This study dealt with an experimental/numerical investigation to manage the thermo-hydraulic performance of a heat sink with square pin-fins at various twist angles and operating conditions. An experimental test platform, which utilized low-pressure air as cooling medium, was established. Steady-state liquid crystal thermography was employed to determine the Nusselt number of the heated surface. Through numerical simulations and experiments at Re = 11400-19000, it was observed that the overall performance of rectangular channels with square pin-fins was significantly better than that of flat rectangular channels. As the Reynolds number increases, the thermal resistance of the rectangular channel with square pin-fins decreased. In addition, the Nusselt number increased with an increase of the twist angle. For large twist angles (θ = 90° and θ = 180°), the friction factor reached a minimum value at Re = 15200, while the performance factor attained a maximum value at Re = 15200. For high Reynolds number (Re = 19000) and large twist angle (θ = 180°), the cooling channel with square pin-fins demonstrated optimal heat transfer and heat dissipation effects. Furthermore, twist fins at α = 0° and α = 45° exhibited distinct local heat transfer performances within the cooling channel. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids enhance dry matter intake in transition cows by regulating taste transduction gene expression in the liver associated with rumen microbial alteration

This study explored the effect of supplementing the diet with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on liver gene expression and its contribution to the recovery of cows during the transition phase. A total of 30 multiparous non-lactating Holstein dairy cows (35 d before expected calving) were randomly fed a diet with either 1% dry matter (DM) of hydrogenated fatty acid (FA) (C16:00 enriched; control group [CON]) or 3.5% DM of extruding flaxseed (n-3 enriched; HN3 group). The cows underwent a 7-d adaptation period, followed by a 28-d prepartum period and a 28-d postpartum period. In the beginning of the experiment, parity, body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS) and milk yield were 2.6 ± 1.2, 757.5 ± 65.8 kg, 3.3 ± 0.2 and 10,286.5 ± 1,464.8 kg/previous lactation (mean ± SD), respectively. The relative abundances of Bacteroidota ( P = 0.047) and Spirochaetota ( P = 0.091) were higher and that of Patescibacteria ( P = 0.076) was lower in the HN3 group than in the CON group 4 d before prepartum. The dry matter intake (DMI) of cows was positively correlated with the abundance of bacteria in the rumen (Spirochaetota: r = 0.871, P < 0.001; Bacteroidota: r = 0.896, P < 0.001) and the differential expression of genes involved in taste transduction ( ACSL1 : r = 0.673, P < 0.001; PLIN4 : r = 0.632, P < 0.01; CPT1A : r = 0.694, P < 0.001, The full names of gene present in Table S1). These results suggest that dietary n-3 PUFA at an appropriate concentration can promote DMI recovery by upregulating the expression of these genes and maintaining the balance of the rumen microbiota.

For stroke patients, sudden muscle force disturbances may occur in the upper limb rehabilitation exercise. Combining the neural networks ability to approximate arbitrary functions, using the advantages of adaptive control in solving system uncertainties, and applying the theory of Lyapunov stability to prove the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system, a compensation based on RBF neural network the adaptive control algorithm of the upper limb rehabilitation robot was proposed in this paper to compensates for the defects caused by sudden muscle force interference.

The restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) has been successfully applied to solve the many-electron Schrödinger equation. In this work we propose a single-layer fully connected neural network adapted from RBM and apply it to study ab initio quantum chemistry problems. Our contribution is two-fold: 1) our neural network only uses real numbers to represent the real electronic wave function, while we obtain comparable precision to RBM for various prototypical molecules;2) we show that the knowledge of the Hartree-Fock reference state can be used to systematically accelerate the convergence of the variational Monte Carlo algorithm as well as to increase the precision of the final energy. © 2023, CC BY.

Due to the high altitude and low oxygen levels, individuals residing or traveling in high-altitude regions often experience hypoxic cardiac dysfunction, which significantly affects their overall well-being and quality of life. Our previous investigations showed that peptide from yak milk residue exhibits notable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties that may have a good regulatory effect on hypoxic cardiac dysfunction. In this study, our results suggest that oral administration of yak milk peptide T3 improves the cardiac dysfunction of mice by the hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) pathway, and these results may be related to the regulation of T3 on the gut microbiota of mice. Additionally, oral administration T3 enhances the permeability of the intestinal barrier and reduces intestinal inflammation. Further analysis revealed that the genera Oscillospira, Clostridium, and Staphylococcus are associated with aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and reactive oxygen species levels in heart tissues, which could ameliorate hypoxia-induced myocardial injury in mice. In vitro cell models have also confirmed that T3 intervention can activate the HIF-1α pathway and inhibit myocardial inflammation and cardiomyocyte apoptosis. These findings suggest that T3 may be a potential candidate for developing functional foods to reduce hypoxia-induced cardiac dysfunction.

