Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are fierce radio flashes from the deep sky. Abundant observations have indicated that highly magnetized neutron stars might be involved in these energetic bursts, but the underlying trigger mechanism is still enigmatic. Especially, the widely expected periodicity connected to the spin of the central engine has never been discovered, which leads to further debates on the nature of FRBs. Here we report the first discovery of a ∼ 1.7 s period in the repeating source of FRB 20201124A. This is an active repeater, from which more than 2800 FRBs have been observed on a total of 49 days. The phase-folding method is adopted to analyze the bursts on each day separately. While no periodical signal is found in all other datasets, a clear periodicity does appear on two specific days, i.e. a period of 1.706015(2) s on MJD 59310, and a slightly larger period of 1.707972(1) s on MJD 59347. A period derivative of 6.14 × 10−10 s s−1 can be derived from these two periods, which further implies a surface magnetic field strength of 1.04 × 1015 G and a spin-down age of 44 years for the central engine. It is thus concluded that FRB 20201124A should be associated with a young magnetar. © 2025, CC BY.

In the field of drug discovery and development, deep learning techniques have become a powerful tool to accelerate the discovery and development of new drugs. In the design and optimization of lead molecules, generative adversarial network and graph neural network are one of the prime techniques for accelerating research and development, because the former is based on the idea of two-player game to learn drug features to generate effective molecules, while the unstructured inputs of the latter are well-suited for the analysis of molecular data. Therefore, this study develops a new graph generative adversarial model, called PreZ-DGGAN, by inserting the graph neural network layer into the generative adversarial network. Within PreZ-DGGAN, the latent variable input of the generator is pre-learned by an improved graph variational autoencoder, which effectively avoids the mode collapse of the generative adversarial network, whereas the hidden layer of the discriminator is graph neural network layer, which is able to better learn the real molecules and judge the generated molecules as true or false. Experiments on two molecule datasets show that the molecules generated by PreZ-DGGAN have higher validity (100% on average) and uniqueness (91.5% on average), and the generated molecules are more diverse in structure. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Layer-Wise Learning Rate Optimization for Task-Dependent Fine-Tuning of Pre-Trained Models: An Evolutionary Approach

The superior performance of large-scale pre-Trained models, such as Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT), has received increasing attention in both academic and industrial research and has become one of the current research hotspots. A pre-Trained model refers to a model trained on large-scale unlabeled data, whose purpose is to learn general language representation or features for fine-Tuning or transfer learning in subsequent tasks. After pre-Training is complete, a small amount of labeled data can be used to fine-Tune the model for a specific task or domain. This two-stage method of "pre-Training+fine-Tuning"has achieved advanced results in natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Despite widespread adoption, existing fixed fine-Tuning schemes that adapt well to one NLP task may perform inconsistently on other NLP tasks given that different tasks have different latent semantic structures. In this article, we explore the effectiveness of automatic fine-Tuning pattern search for layer-wise learning rates from an evolutionary optimization perspective. Our goal is to use evolutionary algorithms to search for better task-dependent fine-Tuning patterns for specific NLP tasks than typical fixed fine-Tuning patterns. Experimental results on two real-world language benchmarks and three advanced pre-Training language models show the effectiveness and generality of the proposed framework. © 2024 held by the owner/author(s).

Diabetes mellitus (DM) induced wound healing impairment remains a serious health problem, which can lead to limb amputation and even shorten life span. Inhibiting ferroptosis of endothelial cells has shown promise in promoting tissue repair and regeneration. However, a majority of known ferroptosis inhibitors belong to either antioxidants or iron-chelators but with poor pharmacological adherence and even serious side effects. Herein, we construct a series of Prussian blue analogues-based nanozymes as ferroptosis nano-inhibitors to simultaneously achieve highly efficient intracellular iron capture and antioxidant properties. Through computational and experimental methods, the optimized Prussian blue analogues (MPBs) with highest iron chelating efficiency and efficacy (CuPBs) are screened out and both the CuPBs and the post-chelated products have been demonstrated to exhibit reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging activities. As expected, the CuPBs successfully inhibit ferroptosis in high glucose-cultured skin repair cells, thereby repairing their proliferation, migration and angiogenesis. Mechanistically, the CuPBs regulate ferroptosis by inhibiting iron accumulation and improving the antioxidant capacity of the Xc−-GPX4 system. Moreover, in a murine diabetic wound model, the CuPBs remarkably promote the wound healing by inhibiting ferroptosis and increasing the M2/M1 macrophage ratio, showing a 2-fold higher wound closure rate than deferoxamine (DFO). Collectively, our study presents a general design strategy on developing ferroptosis nano-inhibitors and provides a promising approach for treating ferroptosis-related diseases. © 2025 The Authors

