In practical power markets, Available Transfer Capability (ATC) is crucial for transmission customers, system operators and power marketers to make a good choice. It is an indication of the expected transfer capability remaining on the transmission network. In order to assure the secure, economic, stable and reliable operation of power systems, the assessment of ATC should be carried out instantly. Most of the existing ATC calculation are mainly focused on AC power systems and based on deterministic techniques. As high performance computing has been extensively used in scientific computation and technology, less work has been done on evaluation of ATC by using parallel algorithm. This paper is dealing with the evaluation of ATC by stochastic parallel algorithm in an AC power system. Due to the stochastic nature of power system behaviors, it is important to assess ATC from a statistical and risk analysis point of view. Considering the dynamics, time-varying and uncertainties of power systems, several statistical indices is presented to evaluate ATC. They are calculated based on Monte Carlo simulation and parallel computing. The system operation states can be simulated by Monte Carlo method, and the parallel algorithm based on MATpower (A MATLAB™ power system Simulation Package) is developed. Case study with an IEEE 30-bus power system is used to verify the presented approach. Five-number summary and other statistical indices of ATC are calculated. The results show that the proposed method can elapse shorter computation time and it is more effective and practical. Some new attractive issues are suggested at the end. © 2010 IEEE.

Available transfer capability (ATC) is defined as a measure of the system's capability for transfers of power for further commercial activity, over and above already committed uses. In practical power markets, ATC can provide important information for transmission customers, system operators and power marketers. The assessment of ATC should be carried out to assure the secure, economic, stable and reliable operation of power systems. Most of the existing ATC calculation are mainly focused on AC power system and based on deterministic techniques. As high voltage direct current (HVDC) power distribution systems have been extensively used in modem transmission network, less work has been done on evaluation of ATC in AC-DC hybrid power system. This paper is dealing with the evaluation of ATC for the integration of HVDC link with an AC power system. The mathematical model of ATC for AC-DC hybrid power system is proposed. Due to the stochastic nature of power system behaviors, it is important to assess ATC from a statistical and risk analysis point of view. Considering the dynamics, time-varying and uncertainties of hybrid power systems, several statistical indices are presented to evaluate ATC and they are calculated based on Monte Carlo simulation. states of system operation can be simulated, and the algorithm based on MATpower (A MATLAB™ power system Simulation Package) is developed in the environment of MATLAB 7.5. Case study with a modified IEEE 30-bus AC-DC hybrid power system is used to verify the presented approach. Sequential solution method is employed to deal with the AC-DC power flow. Fivenumber summary and other statistical indices of ATC are calculated. The results show that the proposed method is effective and practical. The research achievements are undergoing to transfer to the application in other hybrid power systems with different control style, and some new problems are suggested at the end of paper. © 2010 IEEE.

As an important component of a wind turbine drive chain, the high failure rate of the gearbox can have a serious impact on the operation of wind turbine units. The fault diagnosis of the gearbox is therefore important for the safety of wind turbine units. In this paper, a gearbox experiment rig was built, experiments on the gear surface spalling fault were held on the rig under laboratory conditions, the shaft vibration displacement signals were collected, related vibration signals were analyzed by time domain, amplitude domain, frequency domain and wavelet analysis, and the results of different analysis methods were compared. The results show that the waveform of normal and fault signals are similar, the amplitude of the signals will change while the fault happens, and the wavelet analysis is more effective than frequency domain analysis on gearbox fault features extraction.

The vibration signals of wind turbines are highly nonlinear and non-stationary due to wind turbine operation conditions that are very complicated. The signals will be more complex when a fault occurs. Aiming at these problems, a fault diagnosis method for direct-drive wind turbine is presented based on back propagation neural network (BPNN). The time-domain feature parameters of vibration signals in the horizontal and vertical direction are considered in the method. Five experiments of direct-drive wind turbine with normal, wind wheel mass imbalance, wind wheel aerodynamic imbalance, yaw and blade break are carried out in laboratory scale. Through analyzing the features of five conditions, the time-domain feature parameters in horizontal and vertical direction of the vibration signal are selected as the input samples of BPNN. By training, the BPNN model can be constructed between feature parameters and fault types. The validity of the BPNN model is verified using test samples. The results indicate that the proposed method has higher diagnostic accuracy. It can used in on-line fault diagnosis of direct-drive wind turbines.

