Experimental study of n-decane decomposition with microsecond pulsed discharge plasma

A highly-integrated experimental system for the plasma decomposition of fuels was *** were conducted in a flow reactor at atmospheric pressure and confirmed that n-decane could be cracked by large-gap dielectric barrier discharge under the excitation of a microsecond-pulse power supply. Alkanes and olefins with a C atom number that is smaller than10 as well as hydrogen were found in the cracked products of n-decane（n-C10 H22）. The combination of preheating and plasma decomposition had strong selectivity for olefins. Under strong discharge conditions, small molecule olefins were found in the products. Moreover, there was a general tendency that small molecule olefins gradually accounted for higher percentage of products at higher temperature and discharge frequency.

The heat transfer enhancement of Longitudinal Vortex (LV) is a kind of technology with efficiency is high and resistance is low. The effective influence distance of LV is very important to extend this kind of technology in narrow rectangular channels under water medium. CFX10.0 is used to simulate this question, and three velocity components of water flow have been used to define the strength of LV. The results of this calculate method are compared with the experimental results of thermal infrared imager and phase doppler particle analyzer, and they are reasonable. In this paper range, the effective influence distance of LV is bigger than 33 times of Longitudinal Vortex Generators (LVGs) height. © 2011 IEEE.

To increase the contribution to the regional environment, the feasibility of blending agricultural residues was explored by a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) generator unit using coal gangue as the single fuel. In this study, straw powder was chosen to blend into the coal gangue, and the whole thermal system was built as a dynamic model based on self-programming and GSE software. Blending affects the load-increasing process from 75 % to 100 % rated power (Pe) with a load variation rate of 1 % Pe/min. With the blended fuel, the deviation of the output power was almost unchanged, and the maximum deviation of the live steam pressure was reduced by 0.04 MPa. With the blending ratios of 10 % and 20 %, the energy efficiencies of the whole unit were improved by 0.48% and 0.81%, respectively, the accumulative deviations of live steam temperature were reduced by 10.4% and 16.5%, respectively, the accumulative deviations of reheat steam temperature were reduced by 13.3% and 18.2% respectively, and the maximum deviations of bed temperature were increased to 8.9 ℃ and 9.5 ℃ respectively. The increased fluctuations in bed temperature are still far from the safe boundary, so the CFB generator unit can safely load up with the blending ratios of 10 % and 20 %. Copyright © 2024 by ASME.

Gasification of high moisture content biomass in supercritical water has been identified as a promising alternative system for producing renewable hydrogen. Supercritical water partial oxidation is the process by which an oxidant appears during the reaction. The key advantage of this process is the rapid heating of the gasification medium, resulting in less char formation and improved hydrogen yield. Many researchers have studied the supercritical water gasification of model compounds. However, real biomass which is of importance for large production of hydrogen has yet to be thoroughly examined. In this paper, gasification of high moisture content municipal sludge was studied in a continuous reactor employing hydrogen peroxide as an oxygen source. The reaction was tested across temperatures and pressures in the range of 673 to 873 K and 24 to 30 MPa, and across various residence times ranging from 3 to 15 minutes. We found that sludge at low concentrations can be completely gasified with no observable char or tar formation. The improvement of gasification efficiency by partial oxidation was accompanied with a high yield of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Through this, we evaluated the energy efficiency of sludge gasification. Our thermodynamic calculations show that the energy efficiency reaches 50% when considering hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane as the valuable gases in the ideal case. Taking into account the energy recovery from the hot water at 30 MPa and 873 K and assuming the ideal scenario of no external heat loss, the overall energy yield potentially reaches 85%. Our results show that the key mechanism of the gasification process is energy recovery, as the chemical reaction is endothermic and requires high temperatures.

Rice husk, a type of biomass fuel, is rich in amorphous silica. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a fast-responding non-contact detection method which can realize on-line detection of rice ash components. This paper aims to explore the optimum working conditions of LIBS and extend the compatibility of LIBS technology. The paper uses the sample motion state simulation system to simulate ash, so that the particles can be laser-induced breakdown during the vertical drop and horizontal motion, and then the effect of particle flow state on the stability of the LIBS detection signal can be determined. In addition, the paper compares the effects of two laser pulse widths on the stability of LIBS detection signal by using a 1 ns pulse width laser and a 6 ns pulse width laser to improve the detection error. Experimental studies have found that long pulse width laser provides better stability of spectrum, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the detection result is smaller than that of short pulse width laser, and the RSD is smaller in the state of horizontally transferring samples, which can obtain the spectral signal with stronger line intensity. Moreover, sample in conveyor, by contrast, leads to more stable signals. © ICOPE 2019 - 7th International Conference on power engineering, Proceedings. All rights reserved.

