A modular permanent magnet (MPM) machine is a remerging fault tolerant machine, offering the advantages of fault tolerance, high power density and high efficiency. In this paper, the analytical design of a MPM motor with halbach PM array is investigated and a general design procedure is presented. Moreover, finite element method (FEM) is adopted to compare the electromagnetic performance of the designed machine with that of the conventional one, including flux density, PM fluxes and back-EMF. Furthermore, a co-simulation model of the MPM motor drive is developed to predict the system perform, in which magnetic circuit and the electric circuit are coupled in time-domain. Finally, the designed four-phase MPM motor is prototyped and test. The experimental results are given to verify the theoretical analysis.

In speech communication, humans are able to perceive not only the acoustic features but also the articulation state from speech sounds. Some specific articulation configurations can carry certain non-linguistic information such as emotion. However, the relation between articulation and acoustic features is still not clear. To clarify such a relation, we analyzed speech data from the emotions of cold anger and hot anger based on an emotional speech corpus and attempt to realize the observations using a physiological articulatory model. We measured the changes in acoustic features when altering articulation states for individual speech organs using the physiological articulatory model. It is found that the cold and hot angers both have emphasized components in high-frequency region, while the former controls articulation and the latter controls the sound source of the speech production system.

We construct new families of multi-error-correcting quantum codes for the amplitude damping channel. Our key observation is that, with proper encoding, two uses of the amplitude damping channel simulate a quantum erasure channel. This allows us to use concatenated codes with quantum erasure-correcting codes as outer codes for correcting multiple amplitude damping errors. Our new codes are degenerate stabilizer codes and have parameters which are better than the amplitude damping codes obtained by any previously known construction.

The zero-error classical capacity of a quantum channel is the asymptotic rate at which it can be used to send classical bits perfectly, so that they can be decoded with zero probability of error. The study of zero-error capacities dates right back to Shannon and the early days of information theory. We show that there exist pairs of quantum channels, neither of which individually have any zero-error capacity whatsoever (even if arbitrarily many uses of the channels are available), but such that access to even a single copy of both channels allows classical information to be sent perfectly reliably. In other words, we prove that the zero-error classical capacity can be superactivated. This result is the first example of superactivation of a classical capacity of a quantum channel. We further strengthen this result to show that there exist pairs of channels, neither of which have any zero-error classical capacity (as before), yet for which access to one copy of the joint channel even allows far more delicate quantum information to be transmitted perfectly. This subsumes the first result, and also implies that the quantum zero-error capacity can be superactivated. But it is strictly stronger than either of these. Indeed, this is the strongest conceivable form of superactivation, and nothing similar is possible for standard Shannon capacities of quantum channels or for zero-error capacities of classical channels.

Based on adaptive and ℋ ∞ control techniques, this paper deals with the problem of active fault-tolerant control for a class of T-S fuzzy systems with actuator faults. The presented approach is dependent on a fuzzy iterative learning observer (ILO), which produces a control input adjustment term in order to compensate for the effect of actuator faults. Based on Lyapunov theorem, a sufficient condition for the stability of error dynamic systems is derived. The active fault-tolerant control strategy proposed in the paper is finally demonstrated in simulation on the near space vehicle (NSV) reentry attitude dynamics to illustrate its effectiveness.

Grasping simulation of an underactuated finger mechanism for larm hand

In this paper, the grasp operation of an underactuated finger mechanism is simulated with the aim to characterize and analyze its performance. The design of the proposed mechanism is based on spring systems that give suitable underactuation characteristics. A CAD model is proposed and then it is used in a procedure for numerical simulation. Simulation results show suitable capability for grasping a wide range of objects in size and shape by operating the mechanism inside the finger body. The achieved grasp has been simulated as a human-like functionality with a grasp contact in each phalanx.

The tensor rank (also known as generalized Schmidt rank) of multipartite pure states plays an important role in the study of entanglement classifications and transformations. We employ powerful tools from the theory of homogeneous polynomials to investigate the tensor rank of symmetric states such as the tripartite state |W3⟩=13(|100⟩+|010⟩+|001⟩) and its N-partite generalization |WN⟩. Previous tensor rank estimates are dramatically improved and we show that (i) three copies of |W3⟩ have a rank of either 15 or 16, (ii) two copies of |WN⟩ have a rank of 3N−2, and (iii) n copies of |WN⟩ have a rank of O(N). A remarkable consequence of these results is that certain multipartite transformations, impossible even probabilistically, can become possible when performed in multiple-copy bunches or when assisted by some catalyzing state. This effect is impossible for bipartite pure states.

With increasing air traffic flow, the increasingly complex air traffic situation has raised possibility of conflicts, which requires higher timeliness and accuracy for conflict detection. Based on the rapidly growing air traffic control technologies, such as radars with excellent accuracy, a modified unscented particle filter (MUPF) algorithm is introduced to perform real-time aircraft status estimation. Compared to traditional unscented particle filter (UPF) algorithm, MUPF uses fewer particles and generates higher accuracy, resulting in considerable reduction in amount of computation. The simulation results show that MUPF has higher accuracy than UPF with the same number of particles, and in conflict detection, it also surpass UPF with lower rate of false alert, higher rate of success alert and smaller error.

The impact of spinal cord injury (SCI) on potential functional reorganization in neuronal populations in motor cortical areas remains unknown, though its influence on functional recovery may be significant. The cortical neuronal data was recorded from a monkey while it was trained to walk bipedally on a treadmill both before and after spinal cord injury. By using the correlation coefficients between different neurons, we constructed graphs for multiple steps in different sessions. The global efficiency of the graph was then calculated to investigate the effect of SCI on the neuronal activity patterns and how the correlation between the neurons changes as the functional recovery continued. Our results indicate that the observed significant changes in neuronal activity patterns in the motor cortex, although preliminary, suggest that the patterns of functional reorganization (neural plasticity) in motor areas of the cortex correlate and contribute to the functional recovery.
