Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) has been proved to be a standard solution to most cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The surgical simulator provides the trainees a new vehicle to learn this skill much more conveniently and effectively. The blood vessel model is at the core of the virtual environment. In this paper, a robust and semi-automatic approach to segment the abdominal aorta from the computed tomography angiography (CTA) is developed. The proposed approach employs the geodesic active contours method as the main component. The edge potential map is generated by applying nonlinear mapping function. The initial contours are evolved by applyging the fast marching method. The surface information representing the vessel is extracted by the marching cubes method. This approach has been proved successful for the construction of 3-D surface model of the aorta based on the CTA series.

In this paper, we establish a decentralized control law to stabilize a class of nonlinear interconnected large-scale systems using a neural-network-based online model-free integral policy iteration algorithm. The model-free approach can solve the decentralized control problem for the interconnected system which has unknown dynamics. The stabilizing decentralized control strategy is derived based on the optimal control policies of the isolated subsystems. The online model-free integral policy iteration algorithm is developed to solve the optimal control problems for the isolated subsystems with unknown system dynamics. The actor-critic technique and the least squares implementation method are used to obtain the optimal control policies. A simulation example is given to verify the applicability of the decentralized control strategy.

Robust scene-text-extraction system can be used in lots of areas. In this work, we propose to learn co-occurrence of local strokes for robust character recognition by using a spatiality embedded dictionary (SED). Different from spatial pyramid partitioning images into grids to incorporate spatial information, our SED associates every codeword with a particular response region and introduces more precise spatial information for character recognition. After localized soft coding and max pooling of the first layer, a sparse dictionary is learned to model co-occurrence of several local strokes, which further improves classification performance. Experiment on benchmark datasets demonstrates the effectiveness of our method and the results outperform state-of-the-art algorithms.

Recently, much more attention has been paid to the development of minimally invasive vascular surgery. Simulating behaviors of a catheter/guide wire in a realistic 3D vascular model for minimally invasive vascular surgery is a challenging subject. One of the main problems for an 3D computer-based virtual reality simulator is how to design a software toolkit primarily targeted to medical simulation. In this paper, we describe an 3D interactive virtual reality software toolkit and present an example of application to a virtual minimally invasive vascular surgery procedure. Pose variation is a major challenge in face recognition. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-pose face recognition method by learning associate appearance manifolds to model the connection of faces under different poses. The associate manifolds are built on an auxiliary set, in which each identity contains cross-pose face images. The basic assumption is that cross-pose face images from two similar identities can be projected onto similar appearance manifolds by pose-specific transforms. We first associate the input faces with alike identities from the auxiliary set. Then the manifolds of cross-pose faces in the training set are confined close to that of the associate identities in the auxiliary set. Thus, the connection of cross-pose faces is well modeled by the associate appearance manifolds on the auxiliary set. Formally, we formulate the assumption as a manifold-based distance minimization problem, so as to learn the optimal transforms. Experiments on the Multi-PIE dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper addresses the problem of task allocation in real-time distributed systems with the goal of maximizing the system reliability, which has been shown to be NP-hard. Firstly, we take account of the deadline constraint in order to formulate this problem, and then apply chaotic simulated annealing (CSA) algorithm to solve the problem. The CSA introduces chaotic variable to generate the number of perturbations of neighborhood selection in each iteration, which can be more likely to escape from the local minima. The effectiveness of CSA is evaluated by comparing with conventional simulated annealing algorithm. The results show that CSA has a better performance than SA, both higher reliability and less calculation time.

In the presence of negative weights in communication graph, bipartite consensus is an extension of the traditional consensus problems where the communication weights are all positive. An output-based distributed control protocol is established to solve the bipartite consensus of the homogeneous multi-agent systems. Bipartite consensus problem is equivalent to a linear stabilizable and detectable problem by introducing a gauge transformation. If the multi-agent systems can reach the bipartite consensus, then the signed digraph should be structurally balanced and contains a spanning tree. Finally, the implementation provides three cases to validate the effectiveness of our developed criteria.
