A two-phase flow, non-isothermal, three dimensional model was developed to study the transport phenomena in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Modeling results of water distribution and temperature distribution are presented in this paper. The modeling results show that water and temperature distributions are non-uniform. Along the flow direction, water concentration in anode is decreasing while that in cathode is increasing which liquid water present in cathode;in the cross section perpendicular to the flow direction, both water concentration and liquid water saturation under the shoulder are higher than that under the channel;liquid water distribution across cathode GDL is different at different discharging voltages. Local temperature is decreasing along the flow direction, with even higher gradient when the reactant gas is insufficient;temperatures under the shoulder are lower than those under the channel;in the direction across MEA, the highest temperature is in cathode catalyst layer, and temperature gradient increases as the discharging voltage decreases;at the same discharging voltage, the thicker the PEM is, the lower the local temperatures and the temperature gradient across MEA are.

The slug length and the trailing Taylor bubble velocity in an upward vertical slug flow were measured by using the optical probes and the EKTAPRO 1000 high speed motion analyzer. The correlation between the trailing bubble velocity and the length of liquid slug ahead of that bubble is derived from the experimental data. Based on this correlation as well as the bubble overtaking mechanism, a model for the slug length distribution at any designated locations along the pipe is proposed. The predicted results are in agreement with the experimental data.

The explicit compact difference scheme, proposed in Three-point explicit compact difference scheme with arbitrary order of accuracy and its application in CFD by Lin et al., published in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (English Edition), 2007, 28(7), 943-953, has the same performance as the conventional finite difference schemes. It is just another expression of the conventional finite difference schemes. The proposed expression does not have the advantages of a compact difference scheme. Nonetheless, we can more easily obtain and implement compared with the conventional expression in which the coefficients can only be obtained by solving equations, especially for higher accurate schemes.

The dust emission models to date cannot describe the relation between the transport rate of different sized grains and their grain size composition in soil surface, so Aeolian grain transport on a soil-like bed composed of fine sand and silt powder was measured in a wind tunnel. Six types of soil-like beds with different silt fractions have been tested in this experiment. The mass flux profiles of silt dust and sand grains are much different due to their different motion modes. Analysis of the vertical distribution of the powder and sand grains reveals that for a given soil bed, the ratio of the horizontal dust flux to the horizontal sand flux is directly proportional to their mass ratio in the bed. The dust flux is closely linked to the sand flux by the bombardment mechanism. For a given wind velocity and grain size of the bed, the slopes of the vertical mass flux profiles of sand grains larger than 100 μm are nearly equal in a log-linear plot and the ratio between the fraction of transport rate of each size group to the whole transport rate and the mass fraction of each size group in the bed is a constant only dependent on grain size. With this law, the transport rate of dust and different sized grains can be related with the grain size composition in the soil surface.
