In this paper, we propose a robust change detection method for intelligent visual surveillance. This method, named M4CD, includes three major steps. Firstly, a sample-based background model that integrates color and texture cues is built and updated over time. Secondly, multiple heterogeneous features (including brightness variation, chromaticity variation, and texture variation) are extracted by comparing the input frame with the background model, and a multi-source learning strategy is designed to online estimate the probability distributions for both foreground and background. The three features are approximately conditionally independent, making multi-source learning feasible. Pixel-wise foreground posteriors are then estimated with Bayes rule. Finally, the Markov random field (MRF) optimization and heuristic post-processing techniques are used sequentially to improve accuracy. In particular, a two-layer MRF model is constructed to represent pixel-based and superpixel-based contextual constraints compactly. Experimental results on the CDnet dataset indicate that M4CD is robust under complex environments and ranks among the top methods. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In response to the national dual carbon policy, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) are currently attracting much attention. This paper proposes optimal CCUS planning for multi-energy system. In this multi-energy system, transmission network and natural gas network are coupled via conversion and storage devices in the energy hubs. The CCUS planning is formulated based on a source-sink matching method to analyze the CO2 capture points, CO 2 storage points and CO 2 transportation routes. Furthermore, the original CCUS planning problem is reformulated as a mixed integer second order cone programming (MISOCP) and subsequently solved to guarantee a satisfactory convergence performance. Numerical studies on an urban multi-energy system are implemented to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed methodology over conventional scheme.

Compared with separate solar or wind generation, the hybrid wind-solar-hydro renewable portfolio can achieve better generation characteristics due to their temporal-spatial complementarities. This paper proposes optimal portfolio of wind-solar-hydro hybrid renewable generation based on variable speed pumped storage (VSPS). In this portfolio, the complementarities of hydro-solar-wind hybrid renewable energy sources (RESs) are fully exploited via various conversion and storage devices for zero carbon 100% renewable supplies. Compared to traditional fixed speed pumped storage (FSPS), the VSPS has obvious advantages in power regulation and renewable accommodation, which is comprehensively modeled to capture its dynamic operational dispatchability and flexibility. The portfolio production, conversion, storage, and consumption are formulated via a two-stage framework, which takes the minimum system investment cost as the objective function. Case studies on southwest China are performed to show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed methodology on cost-effective accommodation.

Wireless sensor networks consist of a large number of sensor nodes that have low power and limited transmission range and can be used in various scenario. The nodes can be deployed in the long and narrow region, such as road, bridge, tunnel and pipeline, to get some interesting information. The linear topology of these network application is different other application and have special feature, such as multi-hop, long delay, long distance and low reliability. This paper introduces the concept of linear wireless sensor networks and discusses the classification of topology and key issue of this network. The application of the linear wireless sensor network, such as road, bridge, tunnel and pipeline is presented. The research challenges are discussed at last in this paper.

Internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling is a vital vitreoretinal surgery procedure. However, due to the thickness of just 1-2 micrometers and the intricacies associated with its varying density and adhesion, the difficulty of manipulation exceeds the physiological limits of human perception and operation. Surgical robot is characterized by high precision and stability. However, navigating intricate intraocular environments and handling minuscule high-precision areas remain enormous challenges. These include issues of uneven lighting, field-of-view loss, and motion blur. This paper proposed a perception method named ‘Multimodal Surgical Process Recognition based on Domain Knowledge and Segmentation (MSPR-DKS),’ designed to address these challenges and provide input for the precise control of robots. Moreover, a comprehensive dataset focused on ILM peeling during macular hole surgeries was established. Experimental results underscore the efficacy of this approach, with segmentation accuracies exceeding 99.27% for instruments and macular holes and an average accuracy of 98.97% in recognizing surgical processes. This study paves the way for leveraging domain knowledge and image segmentation to improve robot-assisted manipulation of soft tissues in ophthalmology.

