We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19, during the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA 15th engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered ∼14% of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz, where we assume the gravitational-wave emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy 1 × 10⁻⁴ M_⊙c² and luminosity 2.6 × 10⁻⁴ M_⊙c² s⁻¹ for a source emitting at 82 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as 1.08, at frequencies above 1200 Hz, surpassing past results. © 2025. The Author(s).

To improve the efficiency of analyzing malware behaviors and increase the validity of the test data, this paper proposes a parallel target-directed analysis method for malware behaviors, which combines static analysis with concolic testing techniques. It first uses static analysis techniques to identify and locate those interactive or input points and sensitive behavior functions. Then based on the distributed platform, by combining symbolic execution and concrete dynamic execution together and taking malware sensitive behaviors as the leading target, the parallel target-directed algorithm of searching sensitive paths and the method of leading and approaching sensitive behaviors are designed. It leads to traverse the sensitive functions, obtain the sensitive paths which can reach the sensitive behavior areas by path backtracking, and generate the corresponding test data. Finally, it finishes the analysis and test of malware behaviors. Experiments show that, compared with fuzz and full paths covering and traversing technique, this method can generate test data more efficiently, reduce the number of paths to be analyzed, and improve the analysis speed and efficiency of malware behaviors.

Multimedia data, especially image and video data, have become one of the most overwhelming data types on the Internet recently. Considering the user experience and real application requirements, multimedia data always demand a real-time processing speed. As a result, the huge amount of such data make retrieving useful information from them not only data-intensive, but also computation-intensive, which poses significant challenges to current system and architecture designs. Unfortunately, most prior studies focus only on text based retrieval systems or traditional multimedia processing applications. As far as we know, there is no systematic study on analyzing the characteristics of multimedia retrieval applications and how they might impact system and architecture designs. In this paper, we make the first attempt to construct a multimedia retrieval benchmark suite (called MMR Bench) to evaluate the corresponding system and architecture designs. To embody diverse multimedia retrieval applications, we collect eight state-of-the-art multimedia retrieval algorithms which cover the whole retrieval stages, including feature extraction, feature matching, and spatial verification. To satisfy diverse evaluation purposes, we implement multiple versions for each algorithm, including sequential version, pthread version for multi-core evaluation and data-parallel (i.e., Map-reduce) version for data-center evaluation. Moreover, MMR Bench provides flexible interfaces through retrieval stages, as well as a tool to adjust parameters and regenerating different scales of reasonable input. With such a flexible design, the algorithms in MMR Bench may be not only suitable for individual kernel-level evaluation, but also capable to be integrated into a complete infrastructure for system-level evaluation. Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. Aiming at the existing IP geolocation approaches does not consider the errors of landmarks, a new geolocation approach utilized landmark calibration is proposed in this paper. At first, by assigning a deviation, the location of the landmark with low reliability is regarded as a possible area, then geolocating the target IP can be converted into a constrained optimization problem, finding the location estimation of target IP by solving this problem, as well as the real deviation of landmark. The algorithm analysis and experimental results show that, when a landmark is not located in its claimed position, our geolocation approach can still give a location for the target IP.

In this paper, we present a study on how to achieve Byzantine fault tolerance for collaborative editing systems with commutative operations. Recent research suggests that Conflict-free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) can be used to construct collaborative editing systems where concurrent update operations are commutative. This new approach is shown to avoid the complex issue of conflict resolution for concurrent updates to a shared document. The shared document is often modeled as a linear text buffer where each basic element is assigned a globally unique and totally ordered identifier. The linear text buffer constructed this way would constitute as a CRDT, which would make concurrent update operations issued by different users commutative. state convergence at all users can be achieved automatically as long as the users could receive the same set of operations irrespective of their relative ordering. However, it is not straightforward to guarantee state convergence in the presence of malicious users and external adversaries. In this paper, we carefully analyze the threats towards this type of systems, and propose a lightweight solution to achieve Byzantine fault tolerance with low runtime overhead. We define a set of correctness properties for such systems and prove that the proposed Byzantine fault tolerance mechanisms guarantee these properties.

The modular assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles enables the creation of a new class of two-dimensional nanoparticle sheets with novel optical signatures. Despite exciting advances, undeveloped issues still remain in terms of nanoparticle sheet design and potential applications. Here, we present our research work which describes a simplistic and general polymer-based approach to assemble core-shell Au@Ag nanocubes into periodic nanoparticle arrays.[1] These nanocubes are functionalized with polystyrene and spread on the surface of water droplet on a holey copper mesh. Upon water evaporation, the balance between the nanoparticle core-to-core attraction and polystyrene ligand-to-ligand repulsion forces led to the formation of a free-standing lattice-like nanosheet with ultimate thickness limit but macroscopic lateral dimensions. These sheets, which we termed as plasmene, exhibited unique novel properties such as localized gap and propagating plasmonics. Using focused ion beam(FIB) lithography, the superior robustness of these nanosheets allows it to be milled into one-dimensional nanoribbons and folded into geometrically well-defined three-dimensional origami structures such as cubes, hearts and even a ‘flying bird‘. Due to the structural homogeneity, mechanical flexibility and optical transparency of these sheets, we also demonstrated the application of these nanosheets as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS) substrate for chemical detection on topologically complex surfaces such as banknotes and coins.[2,3]

The typical features of graph algorithm represented by breadth-first search (BFS) were investigated, and a lightweight heuristic switch strategy was designed and implemented by automatically switching through two basic search methods to improve search efficiency. Based on discrete and random data access characteristics of BFS algorithm and execution mechanism of multicore processor, an analytic model of multicore processor architecture was established to guide the research about the operating characteristics and performance trends on the typical multicore processors. The results showed that the lowest Cache hit ratio is about 85%, pipeline stall ratio is more than 50%, branch misprediction ratio reaches up to 14%, and pipeline total utilization efficiency is only 35%. So the current multicore processor can't support graph computing efficiently. ©, 2014, Northeastern University. All right reserved.
