Privacy concerns have led to the rise of federated recommender systems (FRS), which can create personalized models across distributed clients. However, FRS is vulnerable to poisoning attacks, where malicious users manipulate gradients to promote their target items intentionally. Existing attacks against FRS have limitations, as they depend on specific models and prior knowledge, restricting their real-world applicability. In our exploration of practical FRS vulnerabilities, we devise a model-agnostic and prior-knowledge-free attack, named PIECK (Popular Item Embedding based Attack). The core module of PIECK is popular item mining, which leverages embedding changes during FRS training to effectively identify the popular items. Built upon the core module, PIECK branches into two diverse solutions: The PIECKIPE solution employs an item popularity enhancement module, which aligns the embeddings of targeted items with the mined popular items to increase item exposure. The PIECKUEA further enhances the robustness of the attack by using a user embedding approximation module, which approximates private user embeddings using mined popular items. Upon identifying PIECK, we evaluate existing federated defense methods and find them ineffective against PIECK, as poisonous gradients inevitably overwhelm the cold target items. We then propose a novel defense method by introducing two regularization terms during user training, which constrain item popularity enhancement and user embedding approximation while preserving FRS performance. We evaluate PIECK and its defense across two base models, three real datasets, four top-tier attacks, and six general defense methods, affirming the efficacy of both PIECK and its defense. © 2024 IEEE.

Formal methods (FM) are innovative methods which employ mathematical notations to specify explicit and precise requirements. This paper presents a formal model of an automated teller machine (ATM) using Object Constraint Language (OCL) to illustrate the benefits of employing FM to develop commercial applications. FM provide a mathematically rigorous framework for specifying, developing, and verifying software systems. It enhances reliability, robustness, and security. FM plays a crucial role in the context of ATM, which requires high levels of trust and correctness due to their financial and security-critical nature. Using OCL, we demonstrate how formal specifications can be applied to define an ATM system's precise behavior and constraints. It allows for the early detection and correction of errors, reducing development costs and improving overall system quality. This study argues that adopting FM in commercial applications not only boosts the reliability and security of the systems but also increases customer satisfaction and trust. Results of ATM development under OCL have been compared with traditional methods (TM), showing reductions such as 51 % in development time, 53 % in cost, 94 % in ambiguity and 97% in quality and customer trust. © 2024 IEEE.

Vertically Aligned LCD is one of the most widely used optical modes in LCD TV and mobile devices. It is also a very important category of passive LC displays used in Automobiles. It has the advantages of perfect dark state and very high contrast ratio for normal viewing. However, single domain VA LCD has the intrinsic issue of dead zone (contrast vanishing zone) in certain viewing direction in the voltage-on state, which seriously limits its viewing angle performance. Recently, the state key laboratory on Advanced Displays and Optoelectronics Technologies of the Hong Kong University of science and technology has developed an easy-to-apply multi-domain VA LCD technology that can be readily implemented in LCD factories without major investment and change in current production process. © 2024 John Wiley and Sons Inc. Ontology matching (OM) is critical for knowledge integration and system interoperability on the semantic web, tasked with identifying semantically related entities across different ontologies. Despite its importance, the complexity of terminology semantics and the large number of potential matches present significant challenges. Existing methods often struggle to balance between accurately capturing the multifaceted nature of semantic relationships and computational efficiency. This work introduces a novel approach, a compact multitasking multichromosome genetic algorithm for Heuristic selection (HS) in OM, designed to navigate the nuanced hierarchical structure of ontologies and diverse entity mapping preferences. Our method combines compact genetic algorithms with multichromosome optimization for entity sequencing and assigning HS, alongside an adaptive knowledge transfer mechanism to finely balance exploration and exploitation efforts. Evaluated on the ontology alignment evaluation initiative's benchmark, our algorithm demonstrates superior ability to produce high-quality ontology alignments efficiently, surpassing comparative methods in both effectiveness and efficiency. These findings underscore the potential of advanced genetic algorithms in enhancing OM processes, offering significant contributions to the broader AI field by improving the interoperability and knowledge integration capabilities of semantic web technologies. © 2024 IEEE.

