Pilot-Scale Photoreforming of Hydrolyzed Polylactic Acid Waste to High-Value Chemicals and H2 via Atomic Ru Integration

Photoreforming of polylactic acid (PLA) waste into valuable chemicals offers a promising approach for environmental protection and waste valorization, yet faces challenges of low yields and harsh conditions. Herein, a Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanotwin catalyst decorated with Ru single atoms and clusters is reported, enabling selective photoreforming of PLA into pyruvic acid (PA) and H2. It is demonstrated that Ru single atoms favor PA formation via hydroxyl dissociation, while the further incorporation of Ru clusters serve as active sites for H2 production. This synergistic effect significantly enhances photocatalytic performance, achieving 96.8% PA selectivity and efficient H2 production with a record-breaking apparent quantum efficiency of 83.7% at 400 nm. This approach is scalable for outdoor processes, utilizing direct 1 m2 sunlight irradiation to deliver ≈1191 mL h−1 of H2 and 47.27 mmol h−1 of PA from PLA waste, paving a viable pathway for large-scale simultaneous production of high-value chemicals and H2. © 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

An Innovative Damping Random Walk Algorithm with Compulsive Evolution for the Synthesis of Heat Exchanger Networks

The development of heat exchanger networks is considered a hot research topic within the chemical processing sector. In this regard, the proper design of heat exchanger networks significantly improves energy efficiency, reduces costs, and decreases carbon footprints. However, the design of optimal heat exchanger networks is often a challenge, primarily because the problem is characterized by nonlinear, nonconvex, and discontinuous attributes. Moreover, it is coupled with the prevalence of numerous local optima in the solution space. At a certain level of the optimization problem, the process becomes trapped in local extremes. Thus, the process will not be able to advance further, leading to a stagnation in the optimization. This study introduces an innovative damping Random Walk Algorithm with Compulsive Evolution (damping RWCE). The proposed method is an extension of the stochastic RWCE algorithm, which has received a lot of attention recently. The presented damping RWCE algorithm incorporates a damping coefficient to temper the acceptance of optimal solutions. This slows the rate of structural changes without undue interference. The added value of this approach lies in its thorough examination of both discrete and continuous variables, which, in turn, decreases the probability of neglecting potential solutions. This method successfully navigates out of local optima, increasing the likelihood of identifying the global optimum. To implement and evaluate the proposed method, three types of damping coefficients are defined. The method effectiveness is then validated, considering three case scenarios. The results demonstrated that the optimal total annual costs obtained in this study are more favorable compared to the optimal results listed in the literatures. © 2024, The Authors. The high penetration of renewable energy introduces increased volatility into the power system, presenting more challenging peak shaving and frequency modulation missions for thermal power plants that serve as schedulable power sources within the system. Frequent load cycling place higher demands on the operation stability of core power plant equipment and introduce additional safety risks. As the core system of the power cycle, the operational reliability and energy efficiency of the feedwater pump system (FPS) are crucial. Therefore, this paper focuses on the core equipment and parameters of the FPS, developing a digital twin model based on mechanism modeling method and neural network data-driven modeling method. By comparing the mean absolute error, root mean square error, and coefficient of determination of simulation parameters of different modeling methods, digital twin parameters with higher simulation accuracy were obtained. Utilizing these predicted parameters, an FPS fault diagnosis model (FFDM) for the FPS was developed. By calculating comprehensive deviation degree and the contribution of each parameter, fault early warning and source tracing were achieved, providing guidance for the closed-loop control.

