Design and demonstration of a next-generation air quality attainment assessment system for PM_(2.5)and O_3

Due to the increasingly stringent standards, it is important to assess whether the proposed emission reduction will result in ambient concentrations that meet the standards. The Software for Model Attainment Test-Community Edition （SMAT-CE） is developed for demonstrating attainment of air quality standards of O3 and PM2.5. SMAT-CE improves computational efficiency and provides a number of advanced visualization and analytical functionalities on an integrated GIS platform. SMAT-CE incorporates historical measurements of air quality parameters and simulated air pollutant concentrations under a number of emission inventory scenarios to project the level of compliance to air quality standards in a targeted future year. An application case study of the software based on the U.S. National Ambient Air Quality Standards （NAAQS） shows that SMAT-CE is capable of demonstrating the air quality attainment of annual PM2.5 and 8-hour O3 for a proposed emission control policy.

A New Coumarin-Based Fluorescent pH Probe

A new iminocoumarin-derived colorimetric and fluorescent pH probe was developed for rapid and sensitive detection of pH changes in biological and environmental media. With the decrease of pH value( from 6. 24 to 3. 00),an obvious color change of the probe in ethanol-water solution from green to yellow was observed under nature light. The intensity of the maximum fluorescence emission peak of the probe decreased gradually with the acidity increase of the solution. While the fluorescence intensity of the emission peak of the probe did not exhibit distinct change when pH was less than 11. 00 and the fluorescence was almost quenched at pH 13. 50. Sensitivity of the fluorescent pH probe was not interfered by the presence of common metal cations and anions.

PM2.5 and gaseous pollutants(SO2,HNO2,HNO3,HCl,and NH3) were simultaneously collected by Partisol- Model 2300 Sequential Speciation Sampler with denuder-filter pack system in the spring of 2013 in ***-soluble inorganic ions and gaseous pollutants were measured by Ion *** showed that the concentrations of NH3,NH+ 4and PM2.5 had similar diurnal variation trends and their concentrations were higher at night than in *** results of gas-to-particle conversion revealed that [NH3]:[NH+4] ratio was usually higher than 1; however,it was less than 1 and the concentration of NH+4 increased significantly during the haze episode,indicating that NH3 played an important role in the formation of fine *** on the sampling artifacts suggested that the volatilization loss of NH+4 was prevalent in the traditional single filter-based *** excess loss of HNO3 and HCl resulted from ammonium-poor aerosols and semivolatile inorganic species had severe losses in the clean day,whereas the mass of NH+ 4was usually overestimated during the single filter-based sampling due to the positive *** analysis was used to evaluate the influence of meteorological conditions on the volatilization loss of NH+*** was found that the average relative humidity and temperature had great effects on the loss of NH+*** loss of NH+4 was significantly under high temperature and low humidity,and tended to increase with the increasing of absorption of gaseous pollutants by *** total mass of volatile loss of NH+4,NO- 3and Cl- could not be ignored and its maximum value was 12.17 μg *** it is important to compensate sampling artifacts for semivolatile inorganic species.

Y73 is a progeny of asymmetric somatic hybridization between Oryza sativa *** and the wild rice species Oryza *** with a range of strains of Xanthomonas oryzae *** showed that Y73 had inherited a high level of resistance to rice bacterial blight(BB)from its wild *** F2 population of 7125 individuals was constructed from the cross between Y73 and a BB-susceptible cultivar *** testing 615 SSR and STS markers covering the 12 rice chromosomes,186 markers were selected that showed polymorphism between Y73 and *** markers linked to the BB resistance genes in Y73 were scanned using the F2 population and the polymorphic *** SSR marker RM128 on chromosome 1,the STS marker R03D159 on chromosome 3 and the STS marker R05D104 on chromosome 5 were found to be linked to the rice BB resistance genes in Y73.

This article describes the development and implementations of a novel software platform that supports real-time, science-based policy making on air quality through a user-friendly interface. The software, RSM-VAT, uses a response surface modeling（RSM） methodology and serves as a visualization and analysis tool（VAT） for three-dimensional air quality data obtained by atmospheric models. The software features a number of powerful and intuitive data visualization functions for illustrating the complex nonlinear relationship between emission reductions and air quality benefits. The case study of contiguous *** that the enhanced RSM-VAT is capable of reproducing the air quality model results with Normalized Mean Bias 〈 2% and assisting in air quality policy making in near real time.

Evaluating the emission status of light-duty gasoline vehicles and motorcycles in Macao with real-world remote sensing measurement

Roadside remote sensing measurement was used to explore the real-world emission status of light duty gasoline vehicles （LDGVs） and motorcycles in Macao. Both fuel-based and distance-based emission factors were derived using the mass balance method. The emission concentration profile of LDGVs illustrated the benefits of tightening emission standards at the source country or region of import. The distance-based emission factors for CO, HC and NOx of LDGVs registered before 2000 were 8.00, 1.04 and 1.36 g/km, respectively. The distance-based emission factors for CO, HC and NOx of LDGVs registered in or after 2000 were 1.16, 0.15 and 0.18 g/km, respectively. The fuel-based CO emission factors of light duty motorcycles （LDMCs） and heavy duty motorcycles （HDMCs） registered before 2000 were about 10 times higher than those of LDGVs of the same age group. As the emissions of LDGVs decreased more quickly after 2000, the gap widens for newer vehicles. The distance-based HC emission factors of LDMCs and HDMCs registered before 2000 were 4.81 and 2.91 g/km, respectively. The distance-based HC emission factors of LDMCs and HDMCs registered in or after 2000 were 3.52 and 0.93 g/km, respectively. The poor emission performance of motorcycles and their larger share in the traffic flow will cause them to be the major contributor to traffic CO and HC emissions. LDMCs, especially two-stroke models, should be the priority for vehicle emission control efforts in Macao.

Effects of pyrolysis temperature on the physicochemical properties of biochar derived from vermicompost and its potential use as an environmental amendment

The physicochemical properties of biochars, produced from vermicompost and subject to pyrolysis at temperatures between 400-700°C, were investigated, as well as their potential application as an environmental absorbent. Results indicated that the biochar yields were relatively high throughout this temperature range, but it decreased from 78.1% to 70.6% as the pyrolysis temperature increased to 700°C. The mineral nutrients and heavy metals in the biochars were also condensed as the pyrolysis temperature increased. Additionally, the pyrolysis temperature also positively affected the formation of total basic functional groups (TBFGs) and pore development. The biochars generated from vermicompost were characterized by alkalinity, high stability, high buffering ability and high apparent density. When the biochars were employed as an adsorbent for removing heavy metal ions, dyes and organic contaminants, the biochars generated at higher temperatures possessed better adsorption abilities of these contaminants, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the biochar at 700°C was 36.4 mg g-1, 29.5 mg g-1, 12.4 mg g-1, 12.3 mg g-1, 17.8 mg g-1, and 8.2 mg g-1 for Cu2+, Cd2+, methyl orange, rhodamine B, naphthalene, and nitrobenzene, respectively. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015.