The scroll expander used in organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system is improved, and its performance is analyzed experimentally. The modified profile and inlet hole of the scroll expander are enhanced, and the performance of the scroll expander before and after the improvement is analyzed. The results show that when the inlet pressure exceeds 0.7 MPa, the waist-shaped hole with a larger area is preferable. The scroll expander with a waist-shaped hole has a larger output power and wider optimal pressure range, and when the inlet pressure is 1.6 MPa, the maximum output power increases by 230 W. The output power and isentropic efficiency of the scroll expander can be improved by modifying the profile. When the inlet pressure is 1.6 MPa and the rotational speed is 1750 r/min, the maximum output power of the scroll expander is 1235 W, which is 120 W higher than that before the improvement. © 2020, Tech Science Press. In this study,the flow pattern and bubble behavior of R1233zd(E)during subcooled flow boiling in parallel channels are experimentally investigated with visualization and thermal *** test section is composed of 21 rectangular mini channels with the hydraulic diameter of 1.5 mm and the length of 140 *** flow,slug flow,churn flow and wavy-annular flow occur in sequence with the increase of vapor quality,while transient flow pattern transition process involving multiple flow patterns are also *** distribution of flow pattern is non-synchronized and axial-asymmetric,with earlier flow pattern transitions observed in peripheral channels away from the center *** initial nucleate site in each channel also show a random and axial-asymmetric distribution,while faster bubble growth can be noted in some channel under the comprehensive effects of liquid evaporation and bubble *** variation of heat transfer coefficient is correspondence to the flow pattern transition,showing different trends along the flow *** increase of mass flux can lead to delayed flow pattern transition and variation of heat transfer *** addition,higher heat transfer coefficient can be noted in channels away from the center axis.

Prediction of dryout point was experimentally investigated with deionized water upflowing through narrow annular channel with 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm gap respectively. The annular with narrow gap was bilaterally heated by AC current power supply. The experimental conditions covered a range of pressure from 0.8 to 3.5 MPa, mass flux of 60.39 to 135.6 kg/m2 and heat flux of 5 to 50 kW/m2 This paper presents a new analytical model for the prediction of dryout point for steam- water flow in narrow annular gap and bilaterally and uniformly heated tubes. The prediction of dryout point for bilaterally heated annuli was based on the droplet-diffusion model for internally heated annuli by Kirillov and Smogalev (1969, 1972). The dryout model prediction values are compared with a experimental data, showing a good agreement in accuracy for the above mentioned parametric range.

Hydrogen production by biomass gasification in supercriticor subcritical water with Raney-Ni and other catalysts

Gasification of peanut shell, sawdust and straw in supercritical or subcritical water has been studied in a batch reactor with the presence of a series of Raney-Ni and its mixture with ZnCl2 or Ca(OH)2. The main gas products were hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, and a small amount of carbon monoxide. Different types of Raney-Ni, containing different metal components such as Fe, Mo or Cr, have different influences on the gasification yield and hydrogen selectivity. The catalysis effect can be improved obviously by adding ZnCl2 or Ca(OH)2 Increasing the reaction temperature or adding ZnCl2 and Ca(OH)2 could improve the mass of H2 in gas products and reduce the mass of CH4 and CO2 at the same time. The possible mechanism is that ZnCl2 can decompose the biomass particle by accelerating cellulose hydrolyzation in high-temperature water, increasing more specific surface to admit catalysts, while Ca(OH)2 can absorb CO2 to produce CaCO3 deposit, which can drop out from the reactant system, and which will drive the reaction to get more hydrogen. With respect to the biomass conversion to gas product and selectivity of H2 at low temperature, the series of Raney-Ni has shown many advantages over other catalysts; thus, this kind of catalyst has great potential to be utilized in the hydrogen industry for the gasification of biomass.
