Semantic cohesion is one kind of semantic relation between two words. It could be represented by the relation between the respective semantic meanings of the two words, and is useful for WSD problem in a collocation. In this paper, an HMM model was proposed to automatically label semantic meaning pairs for collocations composed of a noun and a verb. In order to find a suitable system of semantic class to represent individual word, three semantic classification methods based on the information from HowNet system, are proposed and compared with each other. The experimental results showed that one of the three classifications is appropriate for representing individual word. And these results also showed that the HMM model is helpful to captures the semantic cohesions properly.

The application of possibility theory to maintenance policies is proposed in this paper. The lifetime of a component is modeled as a fuzzy variable. Two types of replacement policies-block replacement and age replacement with fuzzy lifetimes are investigated. The theorems show that the long-run average fuzzy reward per unit time in both policies is just the expected cost per unit of time. In order to solve the proposed models, a hybrid intelligent algorithm is employed. Finally, numerical examples are provided for the sake of illustration.

Index structure that enables efficient similarity queries in high-dimensional space is crucial for many applications. This paper discusses the indexing problem in dataset composed of partially clustered data, which exists in many applications. Current index methods are inefficient with partially clustered datasets. The dynamic and adaptive index structure presented here, called a multi-cluster tree (MC-tree), consists of a set of height-balanced trees for indexing. This index structure improves the querying efficiency in three ways: 1) Most bounding regions achieve uniform distributions, which results in fewer splits and less overlap compared with a single indexing tree. 2) The clusters in the dataset are dynamically detected when the index is updated. 3) The query process does not involve a sequential scan. The MC-tree was shown to be better than hierarchical and cluster-based indexes for the partially clustered datasets.

Using data from a bulletin board system (BBS), we constructed reply networks for various boards, which can be considered as social networks connecting people of the same interests. In these networks, identifications (IDs) are treated as nodes and reply articles set up links. We investigated some statistics on these reply networks, such as clustering coefficients, characteristic path lengths, degree distributions, etc., and showed small-world characteristics and scale-free degree distributions of these reply networks. Then we put forward a model of interest space, which is the basis of the reply networks. We indicated that the hierarchical and clustering structure of the interest space, together with overlapping interests of IDs not only result in small-world characteristics of reply networks on BBS, but also give rise to preferential attachment, which is a popular explanation for scale-free features.

A novel technique to estimate the position of an unmanned helicopter using dual GPS units is presented in this paper. Our approach is to use recursive least square (RLS) method to estimate the noise characteristics with AR(2) model, and adopt Kalman filter to estimate the helicopter position under AR(2) noise model. The uniqueness of our attempt lies in using inexpensive commercial GPS units. Simulation results of the estimation system show its effect.

In reality, processing times are often imprecise and this imprecision is critical for the scheduling procedure. This research deals with flow-shop scheduling in rough environment. In this type of scheduling problem, we employ the rough sets to represent the job parameters. The job processing times are assumed to be rough variables, and the problem is to minimize the makespan. Three novel types of rough scheduling models are presented. A rough simulation-based genetic algorithm is designed to solve these models and its effectiveness is well illustrated by numerical experiments.
