Research on the penetration length of submerged sonic/supersonic steam jet

The continuous steam region generated by high-speed steam jet discharging into subcooled water is called the steam plume. The plume penetration length is an important index for heat exchange capability of steam jet. In this paper, the penetration length of sonic/supersonic steam jet at the stable condensation regime was investigated experimentally. It was found that the dimensionless penetration length increased with increasing steam mass ux and water temperature. Besides, the dimensionless penetration length of supersonic steam jet was smaller than that of sonic steam jet and decreased with the diminishing designed pressure ratio of supersonic nozzles. Moreover, a correlation was proposed based on the experimental data;the discrepancies between predicted and experimental penetration length were within ±15%. © 2015, Science Press. To simplify devices and reduce the high energy consumption in removal processes of air pollutants in fossil fuel-fired power plants, the compound amine sulphone solutions of N-Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were explored for the simultaneous removal of CO2/SO2/NOX. The dynamic experiments of CO2/SO2/NOX simultaneous absorption and separated desorption were carried out to confirm the feasibility of the experimental system and evaluate the performance of the studied compound amine sulphone solution. The experimental results indicated that the simultaneous removal of CO2/SO2/NOX was feasible by the compound amine sulphone solution, the separate desorption of CO2 and NO was realized when the regeneration temperature was set at 50°C and 90°C, respectively. Especially, the solution of 2M MDEA +1M DMSO showed the highest absorption capacity and desorption capacity. © 2015 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Hydrogen is an important resource in chemical processes. In the hydrogen network, many units are operating at high temperature and pressure, which leads to a large energy change of hydrogen streams. However, the recovery of heat and work in the hydrogen flows has seldom been studied together with the optimization of hydrogen network. It is obviously that the reuse of heat and work energy will raise the effective utilization rate of energy. The recovery of heat could be realized by heat exchangers. The recovery of work will be realized by rotary work exchangers, which are composed of several compressors and turbines with the same shaft. A state space superstructure is adopted to handle all the variables. The mathematical model is built based on exergoeconomic analysis considering both energy and economic factors. The optimization problem will be a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. The existing algorithms will be improved. A typical refinery hydrogen network is studied as an example. The state space superstructure, exergoeconomic analysis and proposed algorithm could solve the problem competently. The consideration of pressure and heat recovery could reduce the energy consumption and economic cost simultaneously.

Liquid drops hit against solid surface, which has an enormous influence on the mechanical properties of base solid surface during its service. Impact of the droplet makes the solid surface and some internal section of the base solid material generate high stress. The conical microstructure may decrease the dimensionless equivalent stress in solid. We investigated the effect of the microstructure with three different sizes by numerical simulation. In the paper, detail theoretic analyses of liquid-solid impact were carried out. Here the mathematics physics model was built to solve the liquid-solid impact problem The numerical method coupling liquid and solid region was designed and the impact procedure of spherical droplet to solid materials was simulated. We acquired the pressure distribution inside water drop and the transient equivalent stress field inside solid. High stress at the solid surface and some internal sections arose from impact of the droplet. The sections in solid with highest stress can be classified into the contact edge and the axis due to stress superposition. The stress in solid declined slightly at the condition with the microstructure (5μm high and a diameter of 1μm). The microstructure (50μm high and a diameter of 10μm) in this paper considerably decreased the average stress in solid. They may store liquid and yield a liquid film higher than the thickness of the microstructure, undertaking the droplet impact and acting as a cushion to the stress concentration in solid. These results may play a role in evaluating the base solid service properties based on the fundamental solution of liquid-solid impact and be valuable to understand the internal mechanism of liquid-solid impact, and are helpful to prevent the erosion of droplet to the solid materials. © 2015 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

A combined search, which joins a slow molecule structure search with a fast compound property search, results in more accurate search results and has been applied in several chemistry databases. However, the problems of search speed differences and combining the two separate search results are two major challenges. In this paper, two kinds of search strategies, synchronous search and asynchronous search, are proposed to solve these problems in the heterogeneous structure database and the property database found in ChemDB, a chemistry database owned by the Institute of Process engineering, CAS. Their advantages and disadvantages under different conditions are discussed in detail. Furthermore, we applied these two searches to ChemDB and used them to screen for potential molecules that can work as CO2 absorbents. The results reveal that this combined search discovers reasonable target molecules within an acceptable time frame. © 2015 The Author(s).