Experimental and numerical investigation of two phase ejector performance with the water injected into the induced flow

When injectors are used in petroleum industries or sea water desalination system, it is a special case that the induced gas is accompanied by water, the ejector is in two-phase operation. In the present study, the ejector performance at two phase flow is investigated experimentally and numerically. The results indicate that: the entrainment ratio would decrease when the water is injected into the induced flow, as well as the pressure ratio. The maximum decrement of entrainment ratio is around 40.5% at sub-critical mode when the motive pressure is 1.0 MPa, the induced pressure is 0.2 MPa, liquid-air ratio is 22%. For the pressure ratio, the maximum decrement is 62.5% when the motive pressure is 1.0 MPa, the induced pressure is 0.5 MPa, liquid-air ratio is 2.87%. However, the lower the induced pressure is, the more obvious the effect of mass flow rate on entrainment rate is, while the effect on pressure ratio is just opposite. Moreover, the performance becomes worse in sub-critical mode than that in critical mode. The effect of NXP on ejector performance also has been analyzed. There exists an optimum NXP whether the two phase flow ejector is in critical mode or sub-critical mode. The optimum NXP for entrainment ratio enlarges from 3.6 mm to 4.4 mm with the increase of water mass flowrate, and is bigger than that of single phase ejector (the optimum NXP is 2.8 mm). This study may provide a beneficial reference for the operation of supersonic ejectors on two phase flow. © 2020 Xi'an Jiaotong University

Experimental and Numerical Study of Hydraulic Characteristics and Pressurization Deterioration Mechanism of a Three-Stage Mixed-flow multiphase Pump Under Gas Liquid Condition

The mixed-flow multiphase pump may experience pressurization deterioration due to the high Gas Volume Fraction, resulting in pressurization failure and posing a threat to the pressurization unit's safety. In this paper, a three-stage mixed-flow multiphase pump with closed impeller structure is designed and developed. The hydraulic characteristics and pressurization deterioration mechanism of the multiphase pump were investigated at various rotational speeds and inlet conditions using the experiment and simulation. As the liquid flow rate rises, the multiphase pump experiences a 'three-stage' downward trend in pressurization. The first booster stage has a greater capacity for pressurizing the liquid phase. The gas-liquid pressurization exhibits a wave-shaped downward trend due to significant deterioration in stage-wise pressurization when the liquid flow rate is low. Once the Inlet Gas Volume Fraction reaches the initial critical Gas Volume Fraction, the gas aggregates on the impeller’s suction surface is removed at the impeller outlet, creating an annular air mass. When this mass of air meets the fluid behind it, it creates a chaotic vortex that absorbs the fluids' kinetic energy. As a result, the first booster stage experiences a significant reduction in its pressurization ability, causing an abrupt decrease in the pressurization curve. © 2023, The Authors. Dual-loop circulating fluidized bed(CFB)reactors have been widely applied in industry because of their good heat and mass transfer characteristics and continuous handling ***,the design of such reactors is notoriously difficult owing to the poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms,meaning it has been heavily based on empiricism and stepwise *** the gas-solid CFB system requires a quantitative description of the multiscale heterogeneity in the sub-reactors and the strong coupling between *** article proposed a general method for modeling multiloop CFB systems by utilizing the energy minimization multiscale(EMMS)principle.A full-loop modeling scheme was implemented by using the EMMS model and/or its extension models to compute the hydrodynamic parameters of the sub-reactors,to achieve the mass conservation and pressure balance in each circulation *** on the modularization strategy,corresponding interactive simulation software was further developed to facilitate the flexible creation and fast modeling of a customized multi-loop CFB *** research can be expected to provide quantitative references for the design and scale-up of gas-solid CFB reactors and lay a solid foundation for the realization of virtual process engineering.

Study on supercritical water regeneration of bio-based activated carbon saturated with acid red G

The dye and textile industry commonly employs activated carbon adsorption technology due to its cost-effectiveness and high efficiency. However, disposing of waste-activated carbon has a significant environmental and human health impact, and it's a huge economic waste. This study investigates the kinetic and isothermal adsorption characteristics of Acid Red G dye adsorption by Powdered Activated Carbon derived from coconut shells. To effectively reuse activated carbon and maximise resource conservation, regeneration experiments were carried out using Supercritical Water at 24 MPa and 400 ℃ for 30 min. The experimental results demonstrated that, in comparison with thermal regeneration, supercritical water possesses the benefits of environmental protection, economic efficiency and extensive applicability. This is of considerable importance to the field of research concerning the regeneration of activated carbon. © 2024