Operating in narrow spaces is an important challenge in the development of robots. Redundant manipulators are one way to solve this problem, but their mechanism design and control method still have much room for improvement. In this paper, we propose a coiled cable-conduit-driven hyper-redundant manipulator (C-CDHRM) with great slenderness and flexibility. In terms of mechanism design, it considers both compactness and operability. By imitating the structure and behavior of a constricting snake, it can be uncoiled sequentially from a coiled storage state, led by the head. In terms of control methods, we propose a multi-layer control system that can make remote operations more accurate and reliable. On the one hand, guiding, segmenting, and following the path overcome the planning ambiguity caused by redundancy. On the other hand, conduit transmission modeling and cable length correction overcome the nonlinear mapping of cable-driven joints and were verified in experiments. Through tests, the mobile integrated system composed of C-CDHRM has an excellent performance in operation precision and accuracy, ensuring safety and accessibility in narrow spaces. Finally, in field experiments, the inspection and cleaning of various types of electrical equipment have been successfully completed, showing excellent application prospects.

This paper presents an adaptive narrative game system that focuses on sequential logic design. The system adapts a random forest machine learning model to estimate a student's current level of domain knowledge relative to the problem presented to him through his game-playing behavior data, such as time taken to find solutions, errors in solutions, and emotional indicators. Hints, prompts, and/or individualized lessons are then offered to the player to guide their learning in a positive and productive direction. Our preliminary pilot study demonstrates that the model can make accurate classifications, from which proper assistance can then be provided to individual students as they play.

The rapid development of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) communications calls for highly spectral efficient communication techniques under time-selective channels. Spatial modulation (SM) facilitates flexible trade-off between spectral and energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel modulation technique based on SM for V2X, which discards the requirement of channel state information (CSI) at the receiver and exhibits enhanced robustness against time-selective fading and Doppler effects. Our proposed scheme tailors differential modulation to SM and is named differential spatial modulation (DSM). Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to demonstrate the advantage of the new scheme in terms of bit error rate (BER) performance for both point-to-point and dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems in V2X channels.

Online progressive instance-balanced sampling for weakly supervised object detection

Based on multiple instance detection networks (MIDN), plenty of works have contributed tremendous efforts to weakly supervised object detection (WSOD). However, most methods neglect the fact that the overwhelming negative instances exist in each image during the training phase, which would mislead the training and make the network fall into local minima. To tackle this problem, an online progressive instance-balanced sampling (OPIS) algorithm based on hard sampling and soft sampling is proposed in this paper. The algorithm includes two modules: a progressive instance balance (PIB) module and a progressive instance reweighting (PIR) module. The PIB module combining random sampling and IoU-balanced sampling progressively mines hard negative instances while balancing positive instances and negative instances. The PIR module further utilizes classifier scores and IoUs of adjacent refinements to reweight the weights of positive instances for making the network focus on positive instances. Extensive experimental results on the PASCAL VOC 2007 and 2012 datasets demonstrate the proposed method can significantly improve the baseline, which is also comparable to many existing state-of-the-art results. In addition, compared to the baseline, the proposed method requires no extra network parameters and the supplementary training overheads are small, which could be easily integrated into other methods based on the instance classifier refinement paradigm. Discretizing Continuous Action Space with Unimodal Probability Distributions for On-Policy Reinforcement Learning

For on-policy reinforcement learning, discretizing action space for continuous control can easily express multiple modes and is straightforward to optimize. However, without considering the inherent ordering between the discrete atomic actions, the explosion in the number of discrete actions can possess undesired properties and induce a higher variance for the policy gradient estimator. In this paper, we introduce a straightforward architecture that addresses this issue by constraining the discrete policy to be unimodal using Poisson probability distributions. This unimodal architecture can better leverage the continuity in the underlying continuous action space using explicit unimodal probability distributions. We conduct extensive experiments to show that the discrete policy with the unimodal probability distribution provides significantly faster convergence and higher performance for on-policy reinforcement learning algorithms in challenging control tasks, especially in highly complex tasks such as Humanoid. We provide theoretical analysis on the variance of the policy gradient estimator, which suggests that our attentively designed unimodal discrete policy can retain a lower variance and yield a stable learning process. © 2024, CC BY.
