Cleats are the main channels for fluid transport in coal ***,the microscale flow characteristics of both gas and water phases in primary cleats have not been fully studied as ***,the local morphological features of the cleat were determined using image processing technology and a transparent cleat structure model was constructed by microfluidic lithography using the multiphase fluid visualization test ***,the effect of microchannel tortuosity characteristics on two‐phase flow was analyzed in this *** results are as follows:(1)The local width of the original cleat structure of coal was strongly *** cleats showed contraction and expansion in the horizontal direction and undulating characteristics in the vertical direction.(2)The transient flow velocity fluctuated due to the structural characteristics of the primary *** water‐driven gas interface showed concave and convex instability during flow,whereas the gas‐driven water interface presented a relatively stable concave surface.(3)The meniscus advanced in a symmetrical pattern in the flat channel,and the flow stagnated due to the influence of undulation points in a partially curved *** flow would continue only when the meniscus surface bypassed the stagnation point and reached a new equilibrium position.(4)Enhanced shearing at the gas-liquid interface increased the gas‐injection pressure,which in turn increased residual liquids in wall grooves and liquid films on the wall surface.

Non-intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) represents a cost-efficient technological advancement in meticulously monitoring electricity consumption patterns. However, external noise interference in practical load identification poses challenges for accurate monitoring. To address this, a multi-task learning framework is proposed, concurrently tackling load identification and signal de-noising. To extract effective information from load signals, a novel feature representation called variational mode decomposition-instantaneous amplitude (VMD-IA) was introduced. To ensure optimal performance across the different tasks, a multi-gate mixture of expert architecture (MMOE) module is integrated into the proposed model. The proposed approach was evaluated on a self-collected load dataset, as well as public NILM datasets. The experimental results indicate that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art methods in all tasks. © 2024 IEEE.

Multi-Domain Graph Meta Learning Network for Few-Shot Prediction in industrial Processes

In process industries, the scarcity of data highlights the necessity of few-shot learning for accurate industrial predictions. Recently, model agnostic meta learning (MAML) has become an effective solution to this challenge. However, the existing MAML in industrial prediction still faces two key issues: i) training tasks originate from multiple domains, and ii) the inter-variable coupling relationships are not fully exploited to their potential in cases with limited information. Therefore, we propose a multi-domain graph meta learning network (MDGML) to enable knowledge transfer and enhance information utilization through domain generalization and graph-based meta learning. First, an empirical domain adaptation module is developed to map each source domain to a shared domain, ensuring consistent distributions across learning tasks. Next, robust hyperbolic graphs are devised to learn the spatial coupling relationships among process variables and offer additional insights through a graph-based perspective. Then, domain-specific prototypes are computed and designed to modulate the prediction results, thereby enhancing domain-dependent prediction accuracy. Furthermore, we also propose task-adaptive optimization for MAML inner loops under the regulation of the node information density in graphs. It can accommodate differences between learning tasks. Finally, the experimental results from four real-world blast furnace datasets validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Domain adaptation (DA) can be used for fault detection under multiple operating conditions. However, the lack of interpretability of DA models prevents potential users from understanding the decisions made by models. To give a solution, a neural additive domain adaptation network (NADAN) is proposed, which is constructed based on a neural additive model (NAM). Benefiting from the structural advantages of NAM, the predictions of NADAN are interpretable. Specifically, NADAN is able to explain how each feature affects the decision of the model. In addition, NADAN consists of two modules, feature learning (FL) and domain adaptation (DA), and achieves domain alignment through the combination of FL and DA. The FL module is pretrained to learn high-order features. The DA module takes learned features as input and achieves domain alignment based on multi-kernel maximum mean discrepancy (MK-MMD). Compared to the raw data, the learned features are more task-relevant, which helps to improve the performance of NADAN on DA. Furthermore, NADAN augments the feature dimensions during DA to measure the inter-domain differences in detail, which in turn achieves better domain alignment. Experiments on datasets generated from wastewater treatment simulation model demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed NADAN. © 2024 IEEE.

Metagenomics reveals the microbial community and functional metabolism variation in the partial nitritation-anammox process:From collapse to recovery

Mainstream partial nitritation-anammox(PNA)process easily suffers from performance instability and even reactor collapse in ***,it is of great significance to unveil the characteristic of performance recovery,understand the intrinsic mechanism and then propose operational *** this study,we combined long-term reactor operation,batch tests,and metagenomics to reveal the succession of microbial community and functional metabolism variation from system collapse to *** aeration control(0.10-0.25mg O_(2)/L)was critical for performance *** was also found that Candidatus Brocadia became the dominant flora and its abundance increased from 3.5%to 11.0%.Significant enhancements in carbon metabolism and phospholipid biosynthesis were observed during system recovery,and the genes abundance related to signal transduction was dramatically *** up-regulation of sdh and suc genes showed the processes of succinate dehydrogenation and succinyl-CoA synthesis might stimulate the production of amino acids and the synthesis of proteins,thereby possibly improving the activity and abundance of AnAOB,which was conducive to the performance ***,the increase in abundance of hzs and hdh genes suggested the enhancement of the anammox *** in the abundance of key genes involved in nitrogen metabolism indicated that nitrogen removal pathway was more diverse after system *** achievement of performance recovery was driven by anammox,nitrification and denitrification coupled with dissimilatory nitrate reduction to *** results provide deeper insights into the recovery mechanism of PNA system and also provide a potential regulation strategy for the stable operation of the mainstream PNA process.

