Human flesh search(HFS), a Web-enabled crowdsourcing phenomenon, originated in China a decade ago. In this article, we present the first comprehensive empirical analysis of HFS, focusing on the scope of HFS activities, the patterns of HFS crowd collaboration process, and the characteristics of HFS participant networks. A survey of HFS participants was conducted to provide an in-depth understanding of the HFS community and various factors that motivate these participants to contribute. This article also advocates a new stream of Web science and social computing research that will be important in predicting the future growth and use of the World Wide Web.

The paper presents a new approach on haptic interface control for NAO robotic hand. The haptic teleoperation of NAO robot hand raises some issues, mapping the haptic device dynamic being the most important. The mapping was achieved through Neural Network by determining a dynamic gain of robot haptic feedback. The results lead to the achievement of the haptic intelligent interfaces for the NAO robot hand control which can be integrated into an innovative haptic robot control system.

The intersection models, such as delay models and queuing length models, are the foundations of optimal signal timing for urban intersection. Lack of the field data of intersection, it is highly difficult to calibrate parameters of the intersection models. Due to the effects of intersection topology, channelization and traffic conditions on these models, obviously it is impossible for single model to be suitable for optimal control of various intersections. © 2014 IEEE.

It is well known that vertical take-off and landing(VTOL) aircraft system is a complex multi-variable nonlinear system with large disturbances. In order to control the VTOL aircraft system ef ciently, it is necessary to explore new optimal control methods to stabilize the system states. In this paper, we apply dual heuristic programming(DHP) to design the optimal controller for VTOL aircraft system. As a framework of approximate dynamic programming(ADP) algorithm, DHP consists of three modules: model, critic and actor. The critic module output partial derivatives of cost function with respect to state. It has many advantages such as good dynamics, fast convergence rate, and high control resolution. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of optimal controller for VTOL aircraft system based on the DHP algorithm.

In this paper, we propose LinedCut: a novel method for interactive image segmentation which requires only a single line drawing to identify the object of interest in the image. The handy interaction mode can address the problem of object scale very well. Our approach consists of the following three steps: first, a given image is over-segmented into superpixels using superpixel algorithm; secondly, a merging technique based on bag-of-color feature and k-means is applied to merge similar adjacent superpixel pairs; finally, a graph-cut based approach which exploits user interaction information is introduced to get the final segmentation result. Despite its simplicity, we show that the LinedCut method is able to achieve a performance comparable to the state-of-the-art. The method can be easily developed by replacing any one method among the three steps with other methods.

In the Still-to-Video (S2V) face recognition, each subject is enrolled with only few high resolution images, while the probe is video clips of complex variations. As faces present distinct characteristics under different scenarios, recognition in the original space is obviously inefficient. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel discriminant analysis method to learn separate mappings for different scenario patterns (still, video), and further pursue a common discriminant space for the cross-scenario samples. To maximize the intra-individual correlation of samples in the mapping space, we formulate the learning objective by incorporating the intra-class compactness and the inter-class dispersion. The gradient descend algorithm is used to get the optimal solution. Experimental results on the COX-S2V dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and remarkable superiority over state-of-art methods.

In this paper, a novel dual iterative Q-learning algorithm is developed to solve the optimal battery management and control problems in smart residential environments. The main idea is to use adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) technique to obtain the optimal battery management and control scheme iteratively for residential energy systems. In the developed dual iterative Q-learning algorithm, two iterations, including external and internal iterations, are introduced, where internal iteration minimizes the total cost of power loads in each period and the external iteration makes the iterative Q function converge to the optimum. For the first time, the convergence property of iterative Q-learning method is proven to guarantee the convergence property of the iterative Q function. Finally, numerical results are given to illustrate the performance of the developed algorithm.

This paper proposes a predictive maintenance methodology for a machine in manufacturing with deteriorating quality states represented by multiple deteriorating yield levels. Imperfect minor maintenance and perfect major repair are considered. The underlying yield level cannot be directly obtained. Instead, product quality inspection information is used as the observed system state. The optimal maintenance policy associated with each possible observed system state is learnt by modeling the problem as hidden semi-Markov decision processes and solving it using policy iteration based Q-P learning. Then the future maintenance time can be estimated by re-simulating the system model using the learned maintenance policy. A set of experimental studies is conducted to testify the effectiveness of the proposed methodology and to investigate the impacts of involved system parameters.