Rethinking the Sample Relations for Few-Shot Classification

Feature quality is paramount for classification performance, particularly in few-shot scenarios. Contrastive learning, a widely adopted technique for enhancing feature quality, leverages sample relations to extract intrinsic features that capture semantic information and has achieved remarkable success in Few-Shot Learning (FSL). Nevertheless, current few-shot contrastive learning approaches often overlook the semantic similarity discrepancies at different granularities when employing the same modeling approach for different sample relations, which limits the potential of few-shot contrastive learning. In this paper, we introduce a straightforward yet effective contrastive learning approach, Multi-Grained Relation Contrastive Learning (MGRCL), as a pretraining feature learning model to boost few-shot learning by meticulously modeling sample relations at different granularities. MGRCL categorizes sample relations into three types: intra-sample relation of the same sample under different transformations, intra-class relation of homogenous samples, and inter-class relation of inhomogeneous samples. In MGRCL, we design Transformation Consistency Learning (TCL) to ensure the rigorous semantic consistency of a sample under different transformations by aligning predictions of input pairs. Furthermore, to preserve discriminative information, we employ Class Contrastive Learning (CCL) to ensure that a sample is always closer to its homogenous samples than its inhomogeneous ones, as homogenous samples share similar semantic content while inhomogeneous samples have different semantic content. Our method is assessed across four popular FSL benchmarks, showing that such a simple pre-training feature learning method surpasses a majority of leading FSL methods. Moreover, our method can be incorporated into other FSL methods as the pre-trained model and help them obtain significant performance gains. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Enhanced Privacy-Preserving WiFi Fingerprint Localization from CL Encryption

The WiFi fingerprint-based localization method is considered one of the most popular techniques for indoor localization. In INFOCOM'14, Li et al. proposed a wireless fidelity(WiFi) fingerprint localization system based on Paillier encryption, which is claimed to protect both client C 's location privacy and service provider S's database privacy. However, Yang et al. presented a practical data privacy attack in INFOCOM'18, which allows a polynomial time attacker to obtain S's database. We propose a novel WiFi fingerprint localization system based on CastagnosLaguillaumie(CL) encryption, which has a trustless setup and is efficient due to the excellent properties of CL encryption. To prevent Yang et al.'s attack, the system requires that S selects only the locations from its database that can receive the nonzero signals from all the available access points in C 's nonzero fingerprint in order to determine C's location. Security analysis shows that our scheme is secure under Li et al.'s threat model. Furthermore, to enhance the security level of privacy-preserving WiFi fingerprint localization scheme based on CL encryption, we propose a secure and efficient zero-knowledge proof protocol for the discrete logarithm relations in C's encrypted localization queries.

Cell association is a significant research issue in future mobile communication systems due to the unacceptably large computational time of traditional *** article proposes a polynomial-time cell association scheme which not only completes the association in polynomial time but also fits for a generic optimization objective *** the one hand,traditional cell association as a non-deterministic polynomial(NP)hard problem with a generic utility function is heuristically transformed into a 2-dimensional assignment optimization and solved by a certain polynomial-time algorithm,which significantly saves computational *** the other hand,the scheme jointly considers utility maximization and load balancing among multiple base stations(BSs)by maintaining an experience pool storing a set of weighting factor values and their corresponding *** an association optimization is required,a suitable weighting factor value is taken from the pool to calculate a long square utility matrix and a certain polynomial-time algorithm will be applied for the *** with several representative schemes,the proposed scheme achieves large system capacity and high fairness within a relatively short computational time.

Central Asia (CA) faces a severe water crisis exemplified by the shrinking Aral Sea. However, little is known about the entire region, particularly the numerous small water bodies that are vulnerable to climate change yet vital for regional sustainability. We examined water bodies as small as 0.0045 km2 across CA from 1992 to 2020, identifying 66,215 water bodies in 2020, 82.2% of which were previously unstudied. In contrast to the well-documented decline of the Aral Sea, other water bodies have expanded by 10.7% (8714.3 km2), with a net gain of 15,831 lakes since 1992. These findings challenge the perception of a drying CA and provide evidence of a warm-wet climate trend, which is redistributing water resources and creating opportunities for transforming water management to address the long-standing water crisis in CA. © 2025 Science China Press

Background and objectiveKnee contact force (KCF) is pivotal in both the study and degenerative pathologies like Knee Osteoarthritis. Traditionally, they are primarily estimated using musculoskeletal modeling and machine learning predictive algorithms. However, musculoskeletal modeling is limited by intricate experimental protocols, prohibitive equipment cost, and scalability challenges. While machine learning methods, though computationally efficient, exhibit suboptimal predictive accuracy. This study innovatively developed a Transformer model for predicting KCF, benchmarked against long short-term memory (LSTM) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) *** comprehensive database was constructed with gait data from 513 participants, incorporating three degrees of freedom of hip, knee flexion/extension, and ankle dorsiflexion/plantarflexion, constituting four input combinations for the models. Contact forces derived from OpenSim served as the ground truth. Root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2) were used to evaluate the performance of *** results indicated that the Transformer model demonstrated superior performance, achieving a significantly lower mean root mean square error of 0.02 body weight (BW) compared to MLP (0.54 BW) and LSTM (0.45 BW). Furthermore, the mean R2 of the Transformer network (0.99) was markedly superior to that of MLP (0.45) and LSTM (0.58).ConclusionsThe application of Transformer networks significantly improved the accuracy of KCF prediction, addressing the limitations of traditional musculoskeletal modeling and existing machine learning approaches, which was of paramount importance in both clinical practice and biomechanical research. © 2025, The Authors.
