

The surrounding rock needs shotcrete support after drilling and blasting excavation in the tunnel;the high concentration of dust generated in the process will endanger workers'occupational ***,to ensure the cleanness and safety of the tunnel construction process,a full-scale model of the tunnel was established based on field data of a high-altitude tunnel of the Sichuan-Tibet *** dust production mechanism is summarized by combing the whole process of *** Computa-tional Fluid Dynamics(CFD)method was used to study the diffusion and transport of dust under different *** grey relational analysis was applied to investigate the correlation values of the influ-encing factors on dust diffusion in the shotcrete operation *** results show that the dust gener-ation mechanism of shotcrete includes the sudden change of particle velocity in the jet area leading to escape and particle impact dust generation,where fine dust is easily dispersed in the *** continuous dust production,the dust concentration is higher near the wet spraying machine and on the backflow side of the working *** the air supply volume and shortening the distance between the air duct and the working face is conducive to diluting the dust concentration in the *** the high-altitude environment,the dust concentration in the tunnel decreases,the diffusion distance be-comes smaller,the settlement proportion of dust particles increases,and the risk of secondary pollution *** simulation results and the field measurement data are consistent,which can provide theoretical support for the construction site dust control.

Strain effects have garnered significant attention in catalytic applications due to their ability to modulate the electronic structure and surface adsorption properties of *** this study,we propose a novel approach called“similar stacking”for stress modulation,achieved through the loading of Co_(2)P on Ni_(2)P(Ni_(2)P/Co_(2)P).Theoretical simulations reveal that the compressive strain induced by Co_(2)P influences orbital overlap and electron transfer with hydrogen ***,the number of stacked layers can be adjusted by varying the precursor soaking time,which further modulates the strain range and hydrogen *** a 2-h soaking condition,the strain effect proves favorable for efficient hydrogen *** characterizations using X-ray diffraction,high-angel annular dark-field scanning transmission election microscope(HAADF-STEM),and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy successfully demonstrate lattice contraction of Co_(2)P and bond length shortening of ***,our catalyst shows an ultrahigh current density of 1 A cm^(-2) at an overpotential of only 388 mV,surpassing that of commercial Pt/C,while maintaining long-term *** material design strategy of similar stacking opens up new avenues of strain modulation and the deeper development of electrocatalysts.

Addressing Information Asymmetry: Deep Temporal Causality Discovery for Mixed Time Series

While existing causal discovery methods mostly focus on continuous time series, causal discovery for mixed time series encompassing both continuous variables (CVs) and discrete variables (DVs) is a fundamental yet underexplored problem. Together with nonlinearity and high dimensionality, mixed time series pose significant challenges for causal discovery. This study addresses the aforementioned challenges based on the following recognitions: 1) DVs may originate from latent continuous variables (LCVs) and undergo discretization processes due to measurement limitations, storage requirements, and other reasons. 2) LCVs contain fine-grained information and interact with CVs. By leveraging these interactions, the intrinsic continuity of DVs can be recovered. Thereupon, we propose a generic deep mixed time series temporal causal discovery framework. Our key idea is to adaptively recover LCVs from DVs with the guidance of CVs and perform causal discovery in a unified continuous-valued space. Technically, a new contextual adaptive Gaussian kernel embedding technique is developed for latent continuity recovery by adaptively aggregating temporal contextual information of DVs. Accordingly, two interdependent model training stages are devised for learning the latent continuity recovery with self-supervision and causal structure learning with sparsity-induced optimization. Experimentally, extensive empirical evaluations and in-depth investigations validate the superior performance of our framework.

Robotic fish actuated by smart materials has attracted extensive attention and has been widely used in many *** this study,a robotic fish actuated by dielectric elastomer(DE)films is *** tensile behaviours of DE film VHB4905 are studied,and the Ogden constitutive equation is employed to describe the stress‐strain behaviour of the DE *** fabrication processes of the robotic fish,including prestretching treatment of the DE films,electrode coating with carbon paste,and waterproof treatment,are illustrated in *** dynamic response of the fabricated DE actuators under different excitation voltages is tested based on the experimental *** results show that the first‐order natural frequencies of the obtained DE actuator in air is 4.05 ***,the swimming performances of the proposed robotic fish at different driving levels are demonstrated,and it achieves an average swimming speed of 20.38 mm/s,with a driving voltage of 5kV at 0.8 Hz.

Modulating the Coordination Environment of Cu Sites for Highly Selective CO2 Electroreduction to Ethylene

Carbon dioxide (CO2) can be reduced to a variety of value-added products by the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (ERC). Modulating the coordination environment of the Cu sites can effectively optimize the selectivity and activity of the reduction process. In this work, we report a facile strategy to regulate the coordination environment of Cu sites for improving the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of ethylene. Room-temperature Ar plasma with different powers and treating times was employed to partially remove the 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic moieties from the structure of Cu-MOF-74, thus resulting in more unsaturated coordinated Cu sites and lower oxidation state. The structure distortion and electron configuration change of Cu-MOF-74-P was observed from electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Meanwhile, the proportion of Cu+ in Cu-MOF-74-P has increased significantly. By combination of XAFS and in situ DRIFTS, it was shown that the coordination number of Cu-MOF-74-P has decreased from 2.7 to 1.6, thus facilitating the formation of more *CO intermediates on the surface during the reduction process. This modification strategy successfully increased the Faradaic efficiency of C2H4 in the product up to 48%, which was 3.2 times of its original performance. This work provides some guidance for the design of catalysts with tailored selectivity during CO2 electroreduction. © 2024 The Authors.
