With the increasing level of informatization and interconnection in the electric power system, the risk of external attacks on power systems is increasing. In response to the drawbacks of traditional static security assessment methods, this paper establishes two security metrics, which are voltage and power flow amplitude deviation security metric and power flow entropy security metric. Based on these security metrics, a dynamic security evaluation model that considers cascading failure is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed security metrics can effectively reflect the security of cascading failure propagation, thereby providing valuable insights for decision-making by power system operators. © 2023 IEEE.

The forecasting of of pseudo-measurements play an important role in distribution system state estimation (DSSE). This paper proposes robust DSSE method based on forecasting-aided graphical learning method. The nodal power consumption models are first built to produce pseudo-measurements based on deep neural network. Then, the pseudo-measurements and real-time measurements are represented as a graph according to the topology of the distribution network, which are further processed by a graph attention network to capture the mapping relationship between the graphical measurements and the state variables based on the error modeling of pseudo-measurements. The robustness against anomalous measurements is achieved through the embedding of structural information of DN. The modeling of pseudo-measurements further enhance its robustness by guiding the formulation of edge weights of the graph neural network. Comparative tests are carried out on a IEEE 119-node system to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. © 2024, state Grid Electric power.

To protect the environment and lower carbon dioxide emissions, conventional fossil-fuel generators tend to be replaced by renewable generation. The volatile and uncertain renewable generation, as well as the reduced proportion of conventional fossil-fuel generators, causes challenges for power systems in terms of peak shaving. The equipment of energy storage is an important solution for the challenges. This paper proposes a distributionally robust method that coordinatedly plans renewable generation, transmission, and energy storage, minimizing the sum of investment and operation costs including carbon taxes. The operation cost is the optimal value of an operation optimization problem. Wasserstein-metric-based ambiguity set is established to deal with the possible inexactness of the empirical distribution of renewable generation and load uncertainties, based on which the worst-case expectation of operation cost is formulated. By calculating the Lipschitz constant of the operation cost function, the planning model comes down to mixed-integer linear programming. The case study in the IEEE 30-bus system demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2022 Owner/Author.

Microscopic characteristics of SF6partial discharge induced by a floating linear metal particle

Direct current (DC) gas insulated transmission lines (GILs) have been widely used in power transmission, but might be threatened by partial discharge due to the presence of floating impurities (e.g., dust and metal particles) inside the sealed chamber. In this letter, by using a 2D fluid model we characterize the microscopic properties of the partial discharge induced by a floating linear metal particle in SF6(both the discharge propagation and interaction between space charge and metal particle) under negative high voltage direct current (HVDC) conditions. Due to the strong electronegativity of SF6, the spatiotemporal distributions of the charged species (electrons, positive and negative ions), space charge, and reduced electric field are rather different from those in air. Notably, a negative ion region is observed around the top tip of the metal particle, and it plays an important role in the generation and propagation of primary and secondary streamers in SF6, which may lead to severe motion characteristics of the particle and aliasing of partial discharge signals. Additionally, we analyze the charging process and electric force reversal phenomenon, which may provide a more precise understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the firefly motion previously reported for DC GILs. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based adaptive sparsity promoting wide-area damping controller for power system. Different from traditional fixed wide-area control structure, the proposed method employs DRL algorithm to identify the optimal sparsity promoting control structure and obtain corresponding parameter settings under different operating conditions considering the time-delay and packet drop. Simulation are carried out on 10-machine 39-bus system to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2023 IEEE.

Modeling Fault Recovery and Transient Stability of Grid-Forming Converters Equipped With Current Reference Limitation

When grid-forming (GFM) inverter-based resources (IBRs) face severe grid disturbances (e.g., short-circuit faults), the current limitation mechanism may be triggered. Consequently, the GFM IBRs enter the current-saturation mode, inducing nonlinear dynamical behaviors and posing great challenges to the post-disturbance transient angle stability. This paper presents a systematic study to reveal the fault recovery behaviors of a GFM IBR and identify the risk of instability. A closed-form expression for the necessary condition that a GFM IBR returns from the current-saturation mode to the normal operation mode is presented. Based on these analyses, it is inferred that the angle of the magnitude-saturated current significantly affects the post-fault recovery and transient stability;with different angle selection, the system may follow multiple post-fault trajectories depending on those conditions: 1) Convergence to a normal stable equilibrium point (SEP), 2) convergence to a saturated stable equilibrium point (satSEP), or 3) divergence (instability). In this paper, the circumstances under which a GFM IBR cannot escape from the current-saturation mode are thoroughly investigated. The theoretical analyses are verified by dynamic simulations. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

High proportion of renewable energy brings great challenges to the stable operation of the distribution network. Distributed energy storage (DES), as an interactive Lithium-ion battery energy storage system, can effectively improve the grid connection and serve as a backup power source. Aiming at the DES system supporting the flexibility of distribution network, this paper proposes a new type of dynamic reconfigurable battery (DRBN) system and its efficient collaborative optimization control method with the power converter system, clarifies the operation control mechanism of the DRBN system of the CPS architecture, proposes a multi-objective optimization control strategy for the DRBN system based on the CPS architecture, and formulates a demonstration application and verification plan.

Asynchronous distributed charging protocol for plug-in electric vehicles

The proliferation of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) advocates a distributed paradigm for coordinating PEV charging. Unlike existing primal-dual decomposition or consensus methods, this paper proposes a cutting-plane-based distributed algorithm considering a peer-to-peer (P2P) communication network, which enables asynchronous coordination among PEVs. First, an equivalent surrogate model is established by exploiting the duality of the original optimization problem, which masks the private information of individual users by equivalent transformation. Then, a cutting-plane based algorithm is derived to solve the surrogate problem in a distributed manner with intrinsic superiority to cope with various asynchrony. Critical implementation issues, including distributed initialization, distributed cutting-plane generation, and localized stopping criteria, are discussed in detail. Numerical tests on IEEE 37- and 123-node feeders with actual data illustrate that the proposed method is resilient to several asynchronies and admits the plug-and-play operation mode. The proposed methodology is expected to provide an alternative path toward the robust protocol for PEV charging.
