Although the modeling technologies for open robot controllers have been discussed widely, not much literature is devoted to the actual general modeling principles and strategies. The reason is that many researches focus on specific application fields. This paper accommodates for this lacuna and provides some general modeling principles and strategies. At last, the actual new modeling method Hierarchical Object Oriented Petri net (HOONet) which has been proved to be an effective modeling methodology, is used to illustrate the modeling strategies.

A hidden Markov model (HMM) has been applied to the problem of machine recognition of Chinese handwriting. The character image is segmented into a number of local regions and feature vectors of these regions are extracted The feature vectors are then used to get the observations for the HMM. The states of the HMM are to reflect the characteristic space structures of the character and its identities are obtained through the training samples using some algorithms. Two kinds of HMM are built and two more simple nearest neighbor classifiers (NN) based on the vector quantification process in the discrete HMM are employed The combination of the classifiers is presented Five kinds of features used to get the observations have been tried and three algorithms are adopted to determine the training process. The region-based approach to image retrieval has emerged as one of the most active research directions in the past few years. There are two crucial problems in the region-based systems: the weighting of regions and the use of relevance feedback. The former plays an important role in computing the region-based similarity of two images, while the latter can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of any CBIR system, if properly employed. In this paper, we propose key-Region, a novel region weighting scheme that is based on the user's relevance feedback information. The region weight that coincides with human perception can not only be used in a query session, but also be memorized and accumulated for future queries. Experimental results on a database of about 10,000 general-purposed images show the effectiveness of our weighting scheme.

It is very practical to apply multilevel classifier on solving large scale and complex recognition problems such as Chinese handwriting recognition. A multilevel classifier includes a high-level classifier (rough classifier) whose responsibility is to split patterns into different groups. In this paper, we design a novel rough classifier system that is used for Chinese handwriting recognition. Our algorithm is composed of two parts: clustering and classify. Our experiments show that the system achieves high precision on both training data and testing data.

A discrete-time neuro-fuzzy (NF) adaptive control approach is developed in this paper for the trajectory tracking of a robotic manipulator with unknown dynamics nonlinearities. Two novel design techniques - dynamic inversion constructed by the dynamic NF system and the NF variable structure control (NF-VSC), are introduced for the controller design, and the system stability and the convergence of tracking errors are guaranteed by Lyapunov stability theory, and the learning algorithm is obtained thereby. Finally, simulation studies are carried out to show the viability and effectiveness of the proposed control approach.

/spl omega/This paper proposed a new feature extraction method for Chinese character recognition by using optimized Gabor filters. Based on the theory of Gabor filters and the statistical information of Chinese character images, a simple but effective method to design Gabor filters was developed. Moreover, to improve the performances for low quality images, we modified the non-linear function used in previous research to regulate the outputs of Gabor filters adaptively. This paper also meliorated the feature extraction method to improve the discriminability of histogram features. Experiments had shown that our method perform excellently for images with noises, backgrounds or stroke distortions and can be applied to printed or handwritten character recognition tasks in low quality greyscale or binary images.

In this paper, the hardware architecture of a lunar rover prototype with six wheels driven independently is discussed. Six driving control modules with the same hardware configuration but different software serial numbers are connected via the EIA RS-485 network to control the six wheels respectively. Each driving module is responsible for the control of the steering speed and turning angle of a certain wheel, and can communicate with the host computer in the rover prototype in real time.
