Delayed Response of Soil Moisture and Hydrological Droughts to Meteorological Drought Over East Asia

The frequency and severity of meteorological drought across Eastern Asia (EA) are observed and projected to increase with ongoing global climate change. However, the temporal and spatial responses of land surface elements including soil moisture and runoff to meteorological drought remain insufficiently understood and characterised, especially in terms of quantifying the differentiated lag time of soil moisture and hydrological drought responses. In this study, we investigate the spatiotemporal response of soil moisture and hydrological droughts to meteorological drought across EA, using the Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI;a measure of precipitation deficit), Standardised Soil Moisture Drought Index (SSMDI;quantifying soil moisture anomalies) and Standardised Streamflow Index (SSI;assessing streamflow deviations) at short- (1–3), medium- (6–9) and long-scales (12–24 months). The results show that in northern EA, soil moisture droughts indicate weak negative correlations with meteorological droughts at 1–6 month time scales, while in southern regions, stronger positive correlations are observed at 9–24 month time scales. Hydrological droughts exhibit consistently strong positive correlations with meteorological droughts across all time scales, especially in the southern regions of EA. Northern regions exhibit longer lag times of up to 8 months of soil moisture droughts in response to meteorological drought, whereas southern regions exhibit rapid responses (1 month). In all time scales, hydrological droughts in northern regions of EA have a delayed lag times extending up to 10 months. As climate change and land use changes may amplify drought impacts, long-term forecasting and adaptive management are essential to mitigate water shortages and ecological stress across the EA region. © 2025 Royal Meteorological Society.

Multimodal dialogue emotion recognition integrates data from multiple modalities to accurately identify emotional states in conversations. However, differences in expression and information density across modalities complicate the fusion of features. Traditional methods may introduce redundant information from other utterances, reducing the accuracy of emotion recognition. Existing one-hot labels often fail to capture the full range of emotional expressions, leading to biased results. To address these issues, we propose a model that fuses different modalities within the same utterance to avoid redundancy. It employs a progressive classification process, refining emotion recognition from coarse to fine granularity. Additionally, we use emotion polarity probabilities as weights for fine-grained classification and introduce a multimodal information-rich label that considers both the data and their interactions. Experiments on IEMOCAP and MELD datasets demonstrate the model’s effectiveness, significantly improving dialog emotion recognition accuracy. Our code is available at https://***/r/LOCG-188E.

Multimodal ultrasonic vibration(UV)assisted micro-forming has been widely investigated for its advan-tages of further reducing forming loads and improving forming ***,the influence mecha-nism of different UV modes on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties was still ***-timodal UV assisted micro-compression tests on T2 copper with different grains and sample sizes were conducted in this *** microstructure evolution for different UV modes was observed by *** results showed that the true stress reduction caused by UV was increased sequentially with tool ultrasonic vibration(TV),mold ultrasonic vibration(MV)and compound ultrasonic vibration(CV).The region of grain deformation was shifted along the direction of UV,and the MV promoted the uniform distribution of deformation *** grain refinement,fiber streamline density,grain deformation and rotation degree were further enhanced under CV,due to the synergistic effect of TV and ***,a coupled theoretical model considering both acoustic softening effect and size effect was proposed for describing the mechanical *** a physical model of dislocation motion in different UV modes was developed for describing the microstructure *** maximum error between the theoretical and experimental results was only 2.39％.This study provides a theoretical basis for the optimization of UV assisted micro-forming process.

With the rapid development of document digitization, people have become accustomed to capturing and processing documents using electronic devices such as smartphones. However, the captured document images often suffer from issues like shadows and noise due to environmental factors, which can affect their readability. To improve the quality of captured document images, researchers have proposed a series of models or frameworks and applied them in distinct scenarios such as image enhancement, and document information extraction. In this paper, we primarily focus on shadow removal methods and open-source datasets. We concentrate on recent advancements in this area, first organizing and analyzing nine available datasets. Then, the methods are categorized into conventional methods and neural network-based methods. Conventional methods use manually designed features and include shadow map-based approaches and illumination-based approaches. Neural network-based methods automatically generate features from data and are divided into single-stage approaches and multi-stage approaches. We detail representative algorithms and briefly describe some typical techniques. Finally, we analyze and discuss experimental results, identifying the limitations of datasets and methods. Future research directions are discussed, and nine suggestions for shadow removal from document images are proposed. To our knowledge, this is the first survey of shadow removal methods and related datasets from document images.

