Multi-task learning (MTL) is a powerful technique in machine learning that enables the simultaneous training of multiple tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel MTL approach for the recognition of emotions, speakers, and gender in speech signals. Our approach presents a novel deep learning model called the Cascade Temporal Convolutional Network (CTCN to handle MTL efficiently. CTCN is designed to effectively improve the parallel processing ability of the model in multitasking learning. It provides an effective solution for improving the performance of deep learning in multitasking scenarios. CTCN is particularly adept at processing sequences of data with varying lengths and extracting features that are relevant to multiple tasks. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CTCN approach for MTL achieves significantly superior performance on all tasks on benchmark datasets compared to other deep learning models. This study will inspire more future work in the MTL field. © 2023 IEEE.

In recent years, path planning algorithms have played a crucial role in addressing complex navigation problems in various domains, including robotics, autonomous vehicles, and virtual simulations. This abstract introduces a improved path planning algorithm called Informed RRT*-connect based on APF, which combines the strengths of the fast bidirectional rapidly-exploring random tree (RRT-connect) algorithm and the informed RRT* algorithm. The proposed algorithm aims to efficiently find collision-free paths with less iterations and time while minimizing the path length. Unlike traditional RRT-based algorithms, Informed RRT*-connect based on Artificial Potential Fields (APF) incorporates a bidirectional connection and rewiring of a new sampling point to explore the search space. This enables the algorithm to connect both the start and goal nodes more effectively and quickly to find a initial solution, reducing the search time and provide a better initial heuristics sapling for the next optimal steps. Furthermore, Informed RRT*-connect introduces an informed sampling strategy that biases the sampling towards areas of the configuration space likely to yield better paths. This approach significantly reduces the exploration time to find a path and enhances the ability to discover optimal paths efficiently. To evaluate the effectiveness of the Informed RRT*-connect algorithm, we conducted the simulation experiments on two different experiment protocol. The results demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of both planning efficiency and solution optimality. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023.

This paper introduces a particle-based framework for simulating the behavior of elastoplastic materials and the formation of fractures, grounded in Peridynamic theory. Traditional approaches, such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), to modeling elastic materials have primarily relied on discretization techniques and continuous constitutive model. However, accurately capturing fracture and crack development in elastoplastic materials poses significant challenges for these conventional models. Our approach integrates a Peridynamic-based elastic model with a density constraint, enhancing stability and realism. We adopt the Von Mises yield criterion and a bond stretch criterion to simulate plastic deformation and fracture formation, respectively. The proposed method stabilizes the elastic model through a density-based position constraint, while plasticity is modeled using the Von Mises yield criterion within the bond of particle paris. Fracturing and the generation of fine fragments are facilitated by the fracture criterion and the application of complementarity operations to the inter-particle connections. Our experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our framework in realistically depicting a wide range of material behaviors, including elasticity, plasticity, and fracturing, across various scenarios. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Multimodal Classification and Out-of-distribution Detection for Multimodal Intent Understanding

