Modified weak-value-amplification technique for measuring a mirror's velocity based on the Vernier effect

A modified weak-value-amplification (MWVA) technique to measure a mirror's velocity based on the Vernier effect is proposed. To demonstrate its enhanced sensitivity and higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we use two cascaded Michelson interferometers with similar optical structures. One has a fixed mirror and acts as a fixed part of the Vernier scale, while the other, with a moving mirror, acts as a sliding part of the Vernier scale for velocity sensing. The envelope of the cascaded interferometers shifts much more than a single one with a certain enhancement factor, which is related to the free space range difference between them. In addition, we calculate the SNR based on the Fisher information with both the MWVA and traditional weak-value-amplification (TWVA) techniques. The results show that both the SNR and the sensitivity with our MWVA technique is greater than that of the TWVA technique within the range of our time measurement window. In particular, MWVA can present a viable and effective alternative to the TWVA technique out of the limit of resolution. Furthermore, by using the principles of the Vernier effect, it is applicable and convenient to improve the sensitivity and SNR in measuring other quantities with the TWVA technique.

This study integrated an improved equivalent-input-disturbance (EID) and a repetitive control methods to ensure reference tracking and enhance disturbance-rejection performance for a pedaling rehabilitation robot. A repetitive controller ensures steady-state tracking of a periodic reference input. An EID estimator with a state observer estimates and compensates for the effect of disturbances generated by patients with lower-limb impairment. The stability condition of the closed-loop system is analyzed based on the Lyapunov stability theory. Simulation results show the effectiveness of this method.

Adversarial training has become an universally accepted robust method to train networks defending against adversarial attacks. However, feeding networks with adversarial examples is a cumbersome process, and there is no clear explanation for the differences between networks with the same architecture that are learned by adversarial training and learned by natural training method. So in this paper, we focus on the patterns of network learned by adversarial training. For comparison, we visualize the weights and feature maps of networks learned by these two training methods on MNIST, and find some patterns of adversarially trained model that are important for defending against adversarial examples and that are unique to naturally trained model. First, we find that adversarially trained network denoises the noisy data caused by adversarial images and enhances the outlines of semantically informative content in feature maps. Second, we find that adversarial training performs model compression, making some of the channels of a convolutional layer have no activation on input images. Further observation shows that different from naturally trained model, which have different most activation channel corresponding to different input, adversarially trained model often has the same most activation channel regardless of input. This phenomenon also leads to a sparse network reducing 50% number of parameters and 87% computation costs, and the pruned network performs as good as original network after pruning the least activation channels without retraining. But the naturally trained counterpart loses more than 40% accuracy using the same pruning strategy.

The pursuit of 3D reconstruction from 2D images for nanomanipulation under scanning electron microscopy stands as a critical research endeavor. Previous methods either necessitates additional lighting which is difficult in standard SEM devices or relies on feature matching with low resolution and precision, further constraining reconstruction performance. In this paper, we propose a novel robot-assisted nanoscale 360° reconstruction approach, which simplifies SEM setups and maximizes the utilization of robot motion and feedback. By harnessing a nanorobotic system, we capture 360°multi-view images automatically with precise mapping information and camera postures. Sequentially, neural radiance field reconstruct the pixel-wise structure and synthesizing images from diverse perspectives. Experimental results using two real datasets demonstrates our approach’s efficacy, achieving PSNR of 28.1 and SSIM of 0.93 for nanotube reconstruction, and PSNR of 32.8 and SSIM of 0.98 for AFM cantilever reconstruction. These results validate the reliability and robustness of our proposed robot-assisted reconstruction method.

Change detection (CD) is an important preprocessing process in visual perception. Due to the difficulties of collection and labeling images in water scnens, the design and validation of the change detection algorithm is more difficult than expected. In this paper, we present a novel visual perception framework based on parallel vision for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The visual perception framework consists of artificial scenes, computational experiments and parallel execution. In artificial scenes, we construct a water scene and automatically generated pixel-level image annotation. Next, computational experiments are carried out on different domain dataset. The experiment results show that: 1) mixed images effectively improve the performance of change detection model; 2) domain shift problems still greatly affect the algorithm performance.

