A Selective Moving Window Partial Least Squares Method and Its Application in Process Modeling

A selective moving window partial least squares(SMW-PLS) soft sensor was proposed in this paper and applied to a hydro-isomerization process for on-line estimation of para-xylene(PX) content. Aiming at the high frequency of model updating in previous recursive PLS methods, a selective updating strategy was developed. The model adaptation is activated once the prediction error is larger than a preset threshold, or the model is kept *** a result, the frequency of model updating is reduced greatly, while the change of prediction accuracy is *** performance of the proposed model is better as compared with that of other PLS-based model. The compromise between prediction accuracy and real-time performance can be obtained by regulating the threshold. The guidelines to determine the model parameters are illustrated. In summary, the proposed SMW-PLS method can deal with the slow time-varying processes effectively.

Recovering the controllability of Complex Networks

The studies on the controllability of complex networks popularly existing in natural, social and man-made engineered systems have been a critical and attractive subject for both academic and practical communities. To design and maintain a networked system under control, it is vital to explore the mechanism and relationship between the network layout and its controllability. For a fully-controlled complex system, potential malicious attacks and/or random failures will lead to the damage of its internal structure, such as the breakdown of certain control nodes or the loss of the links between state nodes. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of degree of controllability to quantify the control level of the networks. And for the networks whose degree of controllability is not full, we propose two novel optimal recovering strategies, OAN (short for optimal adding-node) strategy and OAE (short for optimal adding-edge) strategy, to repair their controllability. The results of experiments conducted on the various real and model networks demonstrate the effectiveness of these two strategies and the better performance compared to their randomized counterparts, RAN (short for randomized adding-node) strategy and RAE (short for randomized adding-edge) strategy.

Integration Optimization of Production and Utility System for Refinery-wide Planning

Traditional optimization of production system and utility system is carried out separately which cannot ensure that the entire refinery system is optimized globally. In this paper, a novel integrated approach is proposed to optimize process production planning and utility system operation simultaneously. A refinery-wide mixed integer nonlinear programming model is proposed and the traditional method and improved integrated method are compared. A real industrial example is conducted to demonstrate the effect of the proposed mathematical model. The results suggest that the integrated approach can provide not only significant benefits but also better energy utilization.

Cyclic Scheduling of No Backup Cracking Furnace System Considering Real World Operational Characteristics

Ethylene cracking furnace system is the heart of ethylene production. It can process different raw materials in the pipe group of each furnace and can produce the main chemical products like ethylene, propylene and ethane. In the real world ethylene plant, there are two operation modes in the furnace system, one has a backup furnace in the system and the other is with all the furnaces available online. Compared with the mode which has a backup furnace, the operation mode with all the furnace online has more benefits in prolonging the batch processing time and saving the operational cost. Considering some of the operational characteristics like shutting down for decoking and varying running capacity with the processing cost and product values, the scheduling scheme is optimized to achieve the best economic performance of the cracking furnace system. In this paper, an improved MINLP model considering some real world operational characteristics under the no backup furnace operation mode is developed and solved by a new heuristic iterative solving method. The feasibility and the efficiency of the model is demonstrated through a numerical case study from a real world plant.

Inspired by the biological RNA, a circular genetic operators based RNA genetic algorithm (cRNA-GA) is proposed to estimate the model parameters of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). To maintain the population diversity and avoid premature convergence, we design the novel genetic operator of the double-loop crossover operator. To allow the algorithm to jump out of local optima, the adaptive mutation probabilities are presented and the stem-loop mutation operator is adopted with the other mutation operators. The simulated annealing method is also incorporated into the cRNA-GA to improve local search ability. Performance tests conducted on some typical benchmark functions have witnessed the validity of cRNA-GA. The cRNA-GA is also applied to estimate the parameters of the PEMFC model and the satisfactory results have shown its effectiveness. © 2014 Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC.

Differential spatial modulation (DSM) is a newly proposed differential modulation technique tailored to spatial modulation (SM), which requires no channel state information (CSI) at the receiver. DSM can offer flexible tradeoff between the reception reliability and the system complexity. In this paper, we are the first to study the adoption of DSM in a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying system, which consists of a two-antenna source, a single-antenna relay, and a single-antenna destination, so as to reduce the burden of channel tracking on both the relay and the destination. We derive a general upper bound on the average bit error probability (ABEP) achieved by the system. Moreover, an exact closed-form ABEP expression and the asymptotic result are provided for BPSK signaling in Rayleigh fading environment. The same system setup with the adoption of SM at the source is chosen as a benchmark for performance comparisons. Simulation results validate the analysis and reveal a 3dB signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) penalty of the considered system compared with the benchmark.

