Nanocomposites of Carbon Nanotube (CNTs)/CuO with High Sensitivity to Organic Volatiles at Room Temperature

In order to enhance the sensitivity of carbon nanotube based chemical sensors at room temperature operation, CNTs/CuO nanocomposite was prepared under hydrothermal reaction condition. The resulted-product was characterized with TEM (transmission electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and so on. A chemical prototype sensor was constructed based on CNTs/CuO nanocomposite and an interdigital electrode on flexible polymer substrate. The gas-sensing behavior of the sensor to some typical organic volatiles was investigated at room temperature operation. The results indicated that the carbon nanotube was dispersed well in CuO matrix, the CuO was uniformly coated on the surface of carbon nanotube, and the tubular structure of carbon nanotube was clearly observed. From morphology of TEM images, it can also be observed that a good interfacial adhesion between CNT and CuO matrix was formed, which maybe due to the results of strong interaction between CNTs with carboxyl groups and CuO containing some hydroxy groups. The CNTs/CuO nanocomposite showed dramatically enhanced sensitivity to some typical organic volatiles. This study would provide a simple, low-cost and general approach to functionalize the carbon nanotube. It is also in favor of developing chemical sensors with high sensitivity or catalysts with high activity to organic volatiles at low temperature.

Graphene oxide (GO), nano/micro-structured polyaniline (PANi) are some typical important functional materials, which have many applications in lithium ion battery with high energy, supercapacitor, catalysts, solar cells, nanodevices, chemical sensors, biosensors and biomedical fields. In this paper, GO was obtained by using chemical oxidation method at room temperature, and nano/micro-structured GO/PANi composite was prepared with in-situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of GO suspension. A series of characterizations were examined by TEM (transmission electron microscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscope), XRD (X-ray diffraction), the Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, UV-Vis, et al. The results indicated that most of the surface of GO sheets was covered with a smooth thin layer of polyaniline, and some domains of the surface of GO sheets were clearly observed polyaniline nanowires anchored. To examine the surface and interface properties of GO/PANi nanocomposite, chemical prototype sensors were constructed based on GO/PANi nanocomposite and a QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) device. The response behaviors of the sensor to some typical volatile compounds operating at room temperature were investigated. The adsorption features to some typical volatile compounds were discussed. Some key issues and modification ideas were suggested for further investigation.

Number estimation of controllers for pinning a complex dynamical network

Number estimation of controllers is a fundamental question in pinning synchronization of complex networks. This paper studies the problem of controller number in synchronizing a complex network of coupled dynamical systems by means of pinning. For a complex network with a symmetric coupling matrix and full coupling between the nodes, we formulate network synchronization via pinning as a linear matrix inequality criterion, and provide a lower bound and an upper bound of the controller number for a given complex network with fixed architecture. Several numerical examples with Barabási-Albert network topologies are provided to verify our theoretical results.

This paper is concerned with the problem of designing a time-delay output feedback controller for the master-slave synchronization of singular Lur'e *** on the generalized Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional theory, new delay-dependent synchronization criterion is derived by dividing the time delay into two intervals and designing different energy functions in each *** controller design algorithm is also given in terms of strict linear matrix inequality.A numerical example is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the design method.

Active control of Free Paraboloidal Membrane Shells Using Photostrictive Actuators

The paraboloidal membrane shell with free boundary condition is actively controlled using photostrictive actuators which can provide contactless actuation under the illumination of ultraviolet light. The governing equations of the paraboloidal shell laminated with paired photostrictive actuators are established based on membrane approximation. The modal control actions of meridional/circumferential actuators are respectively formulated and evaluated by case studies. Constant light intensity related to the velocity of the shell is adopted, and then the governing equations are written in a closed-loop form which can be solved with Newmark-β method. Considering the multi-field coupling behavior of photostrictive actuators, time histories of transverse displacement and control light intensity are simulated and evaluated. The results show that photostrictive actuators can effectively control the vibration of the paraboloidal membrane shell, and the photostrictive actuators oriented along circumferential direction can give better control effect than photostrictive actuators placed along the meridional direction.