This article collected dengue-related information in China from News, Apps, Forums, Microblog and WeChat. We extract the 100 highest frequency of agenda settings from News, and built agenda setting networks of the five platforms respectively. Social network analysis methods are used to reveal the characteristics of these five agenda setting networks and the QAP is used to test the correlation between them. The robustness analysis of the results is applied. In this paper, we propose a hybrid algorithm that combines an improved Artificial Potential Field (APF) method with the Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm for path planning of an electric power operation robot manipulator in complex distribution grid environments. To address the unreachable target issue inherent in traditional APF, we introduce a distance regulation factor to optimize the repulsive function. This modification allows the manipulator to smoothly approach the target point as it nears, while the repulsion from obstacles gradually decreases. Additionally, to overcome the limitations of the traditional SA algorithm, such as its tendency to get trapped in local minimum solutions and its inefficiency in complex environments, we propose an adaptive temperature rise strategy. This strategy increases the temperature, enhancing the probability of escaping local optimal solutions. When the APF algorithm becomes trapped in a local optimum, the improved SA algorithm is applied to escape the local minimum. Once the local optimum is avoided, the algorithm switches back to APF to continue the path planning process. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed improved APF-SA algorithm adapts effectively to various complex environments, achieving shorter planning times and higher success rates compared to traditional APF and SA algorithms. It successfully resolves the unreachable target and local minimum problems associated with APF. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed APF-SA fusion algorithm is validated through experiments conducted on an electric power operation robot experimental platform for distribution grid applications.

Grid-forming inverter is widely used in grid-connected systems of distributed generation because of its frequency and voltage support capacity and good stability in microgrid, but its large inertia will affect the dynamic response speed of grid-forming inverter. In order to solve this problem, this paper introduces the loop that affects the dynamic response of grid-forming inverter, and carries out small signal modeling for active loop, analyzes the dynamic performance indicators and determinants of typical second-order system. Thus, a method of adding power feedforward coefficient to the forward channel of the power loop is designed, and the response speed of the system with or without feedforward coefficient under the unit step response is compared. Finally, the simulation results show that adding the power feedforward coefficient can improve the response speed of the grid-forming inverter during startup and power switching, then achieves the effect of fast control.

Cyber-physical social systems (CPSS) include cyberspace, physical space, and social space. Large, dense cities can be highly productive, innovative, and very green per capita, hence ideal for our future. However, the huge influx of new people poses enormous challenges to their administrations. Smart cities are becoming a reality, therefore, to achieve higher efficiency, optimum use of resources, management and to strengthen several features of modern towns, several elements of modern cities are automated and integrated into Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Cities and infrastructure are growing all over the world, in providing end-users with increased performance, comfort, visibility and convenience, the Smart Cities concept is critical. This paper will discuss smart cities and the CPSS concept intensively with some of its key technologies, challenges, and further development by using CPSS.

Dynamic subarrays (DSs) is an energy-efficient and cost-effective hybrid beamforming structure for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. In this paper, we investigate the nonconvex hybrid beam-forming problem of maximizing the average spectral efficiency of the point-to-point wideband mmWave MIMO system with DSs, where the beam squints are also considered. To address the nonconvexity of this hybrid beamforming problem, we first exploit the singular value decomposition of each subcarrier channel and water-filling strategy to get the optimal fully-digital beamforming. We then propose to leverage the Kuhn-Munkres algorithm to get the hybrid beamforming from the obtained fully-digital solutions, aiming to guarantee that every radio-frequency chain is connected to at least one antenna. Besides, we analyze the computational complexity of the proposed design. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of this work over the state of the art.
