This paper presents some initial results on the separate effects of shear and compositional inhomogeneities on the global structure of turbulent lean piloted premixed flames. Shear is introduced by injecting the mixture in two streams through two concentric tubes at different velocities. Compositional inhomogeneity, for the same shear rate, is obtained by injecting air in the annulus and fuel or rich fuel-air mixtures through the inner jet which may be recessed upstream of the jet exit plane. It is found that increasing the shear inhomogeneity can lead to a shorter flame where the tip may transition from "open" to "closed". The latter refers to a "Bunsen-like" flame while an "open" flame has reacting edges that do not close at the tip. Compositional inhomogeneity seems to have little effects on the global structure despite the presence of mixture fraction gradients a noted from Rayleigh scattering performed the jet exit plane. Measurements of velocity fields and imaging of reaction zones will be performed to enable a better understanding of the structure of these flames and to locate them on the premixed flames regime diagram. © 2018 Combustion Institute. Optimization of the fuel rod＇s arrangement cooled by turbulentnanofluids flow in pressurized water reactor (PWR)

In this paper, response surface methodology(RSM) based on central composite design(CCD) is applied to obtain an optimization design for the fuel rod's diameter and distance cooled by turbulent Al_2O_3–water nanofluid for a typical pressurized water reactor(PWR). Fuel rods and nanofluid flow between them are simulated 3D using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) by ANSYS-FLUNET package software. The RNG k–ε model is used to simulate turbulent nanofluid flow between the rods. The effect of different nanoparticles concentration is also investigated on the Nusselt number from heat transfer efficiency view point. Results reveal that when distance parameter(a) is in the minimum level and diameter parameter(r) is in the maximum possible level, cooling the rods will be better due to higher Nusselt number in this situation. Also, using the different nanoparticles on the cooling process confirms that Al_2O_3 averagely 17% and TiO_2 10% improve the Nusselt numbers.

A new structure of installing guide vane inside eccentric vortex finder of cyclone was proposed. Five parameters including eccentric ratio e, blade number Z, hub inlet installing angle p, middle coefficient of hub installing angle k, shroud inlet installing angle increment Ap were selected to design an orthogonal table of five elements and four levels. Based on RNG k-e model, separation efficiencies of the conventional cyclone and 16 cyclones installing guide vanes inside vortex finder were calculated. By means of orthogonal analysis, the influence of each element has been ranked, and the optimal level of each element has been combined as the optimal structure. The simulation result indicated that the separation efficiency of the optimal structure has increased up to 7.04% while the pressure drop decreased no more than 12.5%. The flow field analysis showed the velocity in the inner vortex of cyclone was lower, while it was higher in the outer vortex, which is of great help for particle separation.

To investigate Counter-Current Flow (CCF) characteristics in the Pressurizer Surge Line (PZR SL) assembly of the large advanced passive nuclear reactors, steam-water CCF experiments are carried out on a stainless steel test section, which is a 1:4 scaled-down model of the AP1000 PZR SL assembly. The inner diameter of the test PZR SL pipe is 90 mm, which also belongs to the large-diameter pipes, as same as the prototype PZR SL pipe, in the field of Counter-Current Flow Limitation (CCFL) researches. The present steam-water CCFL experiments are conducted under normal pressure and saturated temperature, with the PZR simulator collapse water level ranging from 350 to 900 mm. CCFL becomes severer at higher steam flow rate, and the most limiting CCFL effect locates between the PZR simulator bottom head and the vertical part of PZR SL pipe. The onset of CCFL and zero liquid penetration (ZP) are two critical conditions in the CCF development process, dividing the process into three stages: Before-CCFL, Partial-CCFL, and CCFL-ZP. According to the local CCFL conditions, the development of the CCFL process is also divided into four-regions since onset of CCFL. The present steam-water CCF data are well normalized in terms of dimensionless Kutateladze (Ku) numbers, and a Ku-type empirical partial CCFL correlation is developed. The comparisons of the present CCF data and partial CCFL correlation with the CCF data and correlations of former experiment researches validate that the present empirical partial CCFL correlation is conservative to predict steam-water partial CCFL in the prototype PZR SL assembly of the large advanced passive nuclear reactors.