Robust privacy-preserving aggregation against poisoning attacks for secure distributed data fusion

Privacy-preserving data aggregation could be well applied in federated learning, enabling an aggregator to learn a specified fusion statistics over private data held by clients. Besides, robustness is a critical requirement in federated learning, since a malicious client is able to readily launch poisoning attacks by submitting artificial and malformed model updates to central server. To this end, we present a robust privacy-preserving data aggregation protocol based on distributed trust model, which achieves privacy protection by three-party computation based on replicated secret sharing with honest-majority. The protocol also achieves robustness by securely computing an input validation strategy called norm bounding, including ∞-norm and 2-norm bounding, which has been proven effective to defend against poisoning attacks. Following the best practice of hybrid protocol design, we exploit both Boolean sharing and arithmetic sharing to efficiently enforce ∞ and 2-norm bounding respectively. Additionally, we propose a novel share conversion protocol converting Boolean shares into arithmetic ones, which is of independent interest and could be used in other protocols. We provide security analysis of the protocol based on standard simulation paradigm and modular composition theorem, reaching the conclusion that presented protocol achieves secure aggregation functionality with norm bounding with computational security in the presence of one static semi-honest server. Comprehensive efficiency analysis and empirical experiments demonstrate its superiority compared with related protocols. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

A prediction method of distributed photovoltaic accommodation capability is proposed based on ridge regression. First, the factors influencing the distributed photovoltaic accommodation capacity are analyzed, and the concept of the contribution degree of distributed photovoltaic accommodation is introduced. The gray relation analysis method is used to evaluate the correlation between different factors and distributed photovoltaic accommodation, and a model of factors affecting distributed photovoltaic accommodation is constructed. Then, a prediction model of distributed photovoltaic accommodation capability is established based on ridge regression. The factors with high photovoltaic accommodation contribution degrees are incorporated in the prediction model. The mapping relationship between the driving factors of distributed photovoltaic accommodation and the prediction model is derived, then the development strategies for future photovoltaic accommodation capacity are formulated. Finally, simulation is performed on the SPSSPRO platform, and the results show that the proposed method can predict the distributed photovoltaic accommodation capability accurately and provide strategic suggestions for improving future photovoltaic accommodation capacity. © state Grid Electric Power 2025.

Multimodal sarcasm detection aims to identify whether utterances express sarcastic intentions contrary to their literal meaning based on multimodal information. However, existing methods fail to explore the model’s "ability to understand" the semantics expressed by sentences in the image context from semantic diversity perspectives. In this paper, we propose a multi-view semantic awareness method, which concretizes semantics from multiple perspectives to improve the model’s ability to capture different semantic features. Specifically, two learnable prefixes are attached to the text representation respectively to construct semantic representations from both the literal meaning and sarcastic intention perspectives. Then, image-text information is further fused through cross-attention to guide the semantic representation of different perspectives in the image context. Finally, the semantics expressed by prefixes are strengthened through KL divergence, thereby encouraging the model to capture two distinctive semantic features. Experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

We experimentally demonstrate the transmission of discrete multi-tone （DMT） millimeter-wave （mm-wave） signals over a 1.2-km distance at the D-band （110–170 GHz） in a cost-effective intensity-modulation and direct-detection （IM/DD） communication *** the experiment,we successfully achieve the transmission of DMT-QPSK and DMT-16QAM mm-wave signals over multiple-input multiple-output （MIMO） *** the 1.2-km free-space transmission,the bit error rate （BER）of the DMT-16QAM is below the 25%soft decision forward error correction （25%SD-FEC） threshold of 4×10-2,with a maximum net bit rate of 24.62 Gbit/s achieved in this system.

Throughput-optimal dynamic broadcasting is an essential cornerstone for the efficient operation of Multi-hop Wireless Networks (MWNs). Most existing algorithms for this problem were developed assuming static interference environments and network connectivity. However, wireless interference environments and network connectivity are inherently time-varying in real-world scenarios, primarily due to uncontrollable interference sources and unreliable links. Such time-varying characteristics make these existing algorithms less robust. In this paper, we study the robust throughput-optimal dynamic broadcasting for MWNs with multi-dimensional time-varying characteristics in terms of interference environments, network connectivity, and data arrival. We model the time-varying link existence states using a random process and characterize the time-varying interference environments through a dynamic variant of the classical Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR) model. In this variant, the SINR model parameters are dynamically adjusted over time by an adversary. Based on this, we first design a Robust Throughput-optimal Dynamic Broadcast (RTDB) algorithm which makes efficient slot-based max-weight link scheduling, power allocation, and data forwarding decisions in each time slot. We then prove its throughput-optimality in time-varying acyclic directed MWNs under the dynamic SINR model. The effectiveness of RTDB is validated via numerous simulations. © 2002-2012 IEEE.