The separation and transport of photogenerated carriers is regarded as a curial factor in photocatalytic H_(2)*** known in solar cells and photoelectron-chemistry,to strengthen the electron conduction for effective utilization of carriers,the electron transport material(ETM)is widely ***,inspired by the function of ETM,we adopted barium stannate(BaSnO_(3),labeled as BSO)as an excellent ETM which had the merits of high electron mobility,suitable conduction band position and simple preparation,to adjust the carrier kinetics of dye Eosin Y(EY)-sensitized photocatalytic ***,the photocatalytic system with the spatial sepa-ration sites of photogenerated carriers excitation and water reduction reaction was elaborately constructed,that was,dye EY-sensitized BSO(EY/BSO)for photocatalytic H_(2)*** photocatalytic H_(2)-production rate of EY/BSO(257𝜇mol·h^(−1)·g EY^(−1))in the absence of noble metals was 28.6 times higher than that of single EY(∼9𝜇mol·h^(−1)·g EY^(−1))under visible-light *** systematic and comprehensive characterizations,the formed electron transport channel by the bidentate bridging of EY on BSO could accelerate the transfer of photogenerated electrons from EY to BSO,promoting the effective separation of photogenerated carriers for the enhanced pho-tocatalytic ***,the water reduction reaction for H_(2)production proceeded on the surface of BSO that acted as the H_(2)-evolution cocatalyst,avoiding the use of high-cost noble ***,based on the well-proved ETM-based concept in the EY/BSO system,La-doped BaSnO_(3)(LBSO)with better electron trans-port ability was adopted to construct EY/LBSO system(344𝜇mol·h^(−1)·g EY^(−1))which showed better photocatalytic activity than EY/BSO.

The increased concentration of CO_(2) due to continuous breathing and no discharge of human beings in the manned closed space,like spacecraft and submarines,can be a threat to health and *** removal of low concentration CO_(2) from the manned closed space is essential to meet the requirements of long-term space or deep-sea exploration,which is an international frontier and *** liquids(ILs),as a widespread and green solvent,already showed its excellent performance on CO_(2) capture and absorption,indicating its potential application in low concentration CO_(2) *** this review,we first summarized the current methods and strategies for direct capture from low concentration CO_(2) in both the atmosphere and manned closed ***,the multi-scale simulation methods of CO_(2) capture by ionic liquids are described in detail,including screening ionic liquids by COSMO-RS methods,capture mechanism by density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation,and absorption process by computational fluid dynamics ***,some typical IL-based green technologies for low concentration CO_(2) capture,such as functionalized ILs,co-solvent systems with ILs,and supported materials based on ILs,are introduced,and analyzed the subtle possibility in manned closed ***,we look forward to the technology and development of low concentration CO_(2) capture,which can meet the needs of human survival in closed space and proposed that supported materials with ionic liquids have great advantages and infinite possibilities in the vital area.

Anchoring Single Nickel Atoms on Carbon-vacant Carbon Nitride Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Polymeric carbon nitride(PCN)has emerged as a promising candidate for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution,but its dependence on scarce and high-cost noble metal co-catalysts severely limits its extensive *** will be of great promise to develop non-noble metal single-atom co-catalysts with low-cost and high atom utilization to improve the photocatalytic performance over ***,single Ni atoms are successfully anchored onto carbon-vacant PCN nanosheets(CCN-SANi)via a two-step ammonia thermal treatment and photo-deposition *** calculations and experimental results demonstrate that the optical absorption property and the charge transfer ability of CCN-SANi have been significantly improved with the introduction of single Ni atoms to form Ni-N3 *** comparison to carbon-vacant PCN(CCN)loaded with Ni clusters,the obtained CCN-SANi exhibits 11.4 times increased photocatalytic performance,with the highest hydrogen evolution rate reaching 511μmol/(g·h),which is even 1.7 times higher than that of CCN loaded with Pt *** research proposes an inspiring and reliable strategy to design novel single-atom semiconducting polymers with electronic structures manipulated for efficient photocatalysis.
