Model predictive control technology can now be found widely in a variety of applications including petroleum, chemical and papermaking industries. An approach is proposed to decide a benchmark and monitor model predictive control performance on-line. A performance measure based on multi-step prediction error benchmark is shown to be more realistic without the requirement of process models or interactor matrix. A practical on-line monitoring strategy is presented which emphasizes the use of routine operating data plus the order of the interactor matrix to determine when it becomes worthwhile to re-identify the plant dynamics and re-install the model predictive control application.

To avoid the problem of estimating a general interactor, an improved computational method for user-specified benchmark is presented in this paper. The improved user-specified benchmark together with the historical benchmark are then specified as two parallel benchmarks to form an integrated performance assessment strategy, which can detect any change in the performance of a control system and identify the potential improvement that can be made to the performance of the control system. Simulated examples are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed methods.

Model Management for Refinery Multi-level Simulation and Optimization

Abstract A comprehensive simulation and optimization platform which offers a lot of functions such as decision analysis, production scheduling optimization and process dynamic simulation is urgently required for today's process industry. But this will generate a series of model management problems because models integrated in the platform belong to different classifications and interact with each other in some special applications. In this paper, a model management platform for refinery multi-level simulation and optimization is introduced. The platform, referring to a classical model management framework in decision supporting area, integrates different refinery models for different users and can coordinate computational tasks between models for multi-level application.

Stabilization on A Class of Networked control systems with Random Communication Delay

Abstract This paper is concerned with the stabilization problem of wireless networked control systems with network-induced delays of time-varying Markovian characterization. The effects of the sample rate changing on the network induced delay is the main topic. At first place, the time delay matrices changing stochastically and arbitrarily are considered. A state feedback controller is designed to guarantee the resulting close-loop system stochastically stable. Following that, a bridge is built to give out a uniform work. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness and potential of the developed theoretical results.

The demand of hydrogen in oil refinery is increasing as market forces and environmental legislation, so hydrogen network management is becoming increasingly important in refineries. Most studies focused on single-objective optimization problem for the hydrogen network, but few account for the multi-objective optimization problem. This paper presents a novel approach for modeling and multi-objective optimization for hydrogen network in refineries. An improved multi-objective optimization model is proposed based on the concept of superstructure. The optimization includes minimization of operating cost and minimization of investment cost of equipment. The proposed methodology for the multi-objective optimization of hydrogen network takes into account flow rate constraints, pressure constraints, purity constraints, impurity constraints, payback period, etc. The method considers all the feasible connections and subjects this to mixed-integer nonlinear programming （MINLP）. A deterministic optimization method is applied to solve this multi-objective optimization problem. Finally, a real case study is intro-duced to illustrate the applicability of the approach.

A new framework to design immersion and invariance adaptive controllers for nonlinearly parameterized, nonlinear systems was recently proposed by the authors. The key step is the construction of a monotone mapping, via a suitable selection of a controller tuning function, which has to satisfy some integrability conditions|this translates into the need to solve a partial differential equation (PDE). In this paper this result is extended providing some answers to the questions of characterization of "monotonizable" systems and solvability of the PDE. First, adding to the design a nonlinear dynamic scaling, we obviate the need to solve the PDE. Second, for the case of factorizable nonlinearities, the following results are established. (i) It is shown that the monotonicity condition is satisfied if a linear matrix inequality is feasible. (ii) Directly verifiable involutivity conditions that ensure the solution of the PDE are presented. (iii) An explicit formula for the required tuning function is given, provided the regressor matrix satisfies some rank conditions. Hence, adding a dynamic scaling, this yields a constructive solution to the problem. © 2011 IFAC.

A new control performance assessment method based on a structured residual for multi-stage batch processes is presented. After separating the process into different stages according to reference signal dynamics, based on specific tracking and regulatory requirements of different stage, a structured residual focusing on deterministic part of output error with different weights on each stage is minimized to form the performance benchmark. In this way, it explores the equilibrium control effect in tracking and regulatory stages of batch processes in the whole batch sense. The best control performance with respect to stage balance and the overall optimal controller settings are searched using Newton's method. The application to an exothermic chemical batch reactor shows its effectiveness and feasibility.

In this paper, a discontinuous projection-based output feedback adaptive robust learning control (OARLC) scheme is constructed for a class of nonlinear systems in a semi-strict feedback form by incorporating an observer and a dynamic normalization signal. Since only output signal is available for measurement, an observer is firstly designed to provide exponentially convergent estimates of the unmeasurable states. Using certain known basis functions to capture the characteristics of unknown general periodic disturbances, the discontinuous projection type adaptation law can then be used to tune the amplitudes of those basis functions on-line to recover the unknown general periodic disturbances asymptotically. The estimation errors due to the unknown initial states, uncompensated disturbances, and the uncertain nonlinearities are also effectively dealt with via certain robust feedback at each step of the proposed OARLC backstepping design. The resulting controller achieves a guaranteed transient and a prescribed final tracking accuracy for output tracking performance. In addition, when the general periodic disturbances fall within the approximation ranges of the periodic basis functions, asymptotic output tracking performance is achieved as well. © 2011 IFAC.