With the increasing development of intelligent robots and wearable electronics,the demand for high-performance flexible energy storage devices is drastically *** this study,flexible symmetric microsupercapacitors(MSCs)that could operate in a wide working voltage window were developed by combining laser-direct-writing graphene(LG)electrodes with a phosphoric acid-nonionic surfactant liquid crystal(PA-NI LC)gel *** increase the flexibility and enhance the conformal ability of the MSC devices to anisotropic surfaces,after the interdigitated LG formed on the polyimide(PI)film surface,the devices were further transferred onto a flexible,stretchable and transparent polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)substrate;this substrate displayed favorable flexibility and mechanical characteristics in the bending ***,the electrochemical performances of the symmetric MSCs with various electrode widths(300,400,500 and 600μm)were *** findings revealed that symmetric MSC devices could operate in a large voltage range(0–1.5 V);additionally,the device with a 300μm electrode width(MSC-300)exhibited the largest areal capacitance of 2.3 mF cm^(−2)at 0.07 mA cm^(−2)and an areal(volumetric)energy density of 0.72μWh cm−2(0.36 mWh cm^(−3))at 55.07μWcm−2(27.54mWcm−3),along with favorable mechanical and cycling *** charging for~20 s,two MSC-300 devices connected in series could supply energy to a calculator to operate for~130 s,showing its practical application potential as an energy storage ***,the device displayed favorable reversibility,stability and *** 12 months of aging in air at room temperature,its electrochemical performance was not altered,and after charging-discharging measurements for 5000 cycles at 0.07 mA cm^(−2),~93.6%of the areal capacitance was still retained;these results demonstrated its practical long-term application potential as an energy storage device.

Modern Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are inevitably noisy due to the nature of their construction process. Existing robust learning techniques for noisy KGs mostly focus on triple facts, where the fact-wise confidence is straightforward to evaluate. However, hyper-relational facts, where an arbitrary number of key-value pairs are associated with a base triplet, have become increasingly popular in modern KGs, but significantly complicate the confidence assessment of the fact. Against this background, we study the problem of robust link prediction over noisy hyper-relational KGs, and propose NYLON, a \underlineN oise-resistant h\underlineY per-re\underlineL ati\underlineON al link prediction technique via active crowd learning. Specifically, beyond the traditional fact-wise confidence, we first introduce element-wise confidence measuring the fine-grained confidence of each entity or relation of a hyper-relational fact. We connect the element- and fact-wise confidences via a "least confidence'' principle to allow efficient crowd labeling. NYLON is then designed to systematically integrate three key components, where a hyper-relational link predictor uses the fact-wise confidence for robust prediction, a cross-grained confidence evaluator predicts both element- and fact-wise confidences, and an effort-efficient active labeler selects informative facts for crowd annotators to label using an efficient labeling mechanism guided by the element-wise confidence under the "least confidence'' principle and further followed by data augmentation. We evaluate NYLON on three real-world KG datasets against a sizeable collection of baselines. Results show that NYLON achieves superior and robust performance in both link prediction and error detection tasks on noisy KGs, and outperforms best baselines by 2.42-10.93% and 3.46-10.65% in the two tasks, respectively. © 2024 ACM.

Vehicular network technology has made substantial advancements in recent years in the field of intelligent Transportation systems. Vehicular Cloud Computing (VCC) has emerged as a novel paradigm with a substantial increase in data exchange within Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). VCC integrates cloud computing, vehicular networking, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. It enables Infrastructure-to-Vehicle (I2V), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), and Vehicle-to-Device (V2D) communication. VCC optimizes vehicle, cloud infrastructure, and IoT resources while addressing significant communication security and vehicle-user privacy challenges. To address these issues, we developed an RFID-based authentication protocol for VCC based on a Henon map using a hash function. In addition, we also incorporated a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) to resist physical tampering attacks. We validate the protocol's security formally and informally. The formal security analysis is conducted through a widely used RoR model. We use the Scyther simulation tool to verify the proposed protocol's security against various attacks. Moreover, we compare the performance of our protocol with similar existing protocols across important performance parameters such as communication and computation overheads and security attributes. The proposed protocol yields substantial improvements, demonstrating a 40.74% reduction in computation overhead and a 13.03% decrease in communication overhead as compared to related protocols, delivering both enhanced performance and resource efficiency. The analysis demonstrates its capacity to support secure communication in the VCC environment and satisfy desirable security attributes. © 2024 IEEE.

With the development of the internet and the demand for online shopping, intelligent online shopping systems have received widespread attention in recent years. However, existing online shopping systems’ security and privacy issues have not been well addressed. This article proposes a shopping scheme based on proxy t-out-of-n oblivious signatures, which uses t-out-of-n oblivious signature technology to ensure that users select multiple messages from a predetermined set of messages, ensuring the legality and privacy of the selection while using proxy signature technology to provide the attribute of signature unforgeability. We have analyzed the correctness of the proposed scheme and demonstrated its security in terms of integrity, unforgeability, confidentiality of selected messages, selection restriction, non-repetitive, verifiability, distinguishability, non-repudiation, and prevention of abuse. Our scheme has lower computational and communication costs than other oblivious signature schemes. In addition, the privacy-preserving multi-choice shopping scheme we propose enables users to shop more securely and conveniently. © (2024), (International Journal of Network Security).