Multimodal intent understanding is a significant research area that requires effectively leveraging multiple modalities to analyze human language. Existing methods face two main challenges in this domain. Firstly, they have limitations in capturing nuanced and high-level semantics underlying complex in-distribution (ID) multimodal intents. Secondly, they exhibit poor generalization when confronted with unseen out-of-distribution (OOD) data in real-world scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a novel method for both ID classification and OOD detection (MIntOOD). We first introduce a weighted feature fusion network that models multimodal representations effectively. This network dynamically learns the importance of each modality, adapting to multimodal contexts. To develop discriminative representations that are conducive to both tasks, we synthesize pseudo-OOD data from convex combinations of ID data and engage in multimodal representation learning from both coarse-grained and fine-grained perspectives. The coarse-grained perspective focuses on distinguishing between ID and OOD binary classes, while the fine-grained perspective enhances the understanding of ID data by incorporating binary confidence scores. These scores help to gauge the difficulty of each sample, improving the classification of different ID classes. Additionally, the fine-grained perspective captures instance-level interactions between ID and OOD samples, promoting proximity among similar instances and separation from dissimilar ones. We establish baselines for three multimodal intent datasets and build an OOD benchmark. Extensive experiments on these datasets demonstrate that our method significantly improves OOD detection performance with a 3-10% increase in AUROC scores while achieving new state-of-the-art results in ID classification. 1 Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Virtual staining has shown great promise in realizing a rapid and low-cost clinical alternative for pathological examinations, eliminating the need for chemical reagents and laborious staining procedures. However, most of the previous studies mainly focus on thin slice samples, which still require tissue sectioning and are unsuitable for intraoperative use. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale model to virtually stain label-free and slide-free biological tissues, allowing hematoxylin- and eosin- (H&E) staining generation in less than a minute for an image with 100 million pixels. We name this ThickV-Stain model, specifically developed to virtually stain intricated and unprocessed thick tissues. We harness the ability of a multi-scale network to encourage the model to capture multiple-level micromorphological characteristics from low-resolution images. Experimental results highlight the advantages of our method for virtual staining on unprocessed thick samples. We also show the effectiveness of ThickV-Stain on thin sections, showing generalizability to other clinical workflows. The proposed method enables us to obtain virtually stained images from unstained samples within minutes and can be seamlessly integrated with downstream pathological analysis tasks, providing an efficient alternative scheme for intraoperative assessment as well as general pathological examination. © 2024 CC-BY 4.0, L. In smart classrooms, conducting multi-face expression recognition based on existing hardware devices to assessstudents’ group emotions can provide educators with more comprehensive and intuitive classroom effect analysis,thereby continuouslypromotingthe improvementof teaching ***,most existingmulti-face expressionrecognition methods adopt a multi-stage approach, with an overall complex process, poor real-time performance,and insufficient generalization ability. In addition, the existing facial expression datasets are mostly single faceimages, which are of low quality and lack specificity, also restricting the development of this research. This paperaims to propose an end-to-end high-performance multi-face expression recognition algorithm model suitable forsmart classrooms, construct a high-quality multi-face expression dataset to support algorithm research, and applythe model to group emotion assessment to expand its application value. To this end, we propose an end-to-endmulti-face expression recognition algorithm model for smart classrooms (E2E-MFERC). In order to provide highqualityand highly targeted data support for model research, we constructed a multi-face expression dataset inreal classrooms (MFED), containing 2,385 images and a total of 18,712 expression labels, collected from smartclassrooms. In constructing E2E-MFERC, by introducing Re-parameterization visual geometry group (RepVGG)block and symmetric positive definite convolution (SPD-Conv) modules to enhance representational capability;combined with the cross stage partial network fusion module optimized by attention mechanism (C2f_Attention),it strengthens the ability to extract key information;adopts asymptotic feature pyramid network (AFPN) featurefusion tailored to classroomscenes and optimizes the head prediction output size;achieves high-performance endto-end multi-face expression detection. Kick drum plays an important role in electronic music. When hearing an excellent kick drum sound from a reference music track, music production beginners always feel confused about how it will sound if we solo the kick track and why it sounds perfect in a specific song. Reproducing the kick of a music track is not easy even for professional producers and arrangers. To investigate the ability of artificial intelligence in separating kick-drum sounds, in this paper we propose an end-to-end system which is capable of separating multi-genre high-quality electronic kick drum clips from mixed song tracks. Unlike most of the previous music source separation tasks, we only focus on the electronic kick drum rather than the whole percussion track. First, we design a multiband data representation approach for non-pitched percussions such as kick drums, then adopt a multi-discriminator module trained on a multi-genre kick drum corpus to further optimize the separated kick sound. To the authors’ knowledge, this study marks the first attempt at kick drum separation with stylistic optimization. Objective and subjective evaluations demonstrate that joint multiband representation and genre-guided optimisation can form a high-performance framework, showing a promising solution to the kick drum separation task. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
