Multiple-model (MM) methods are effective in handling mode uncertainties and the variable structure multiple-model (VSMM) approach is one technique of the state of art. However, designing a better model set adaptive (MSA) mechanism is still a challenging problem both in theory and practice. In this paper, we present new theoretical analysis to evaluate the quality of model sequence sets in a nested structure which implies a principle - to find effective model sequence sets with the smallest size if the risk of missing real modes is small enough. A minimum entropy multiple-model (MEMM) approach is proposed to calculate the model sets with minimum Shannon entropy through feed back the online information into the fusion center. Sub-optimal MEMM algorithms are also designed with a particle filter. An example of maneuvering target tracking is considered in simulations. The proposed algorithms are compared to several existing VSMM algorithms and the results show that the MEMM algorithms are robust and effective in both estimation precision and converging rate. © 2012 ISIF (Intl Society of Information Fusi).

Influence of the Protective Layer of Polyvinylchloride Resin on Failure of LPG Vessel Caused by Heat Radiation

The mechanism of damage to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessel caused by heat radiation was explored, the pressure and the burst pressure of the vessel with a protective layer of polyvinylchloride (PVC) resin were investigated, and a criterion for the failure of the LPG vessel was proposed. The industrial site of Nanjing Refinery was used for the case study, and the effect of the protective layer of PVC resin on the failure of the LPG tank was analyzed. The results showed that the rate of the rise in pressure was significantly reduced by the protective layer and that the time of failure increased rapidly according to the thickness of the protective layer. A highly reliable correlation between the time of failure and the thickness of the protective layer of PVC resin was developed by data fitting. As the theoretical basis for the design of the protective layer of the LPG vessel, a criterion for avoiding the failure of the LPG vessel and the domino effect was proposed to be when the time of failure was larger than the duration of the heat radiation.

In [Dong, D. and Petersen, I.R. (2012). Sliding mode control of two-level quantum systems. Automatica, 48, 725-735], a sliding mode control approach has been proposed for two-level quantum systems to deal with bounded uncertainties in the system Hamiltonian. This paper further extends these results in two directions. One extension is to consider the effect of uncertainties during the process of driving the system's state back to the sliding mode domain from outside and we propose two approaches to accomplish this control task. The other extension generalizes the previous design approach to consider uncertainties described as perturbations in the free Hamiltonian. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a robust control method based on sliding mode design for two-level quantum systems with bounded uncertainties. An eigenstate of the two-level quantum system is identified as a sliding mode. The objective is to design a control law to steer the system's state into the sliding mode domain and then maintain it in that domain when bounded uncertainties exist in the system Hamiltonian. We propose a controller design method using the Lyapunov methodology and periodic projective measurements. In particular, we give conditions for designing such a control law, which can guarantee the desired robustness in the presence of the uncertainties. The sliding mode control method has potential applications to quantum information processing with uncertainties. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

For very long period, most of the research activities in the community have always focused on methods for multiple leveled decisions and optimizations. The aimed issues of these methods ranged from a single process to SCM, as well as goals under EWO that is now catching more and more attentions. Concretely, at the production section, these researches usually pay great efforts for mathematic modeling and/or computing methods for complex operations, such as multi-product and/or multi-purpose planning, scheduling and control optimization. However, few researches have pay attentions at and uncover the important issues about states observing, feedback as well as tracing at plant-wide and/or enterprise-wide, where some real difficult problems have been perplexing the effectiveness and practicability of P-MES (MES for process industry) hitherto. With the guidance under thoughts from EWO, the research presented here is aiming at this nearly neglected challenge that including great practical meanings. In this paper, the complex structure and characteristics of production systems as well as decomposition and aggregation relationships between the production system and computer integrated manufacturing systems (CIMS) are analyzed with the view-angle of multi-scale method. With important concepts employed in this paper, including key feedback parameters (KFP) as well as the fusing and the tracing aggregation of the feedback data/information, a kind of innovative model called TRF(tracking, representing and tracing) model and its key theoretical methods are promoted for production states observing and feedback. Analysis upon these key methods and their modeling mechanisms show that TRF model could effectively response to structural dynamics of the complex production material flows, which is essentially difficult for P-MES using the general model. The original Extremal Optimization (EO) algorithm and its modified versions have been successfully applied to a variety of NP-hard optimization problems. However, almost all existing EO-based algorithms have overlooked the inherent structural properties behind the optimization problems, e.g., the backbone information. This paper presents a novel stochastic local search method called Backbone Guided Extremal Optimization (BGEO) to solve the hard maximum satisfiability (MAX-SAT) problem, one of typical NP-hard problems. The key idea behind the proposed method is to incorporate the backbone information into a recent developed optimization algorithm termed extremal optimization (EO) to guide the entire search process approach the optimal solutions. The superiority of BGEO to the reported BE-EEO algorithm without backbone information is demonstrated by the experimental results on the hard Max-SAT instances.

This paper presents a new multiobjective bio-inspired algorithm based on membrane computing (MOBIAMC). Similar to the single objective bio-inspired algorithm based on membrane computing (BIAMC), MOBIAMC has a netted membrane structure. Most rules are different from those used in BIAMC. The proposed algorithm applies no operation on keeping the uniformity and variety of candidate solution set or non-dominate solution set in the process of approaching to the true Pareto-optimal front due to its parallel and distributed computation. The comparisons with three multiobjective evolutionary algorithms illuminate that the proposed algorithm is simple and computes fast with high precision in approaching to the true Pareto-optimal fronts of eight benchmark multiobjective optimization functions. © 2012 IEEE.

With the uncertainty in the prices of feedstock, energy and finished products, the profit optimization plays a critical role in making a chemical production enterprise more dynamic and flexible to adapt the changes in global marketplace. This paper presents the development of profit optimization solution with an integration of profit model and model-based genetic algorithm (GA) optimization, and its industrial case study on an ethanolamine (EA) production line. The proposed methodology and solution may also be applied to other chemical manufacturing enterprises. © 2012 IEEE.

An emergency control system for shipping is an indispensable part of the modern maritime operation system. Petri nets are useful for describing and studying information processing systems that are characterized as being concurrent, distributed parallel and asynchronous. In this paper, a generalized stochastic Petri net with finite capacity and inhibitor arc is exploited to model the emergency control system for shipping. The obtained model is analyzed using the software of PIPE. The analyzed results on modeling time and resource performance show that the obtained model is able to describe well the real physics system and provide some suggestion on improving the performance of the emergency control system for shipping.