Influence analysis of complex crack geometric parameters on mechanical properties of soft rock

Soft rocks, such as coal, are afected by sedimentary efects, and the surrounding rock mass of underground coal mines is generally soft and rich in joints and cracks. A clear and deep understanding of the relationship between crack geometric parameters and rock mechanics properties in cracked rock is greatly important to the design of engineering rock mass struc‑tures. In this study, computed tomography (CT) scanning was used to extract the internal crack network of coal specimens. Based on the crack size and dominant crack number, the parameters of crack area, volume, length, width, and angle were statistically analyzed by diferent sampling thresholds. In addition, the Pearson correlation coefcients between the crack parameters and uniaxial compression rock mechanics properties (uniaxial compressive strength UCS, elasticity modulus E) were calculated to quantitatively analyze the impact of each parameter. Furthermore, a method based on Pearson coefcients was used to grade the correlation between crack geometric parameters and rock mechanical properties to determine threshold values. The results indicated that the UCS and E of the specimens changed with the varied internal crack structures of the specimens, the crack parameters of area, volume, length and width all showed negative correlations with UCS and E, and the dominant crack played an important role both in weakening strength and stifness. The crack parameters of the angle are all positively correlated with the UCS and E. More crack statistics can signifcantly improve the correlation between the parameters of the crack angle and the rock mechanics properties, and the statistics of the geometric parameters of at least 16 cracks or the area larger than 5 mm2 are suggested for the analysis of complex cracked rock masses or physical reproduction using 3D printing. Dynamic, uncertainty and nonlinearity are three very important characteristics of complex industrial process data. In this paper, a method of fault detection and classification based on stacked autoencoder-linear dynamic system (SAE-LDS) model is proposed. This method aims to simultaneously consider multiple characteristics of industrial process data for fault detection and classification. Firstly, the deep learning algorithm SAE is used to mine the nonlinear characteristic of process data. On this basis, the SAE model is embedded into the LDS model. The LDS model is used to further extract the dynamics and uncertainty, so as to establish a SAE-LDS model that can comprehensively consider multiple characteristics of data. Finally, the SAE-LDS model is applied to the TE process, compared with the traditional method for fault detection and fault classification. The experimental results show that SAE- LDS model has good effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

The methods for improving the biodegradability of oily sludge: a critical review

Biological degradation method, as an environmentally friendly, low-carbon, and clean pollution treatment technology, is widely used for the harmless disposal of oily sludge. The biodegradability of oily sludge with stable emulsification system, high oil, and water content is poor. Therefore, it is necessary to pre-treat the oily sludge to improve its biodegradability, including recover the petroleum resources and remove heavy metals and bio-toxic organic matters. This review systematically summarizes five oily sludge treatment methods and their influences on sludge biodegradability, including pyrolysis, chemical hot washing, solvent extraction, chemical oxidation, and hydrothermal. Pyrolysis at temperatures above 750 °C produces high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, chemical hot washing and chemical oxidation would cause secondary pollution, solvent extraction method could not be applied due to the high cost and high toxicity of the extractant, and the oil removal of hydrothermal method is inefficient. Additionally, the principles, advantages, and disadvantages of those treatments and the factors affecting microbial degradation were analyzed, which provide the development direction of pretreatment technology to improve the biodegradability of oily sludge. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Measurements studies have shown that the absorption of radiation by black carbon(BC)increases as the particles ***,there are significant discrepancies between the measured and modeled absorption enhancement(E_(abs)),largely due to the simplifications used in modeling the mixing states and shape *** took advantage of chamber experiments on BC aging and developed an efficient method to resolve the particle shape based on the relationship between the coating fraction(ΔD_(ve)/D_(ve),0)and fractal dimension(D_(f)),which can also reflect the variations of D_(f)during the whole BC aging *** with externally and partly mixed states(0≤ΔD_(ve)/D_(ve),0≤0.5)can be considered to be uniformly distributed with the D_(f)values of 1.8–2.1,whereas the Df values are constrained in the range 2.2–2.8 for fully mixed states(ΔD_(ve)/D_(ve),0>0.5).The morphological parameters(i.e.,the effective density and the dynamic shape factor)were compared with the measured values to verify the simulated *** simulated mean deviations of morphological parameters were smaller than 8%for the method resolving the particle *** applying a realistic shape and refractive index,the mass absorption cross for fully mixed states can be improved by 11%compared with a simplified core–shell *** on our understanding of the influence of D_(f)andΔD_(ve)/D_(ve),0 on E_(abs),we propose a two-stage calibration equation to correct the E_(abs)values estimated by the core–shell model,which reduces the simulation error in the Mie calculation by 6%–14%.