Laminar flame characteristics of the blends of acetylene and methanol were numerically studied at 0.1 MPa and 363 K. A model was adopted to do the simulations with the accuracy validated with published laminar flame speeds data of methanol and acetylene. Simulation results showed that the methanol addition into acetylene leads to the significant increase of laminar flame speed with the equivalence ratio corresponding the maximum value shifting to the rich side. The reasons behind were analyzed and found the thermal and chemical kinetic effects both contribute the laminar flame speed variation while the contribution of the diffusion effect can be ignored. Besides, the equivalence ratio shift is found to be closely related to the adiabatic temperature and OH concentrations.

An experimental study on flash evaporation process in static flash evaporation of aqueous NaCl solution was presented. Experiments were carried out with initial concentration of waterfilm varied from 0 to 0.15, initial height from 0.1 to 0.4 m, and superheat from 1.8 to 49.5 K. Instant superheat was the driving force during flash evaporation. A negative correlation was found between temperature drop rate and instant superheat. Instant heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of instant superheat. A peak value of instant superheat existed during static flash. The evolution of instant superheat was affected by initial superheat, or initial height, or initial concentration of waterfilm.

Flame speeds of all hydrocarbon fuels are very sensitive to the reactions of formaldehyde (CH2O) and formyl radical (HCO). In this paper, we studied the prompt dissociation effect of HCO on the flame speeds of trioxane and formaldehyde up to 9 atm. The effects of prompt HCO dissociation were examined at high pressure. Different kinetic models were compared against the experimental results. The results showed there was a significant effect of the HCO prompt reaction on the flame speed in a broad range of pressure and equivalence ratio. At higher pressure, it was observed that the prompt effect was reduced due to the third-body collision effect. However, with the increase of O2mole fraction, the prompt effect was enhanced. Comparison showed that HP Mech with the inclusion of the prompt reactions had a better prediction at lean and ultra-lean conditions than other mechanisms. The improved prediction of the flame speed indicated that the prompt effect needed to be considered in the model development of hydrocarbon and oxygenated fuel combustion. © 2017 by Hao Zhao, Jiapeng Fu, and Yiguang Ju.

Sand particle lift-off velocity measurements and numerical simulation of mass flux distributions in a wind tunnel

Lift-off velocity of saltating sand particles in wind-blown sand located at 1.0 mm above the sand bed surface was measured using a phase Doppler particle analyzer in a wind tunnel. The results show that the probability distribution of lift-off velocity can be expressed as a lognormal function, while that of lift-off angle follows an exponential function. The probability distribution of lift-off angle conditioned for each lift-off velocity also follows an exponential function, with a slope that becomes steeper with increasing lift-off velocity. This implies that the probability distribution of lift-off velocity is strongly dependent on the lift-off angle. However, these lift-off parameters are generally treated as an independent joint probability distribution in the literature. Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the effects of conditional versus independent joint probability distributions on the vertical sand mass flux distribution. The simulation results derived from the conditional joint probability distribution agree much better with experimental data than those from the independent ones. Thus, it is better to describe the lift-off velocity of saltating sand particles using the conditional joint probability distribution. These results improve our understanding of saltation processes in wind-blown sand.

Experimental Study on Cohesiveness Characteristics of Raw Cement Ash at Moderate Temperature

Raw cement ash deposition in SP boilers gives rise to serious operation problems. In the present, mechanism of raw cement ash deposition is still unclear because the ash components, gas atmosphere and gas temperature are quite different from existing studies. The characteristics of cohesiveness of raw cement ash in moderate temperature were investigated in a lab-scale electric furnace. Three typical raw cement ashes were selected as samples, three base plates, including rough steel plate, smooth steel plate, organic glass plate were studied. Ball-impacting method was adopted to evaluate the cohesiveness of ash. Experimental results show that, the ash cohesiveness is mainly dependent on the components of ash, and the material property of base plate, while it exhibits little relationship with the roughness of the plate surface. Low-melting substances appear during ash deposition on steel plate. The results reveal that ferrum possibly has catalytic to some low-melting substances forming.