Acidic soil (AS) has a severe effect on crop growth and human health, becoming an urgent issue in agriculture field. In this work, an acidic soil remediation agent (ASRA) was developed based on humified-sugarcane filtrate mud (SFM) and red mud (RM). Therein, hour-level humification of SFM was realized in one hour by degradation-polymerization reactions induced by •O₂⁻, ¹O₂, SO₄²⁻•, and •OH generated from calcium hydroxide-activated sodium persulfate, fabricating an organic fertilizer rich in fulvic-like acid (FLA). To improve pH of AS, RM (pH 13.2) was added to the organic fertilizer to obtain ASRA. The as-prepared ASRA could significantly decrease dissolved divalent cadmium (Cd(II)) content in AS through hydrogen-bond, chelation, and precipitation interactions. In addition, pot experiment proved ASRA could remarkably increase AS pH, promote corn growth, and reduce Cd uptake. Therefore, this study provides a high-efficiency and simple method for SFM and RM recycling and remediation of Cd(II)-contaminated AS, which shows a huge application prospect. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

A new perspective on understanding soil microplastics: Composition, influencing factors of the soil plastisphere, and its impacts on the environmental behavior of co-existing contaminants

Microplastics (MPs), as emerging contaminants, threaten ecosystems, with their soil ecological risks becoming a global concern. When we try to understand the MPs-soil-microbial system and assess the ecological effects of MPs, we cannot ignore the role of soil plastisphere. The presence of MPs in soil may create a unique ecological niche for microorganisms, thereby altering the environmental behavior of MPs. Current review articles on the soil plastisphere remain incomplete. This review comprehensively summarizes existing detection methods for soil MPs and plastisphere communities, including their advantages and limitations. It details the formation mechanisms of the soil plastisphere and its impacts on MPs transport and degradation, where microorganisms play a dominant role. The analysis covers plastisphere-associated bacteria (e.g., Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes) and fungi (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota), as well as key determinants of their community composition (plastic properties and environmental factors). The soil plastisphere may exacerbate ecotoxicological risks posed by co-existing contaminants (e.g., heavy metals, organic contaminants, pathogens, and antibiotic resistance genes) through mechanisms such as enhancing microplastic adsorption/desorption capacities for these contaminants and facilitating horizontal gene transfer of antibiotic resistance genes, thereby altering their environmental behaviors. This review also synthesizes plastisphere-associated remediation technologies for soil MPs pollution. As research on soil MPs grows, the soil plastisphere's role in ecological processes is crucial. Its multifaceted impacts may exacerbate soil MPs risks. This review bridges knowledge gaps by understanding MPs contamination mechanisms through a new perspective–the soil plastisphere. Furthermore, it proposes priority and long-term research directions for pollution assessment and remediation.

Decentralized autonomous organizations(DAOs) enabled by blockchain and smart contracts is regarded as an effective tool to solve corporate governance problems. It can minimize the contract risks, principal-agent dilemmas, and other issues in corporate governance. However, DAOs also face a variety of governance issues, such as internal governance issues and external governance issues caused by the technical attributes of blockchain and smart contracts. DAO is a typical complex system with the characteristics of both social and engineering complexity. It is difficult for existing governance theories to solve governance problems in DAOs. The parallel intelligence theory based on the artificial systems + computational experiments + parallel execution (ACP) method is a suitable research and practical approach to solve management and control problems for complex systems. Therefore, we propose a parallel governance framework for DAO based on the parallel intelligence theory and discuss its key research issues. Finally, we construct a parallel governance system for GnosisDAO, and conduct computational experiments on its voting mechanism. The results show the defects of GnosisDAO governance mechanism and we thus propose further research directions. We consider that parallel governance represents the future trend of DAO research and practice. This paper is aimed at stimulating further effort and providing helpful guidance and reference for future research works.

Microalgal Addition to Activated Sludge Changed Bacterial Community and Enhanced Production of High Value Fatty Acids

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of microalgae addition on bacterial and fungal communities and pollutant removal. Bacterial and fungal communities, pathogenic microorganism abundance, pollutant removal efficiency, and high value fatty acid production were investigated in a microalgae-activated sludge (MAS) system, with microalgae (M) or activated sludge (AS) system as controls. The results showed that removal efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus by MAS reached 71% and 97%, respectively, which were higher than those by AS. The abundances of pathogenic microorganisms and anaerobic fungi decreased substantially compared to those in the AS system. The MAS system enhanced microalgal oleic acid (OA) production twice as M system. Additionally, it was found that the pH variation of MAS was very different with AS and MAS system, indicating that the exchange of O2 and CO2 between microalgae and bacteria occurred in microalgae-bacterial consortia from another perspective. © 2022, The Authors. The coal mining process is affected by multiple sources of water such as groundwater and coal seam water injection. Understanding the dynamic mechanical parameters of water-immersed coal is helpful to the safe production of coal mines. The impact compression tests were performed on coal with different moisture contents by using the 50 mm Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) experimental system, and the dynamic characteristics and energy loss laws of water-immersed coal with different compositions and water contents were analyzed. Through analysis and discussion, it is found that: (1) When the moisture content of the coal sample is 0%, 30%, 60%, the stress, strain rate and energy first increase and then decrease with time;(2) When the moisture content of the coal sample increases from 30% to 60%, the stress "plateau" of the coal sample disappears, resulting in an increase in the interval of the compressive stress and a decrease in the interval of the expansion stress. (3) The increase of the moisture content of the coal sample will affect its impact deformation and failure mode. When the moisture content is 60%, the incident rod end and the transmission rod end of the coal sample will have obvious compression failure, and the middle part of the coal sample will also experience expansion and deformation.