Analysis of accidental loss of pool coolant due to leakage in a PWR SFP

A large loss of pool coolant/water accident may be caused by extreme accidents such as the pool wall or bottom floor punctures due to a large aircraft strike. The safety of SFP under this circumstance is very important. Large amounts of radioactive materials would be easily released into the environment if a severe accident happened in the SFP, because the spent fuel pool (SFP) in a PWR nuclear power station (NPS) is often located in the fuel handing building outside the reactor containment. To gain insight into the loss of pool coolant accident progression for a pressurized water reactor (PWR) SFP, a computational model was established by using the Modular Accident Analysis Program (MAAP5). Important factors such as Zr oxidation by air, air natural circulation and thermal radiation were considered for partial and complete drainage accidents without mitigation measures. The calculation indicated that even if the residual water level was in the active fuel region, there was a chance to effectively remove the decay heat through axial heat conduction (if the pool cooling system failed) or steam cooling (if the pool cooling system was working). For sensitivity study, the effects of emergency ventilation and water injection on the accident progression were analyzed. The analysis showed that for the current configuration of high-density storage racks, it was difficult to cool the spent fuels by air natural circulation. Enlarging the space between the adjacent assemblies was a way of increasing air natural circulation flow rate and maintaining the coolability of SFP. Water injection to the bottom of the SFP helped to recover water inventory, quenching the high temperature assemblies to prevent melting, and even the molten corium pool to avoid molten-corium-concrete-interaction (MCCI).

Cs2Hx+1PMo12−xVxO40 (x = 0–3) catalysts were prepared, characterized and tested for the selective oxidation of methacrolein to methacrylic acid to investigate the effect of vanadium on the physicochemical properties and catalytic behavior of the catalysts. The catalysts before and after reaction were characterized by N2 physisorption, FT-IR, XRD, XPS, NH3-TPD and H2-TPR. The characterization results show that the structural symmetry of the catalysts with vanadium substituting for Mo is reduced, and the acidity and the redox abilities of the catalysts vary with the amounts of vanadium. For the oxidation of methacrolein to methacrylic acid, the optimized acidity is beneficial for the selectivity to methacrylic acid, and high surface area and reducibility of the V atoms can enhance the activity of the catalysts. The best catalytic performance is obtained on Cs2H2PMo11VO40, and excessive amounts of vanadium (x = 2, 3) are detrimental to the activity and selectivity of the catalysts. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

This paper provides a comprehensive analysis on cooling tower fouling data taken from seven 15.54 mm I.D. helically ribbed, copper tubes and a plain tube at Re = 16000. There are two key processes during fouling formation： fouling deposition and fouling removal, which can be determined by mass transfer and fluid friction respectively. The mass transfer coefficient can be calculated through three analogies： Prandtl analogy, VonKarman analogy, and Chilton-Colburn analogy. Based on our analyses, Von-Karman analogy is the optimized analogy, which can well predict the formation of cooling tower fouling. Series of semi-theoretical fouling correlations as a function of the product of area indexes and efficiency indexes were developed, which can be applicable to different internally ribbed geometries. The correlations can be directly used to assess the fouling ootential of enhanced tubes in actual coolinu tower water situations.

As a new type of ignition technique, laser induced spark ignition can be widely used in the ignition system of internal combustion engines and aero-engines. In this paper, laser induced oxygen spark evolution has been numerically studied with a two-dimensional, unsteady, multi-components and time-accurate model under different ambient temperatures and pressures. The chemical kinetics between species has been considered. A commercial software Fluent is used to solve the problem. Results show that both ambient conditions have great effect on the maximum temperature and maximum pressure of oxygen spark initially, but the effect decreases with time going on. The maximum velocity and maximum electron number density are also prominently influenced by ambient conditions. For the relationship between shock wave radius and time, ambient temperature plays an important role while ambient pressure is insignificant. These results above will be the foundation for the applications of laser induced spark ignition in the future.