Imprinted Human Serum Albumin with Antioxidant Activity

In order to create a new mimic of glutathione peroxidase（GPx）, bioimprinting was used to generate gluta-thione（GSH） binding site and chemical modification was used to incorporate catalytic group selenocystine（Sec）. Human serum albumin（HSA） and S-substituted dinitrophenyl glutathione（GSH-S-DNP） were chosen as the imprinted matrix and imprinting template, respectively, to generate a GSH-imprinted protein（GSH-HSA） by bioimprinting. Sec was incorporated into the GSH-HSA by chemical modification to give a new GPx mimic（Se-GSH-HSA）. Se-GSH-HSA displayed considerably higher GPx activity than non-printed HSA（Se-HSA）. The enzymic properties and kinetics of Se-GSH-HSA were studied. Moreover, Se-GSH-HSA was confirmed to have stronger antioxidant ability to protect mitochondria against oxidative damage with ferrous sulfate/ascorbate-induced mitochondria damage model, indicating that Se-GSH-HSA has potential application in medicine.

Important users are high-status vertices in social networks. They are everywhere in most fields of society and have big impact on those around them. Although a lot of effort has been made on identifying important users, the efficient methods still need to be developed, especially for the web users from Sina microblog, which is the most popular social networking sites in China and has unique characteristics. In this paper, a machine learning-based method which only uses several attributes on Naive Bayes Classifiers (NBC) and Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) was proposed to identify important users. Initial experiments indicate that our method is effective. The result of "high" category has more than 55% accuracy rate. We find the NBC can identify more important users while BPNN has higher accuracy rate. What's more, the numbers of follower and followings in Sina microblog is independent.

A Multi-level Approach for Complex Fault Isolation Based on Structured Residuals

In industrial processes,there exist faults that have complex effect on process *** and simple faults are defined according to their effect *** conventional approaches based on structured residuals cannot isolate complex *** paper presents a multi-level strategy for complex fault *** extraction procedure is employed to reduce the complex faults to simple ones and assign them to several *** each level,faults are isolated by their different responses in the structured *** residual is obtained insensitive to one fault but more sensitive to *** faults on different levels are verified to have different residual responses and will not be *** entire incidence matrix containing residual response characteristics of all faults is obtained,based on which faults can be *** proposed method is applied in the Tennessee Eastman process example,and the effectiveness and advantage are demonstrated.

A new control performance assessment method based on a structured residual for multi-stage batch processes is presented. After separating the process into different stages according to reference signal dynamics, based on specific tracking and regulatory requirements of different stage, a structured residual focusing on deterministic part of output error with different weights on each stage is minimized to form the performance benchmark. In this way, it explores the equilibrium control effect in tracking and regulatory stages of batch processes in the whole batch sense. The best control performance with respect to stage balance and the overall optimal controller settings are searched using Newton's method. The application to an exothermic chemical batch reactor shows its effectiveness and feasibility. © 2011 Zhejiang University.

The paper discusses two important classification techniques, Fisher's linear discriminated analysis (FLDA) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). First, we propose a theoretical discussion, and then implement FLDA and SVM on several datasets of two classes and multiclass, a comparative experimental analysis among these two techniques aims at exploring and assessing the performance of FLDA and SVM classifiers. To sustain such analysis, the two classification techniques are compared with different training data sets and testing data sets. Different performance indicators have been used to support our experimental studies in a detailed and accurate way such as the classification accuracy. The results obtained on different datasets conclude that FLDA and SVM are valid and effective approaches for pattern classification and conclude their different performance and problems with different size datasets. Meanwhile, the paper employs a non-traditional method to get the training and testing data set, and concludes detailed pros and cons from the experiment results.