The hybrid excitation permanent magnet machine (HEPMM) combines two kinds of excitation: permanent magnet (PM) and electrical excitation, so it possesses the advantages of PM machines and overcomes the incapability of regulating the excitation field. By now many HEPMM schemes have been presented. In this paper the operation principle, structure, advantages and disadvantages of these HEPMMs have been reviewed and compared in detail. These HEPMMs are classified into three types by new classification method - placement of PM and iron poles. At last novel harmonic excitation HEPMM is proposed and discussed.

According to the characteristics of the cascading failures in power grid, a lot of assessment methods based on the probability theory have been proposed in recent years. However, most of them ignore the influence of the changing operating conditions on the power system planning and operation. This paper assesses the risk of the cascading failure in the power system based on the operational reliability theory which considering the variation of operating states and environment of the power system. The operational reliability of the power system is calculated based on Markov Process which describes the transient probability of states. The key conception of this theory is that the failure rate and the probability of components are changing along with the life of the equipment, the operating states and the environment conditions. A new evaluation procedure is brought up to calculate the operational reliability indices which can provide the specific information of the cascading failure. The evaluating results of the test system confirm that this approach is applicable to analyze the cascading failures in real power system.

This paper proposes a systematic gain setting method for the positive feedback anti-islanding scheme which is designed to protect the interconnected inverter-based distributed generators (DGs) from islanding operation. Two main factors affecting the performance of the anti-islanding scheme are investigated when the positive feedback gain is tuned. One is the stability impact of the anti-islanding control on distributed generation (DG) systems and the other is the islanding detection time of the anti-islanding scheme. The small-signal model and the electromagnetic transient simulation model of an inverter-based DG system are developed to facilitate the realization of the proposed gain setting method. This method provides a practical and reliable tool for DG planning engineers.

PEEC model of DC bus is an accurate and effective way to analyze the transient process and EMI characteristic of converters. However, the PEEC model with normal partition method is very complicated. It is necessary to construct a brief and legible model. This paper proposes the partition rules and constructs the simple model of the DC bus in an H-bridge unit. Transient process analysis and two-port network analysis proved the simple model provides reasonable accuracy.

Using advanced computer information technology and power system, Real-time Environment Protecting Supervision and control system (REPSCS) of heavy loads in the Inner Mongolia Electric power Grid is studied. REPSCS can monitor the operation of the heavy load companies' main equipment and environmental protection electrical equipment. The operation data of those key equipment are collected, processed, transferred and applied, and the above features are integrated into an on-line monitoring and information management system to complete. At the same time, through the latch linkage between the main equipment and the key environmental protection equipment, we achieve the enterprise's environmental monitoring and control. The system is aimed at the practical needs of China's provinces and cities area design, system technology maturity and reliability of industrial applications have been tested in a very wide range of applications. As China's environment protection and energy facilities, environmental monitoring and penalties continue to increase; real-time monitoring system for the environmental protection facilities of the high load companies will be the first choice. Its market demand is very apparent and urgent. Therefore, this project is environmentally friendly energy saving, and it can promote scientific and technological progress and improve the operation and management level.

A systematical approach that can synthesize system contingencies into probabilistic PSS design is developed. A critical contingency screening is first conducted by a ranking of contingencies according to a probabilistic small signal stability index. A multi-objective optimization model is formulated to seek satisfactory system damping performance under both pre-contingency and post-contingency situations. A recursive Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is then used to solve the optimization model. Performance of the proposed model and solution is tested and investigated on an eight-machine system and The potential and superiority of the proposed method over other two intelligence computation methods is reported.