It has been recognized by many researchers that accurate bus travel time prediction is critical for successful deployment of traffic signal priority (TSP) systems. Although there exist a lot of studies on travel time prediction for Advanced Traveler Information systems (ATIS), this problem for TSP purpose is a little different and the amount of literature is limited. This paper proposes a deep learning based approach for continuous travel time prediction problem. Parameters of the deep network are fine-tuned following a layer-by-layer pre-training procedure on a dataset generated by traffic simulations. Variables that may affect continuous travel time are selected carefully. Experiments are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed model. The results indicate that the proposed model produces prediction with mean absolute error less than 4 seconds, which is accurate enough for TSP operations. This paper also reveals that, except for obvious factors like speed, travel distance and traffic density, the signal time when the prediction is made is also an important factor affecting travel time.

With diversified requirements and varying manufacturing environments,the optimal production planning encountered in a steel mill has become more flexible and also *** flexibility provides the operator with auxiliary options to satisfy customer requirements through an implementable integrated production *** this paper,a mixed-integer nonlinear programming(MINLP)model is formulated for the optimal planning that incorporates various manufacturing constraints and the flexibility in a steel plate ***,two solution strategies are developed to overcome the weakness of solving MINLP problem *** first one is to transform the original MINLP formulation to an approximate mixed integer linear programming(MILP)using a classic linearization *** second one is to decompose the original model using a branch-and-bound based iterative *** experiments on various problem instances are presented in terms of the effectiveness and *** result shows that the proposed second method performs better in computational efforts and solution accuracy.

ZnO has many potential applications, such as, solar cells, photocatalysts, chemical sensors and biosensors. However, to extend its visible light response is still a great challenge. In this paper, ZnO nanosheets were prepared by a wet chemical method. The surface treatment of ZnO nanosheets was carried out using chloroauric acid, and then reduced with aniline. A series of characterisations were examined by TEM (transmission electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis). The experimental results indicated that ZnO nanosheets modified with a thin layer of Au/PANi composite exhibited wide visible light response. A chemical prototype sensor was constructed based on the ZnO/Au/polyaniline nanocomposites prepared and interdigital electrodes on flexible polymer substrates. The effects of surface treatment of ZnO nanosheets on the gas sensing behaviours were examined. The results indicated that the effective conductive channels for charge transfer and separation were formed due to the Au/polyaniline necklaces attached on the surface of ZnO nanosheets, and the type of conductivity of ZnO/Au/polyaniline nanocomposite changed to P-type from N-type with increasing the amounts of chloroauric acid. When the synthesis parameter of ZnO/Au/polyaniline nanocomposite was optimised, the gas sensitivity of ZnO/Au/PANi (polyaniline) was superior to that of PANi nanowire prepared under similar synthesis condition, and it has been found that this kind of nanocomposite not only possesses widening light response, harvests more visible light, but also presents effective channels for charge transfer. In order to extend the visible light response of ZnO, ZnO/CuS nanocomposite with heterostructure was prepared by a simple two-step hydrothermal synthesis. The as prepared ZnO/CuS heterostructured nanocomposite was characterised by SEM, photoluminescence, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. On the other hand, chitosan is considered as a very promising natural biopolymer. It holds not only abundant resource and low cost but also has excellent adsorption properties to a broad range of organic pollutants and some heavy metal ions. To improve the adsorption properties of ZnO/CuS heterostructured nanocomposite, a water soluble chitosan containing carboxyl groups was synthesised with graft copolymerisation. Surface modification of ZnO/CuS heterostructured nanocomposite was carried out utilising the self-assembly process between hydroxyl groups of ZnO/CuS nanocomposite and carboxyl groups of water soluble chitosan. Comparative tests before and after surface modification were performed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. To examine the surface and interface properties of nanocomposites, chemical prototype sensor arrays were constructed based on ZnO, ZnO/CuS nanocomposite, and ZnO/CuS nanocomposite modified with chitosan containing carboxyl groups and quartz crystal microbalance devices. The adsorption response behaviours of the sensor arrays to some typical volatile compounds were examined. The results indicated that, with comparison to ZnO nanostructure, the ZnO/CuS nanocomposite exhibited enhanced adsorption properties to some typical volatile compounds dramatically, and the effect of one layer modification on the surface adsorption properties of ZnO/CuS nanocomposite is also very evident and useful, which provides a microenvironment of biocompatibility for ZnO/CuS nanocomposite.
