Improving Auction Mechanisms for Online Real-Time Bidding Advertising with a Two-stage Resale Model

Real Time Bidding (RTB), widely publicized as one of the most promising big-data-driven business models for online computational advertising, has the potential of effectively monetizing user clicks and impressions via two-stage auctions with resale. Demand side platforms (DSPs) play a key role as intermediators in this auction process. Typically, the first-stage auctions will be conducted separately in each DSP to determine one winning advertiser registered on it, and in the second-stage auction, each DSP submits a bid based on its winning advertiser's bid to the ad exchange platform (AdX). The highest-bid DSP wins the ad impression from AdX and resells it to its winning advertiser in pursuit of the intermediate fee. This two-stage resale auction is a critical component in maintaining the effectiveness and efficiency of RTB ecosystems. In this paper, we strive to identify and design potential improvements for this auction mechanism with the aim of enhancing the total revenue of both advertisers and DSPs. We also validated our proposed auction mechanisms using the computational experiment approach. The experimental results indicate that our proposed mechanisms can make both advertisers and DSPs better off. Our work represents the first step towards a new research area of optimal mechanism design for RTB auctions, and is expected to provide useful managerial insights in RTB market practice. © 2017

The bonding strength between environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) and silicon carbide fiber reinforced silicon carbide (SiC/SiC) was improved by preparing microstructure on SiC/SiC surface with femtosecond laser. The processing morphologies with different parameters were compared. There was oxidation phenomenon at the edge of laser processing, and the degree of graphitization was increased. Without damage the internal fiber structure of SiC/SiC, reasonable processing parameters were selected, and microgroove structure was processed on the SiC/SiC surface using the femtosecond laser. The tension test results showed that, after the femtosecond laser machining , the bonding strength between EBCs and SiC/SiC could be improved by about 5.5%, and the time spent to reach the critical load was extended by 11.2%. The EBCs regularly adheres to the microgrooves formed by the femtosecond laser processing, while EBCs in the area without the laser processing was completely detached.

Traditional centralized energy systems have the disadvantages of difficult management and insufficient incentives. Blockchain is an emerging technology, which can be utilized in energy systems to enhance their management and control. Integrating token economy and blockchain technology, token economic systems in energy possess the characteristics of strong incentives and low cost, facilitating integrating renewable energy and demand side management, and providing guarantees for improving energy efficiency and reducing emission. This article describes the concept and functionality of token economics, and then analyzes the feasibility of applying token economics in the energy systems, and finally discuss the applications of token economics with an example in integrated energy systems. Wind power probabilistic forecasting is of great significance to the operation and dispatch of the power system. However, most researches have focused on how to predict wind power using local information rather than spatial correlation information of multiple wind farms in a region. In this paper a short-term wind power probabilistic forecasting approach considering spatial correlation is proposed. Originally, a set of explanatory variables highly correlated with the target variable is selected by calculating mutual information. Next, the principal component analysis can help to reconstruct the data and reduce the dimension of the explanatory variables. Finally, the conditional kernel density estimation is introduced to predict the short-term wind power of the target wind farm. Case studies on the dataset of Global Energy Forecasting Competition 2014 verify that the proposed approach can achieve better performance than traditional approach. © 2017 IEEE.

The growing penetration of the distributed generation (DG) makes the traditional passive distribution network change to active distribution network. A new fault location method is proposed in this paper based on the change of the current phase, which can be used in active distribution network. Specifically, a fault model of the invert DG is proposed, then the active distribution network model is established. The current phase difference between the two ends of the distribution line are calculated for both the normal operation and fault conditions. The relationship between the current phase and the location of the fault is summarized. A fault location criterion is proposed based on the change of the current phase difference. The correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified using the practically measured data and the fault simulation. © 2017 IEEE.

With the construction of global energy interconnection, plenty of fluctuating renewable energy access the distribution network, power system dynamic behavior is more complex. The wide-area measurement system light (WAMS Light) records the actual variation of the grid in the distribution network with high accuracy. Exploring the value of high-density, large-scale synchronous data and comprehensive visualization can efficiently reflect the behavior of the system. An open and interactive WAMS Light data visualization platform (WAMSLVP) is built with three-tier structure. WAMSLVP is designed by analysing the function requirements in multi-information fusion, multi-angle analysis, multi-layer integration, program flexible access based on the characteristics of distribution network. And WAMSLVP integrates the frequency, voltage magnitude, angle phase and other power information with the non-power information as multiple layers to compositive display based on geographic information system (GIS), facilitating the dispatchers simultaneously capture multiple information from different analysis just by a glance. © 2017 IEEE.

With the large-scale integration of volatile wind power generations, power system operation and planning face the problem of increasing injection fluctuations and uncertainties. In this paper, chance constraint expressions are used to characterize the wind power uncertainty, and then a new chance-constrained programming model for reference network with wind power integration is proposed to ensure the expected wind power utilization. In the proposed model, the objective function is minimizing total power generation cost and transmission investment cost, and the constraints are the safety operation technical requirements under intact operation state and the preconceived contingency operation state. The sample average approximation (SAA) method is used to develop a deterministic approach for the proposed model. Numerical analysis shows the potential benefit of the proposed model. © 2017 IEEE.

Kalman filter has been extensively applied in vast areas. However, the performance of Kalman filter rests on the accuracy of prior information such as model construction. In the integrated system of Strapdown Inertial Navigation system (SINS)/Global Positioning system (GPS), the model construction is affected by a certain error sources. The most significant one is computational errors, which are caused by improper reference frame and the absence of true values. To solve the problem, this paper presents a modified system model which reduce the impact of computational errors by selecting computational frame as reference coordinate frame and removing all true values. Simulation results have demonstrated that modified system model effectively improves the performance of Kalman filter in SINS/GPS integrated system.

Wind energy has become one of the most promising new energy sources in the context of the global energy interconnection. However, the inherent uncertainty of wind power and the volatility of its output make it difficult to join the internet for scheduling. The uncertainty of the output must be reduced or even eliminated by certain methods. In this paper, wind power and energy storage are coordinated to eliminate the uncertainty of wind power output, and to reduce the burden on the grid while ensuring the long-term operation of wind farms. This paper first introduces Q-learning in reinforcement learning as a controller. Through a large number of historical wind power data training, the controller has good decision-making ability, so as to reduce the punishment caused by wind power uncertainty; then the Q-learning is improved aiming at the maximum average income of the stage. Finally, the Q-value network is established with conventional Q-learning and improved Q-learning. The DQN algorithm in the deep reinforcement learning algorithm is introduced for deep training and decision-making and the three algorithms are verified. The result proves that the deep reinforcement learning algorithm can achieve better control effect than Q-learning.

Intersection detection is a critical capacity for an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) to drive safely in structured urban environment. Large-scale intersections stamped on maps have plenty of features for detection while some unmapped small-scale urban intersections are hard to be identified. In this paper, we propose a novel intersection detection method conducted on the basis of Hidden Markov Model (HMM). This method is based on the intersection scan model to obtain the traversable directions to classify the intersection. The scan model is effective in dealing with both LIDAR and visual data. Combination of the scan model and the HMM can accurately estimate the traversable directions in consideration of both real-time and historic data. Results from simulations and real-world experiments have shown the functionality of the presented approach.
