Synthesis of carbon-coated magnetic nanocomposite(Fe_3O_4@C) and its application for sulfonamide antibiotics removal from water

The occurrence of antibiotics in the environment has recently raised serious concerns regarding their potential threat to human health and aquatic ecosystem. A new magnetic nanocomposite, Fe304@C （Fe304 coated with carbon）, was synthesized, characterized, and then applied to remove five commonly-used sulfonamides （SAs） from water. Due to its combinational merits of the outer functionalized carbon shell and the inner magnetite core, Fe3O4@C exhibited a high adsorption affinity for selected SAs and a fast magnetic separability. The adsorption kinetics of SAs on Fe304 @ C could be expressed by the pseudo second-order model. The adsorption isotherms were fitted well with the Dual-mode model, revealing that the adsorption process consisted of an initial partitioning stage and a subsequent hole-filling stage. Solution pH exerted a strong impact on the adsorption process with the maximum removal efficiencies （74% to 96%） obtained at pH 4.8 for all selected SAs. Electrostatic force and hydrogen bonding were two major driving forces for adsorption, and electron-donor-acceptor interactions may also make a certain contribution. Because the synthesized Fe304@C showed comprehensive advantages of high adsorptivity, fast magnetic separability, and prominent reusability, it has potential applications in water treatment.

TI（I） in water even at a trace level is fatal to human beings and the ecosystem. Here we fabricated a new polymer-supported nanocomposite （HMO-001） for efficient TI（I） removal by encapsulating nanosized hydrous manganese dioxide （HMO） within a polystyrene cation exchanger （D-001）. The resultant HMO-001 exhibited more preferable removal of TI（I） than D-001 and IRC-748, an iminodiacetic chelating polymer, particularly in the presence of competing Ca（II） ions at greater levels in solution. Such preference was ascribed to the Donnan membrane effect caused by D-001 as well as the specific interaction between TI（I） and HMO. The adsorbed TI（I） was partially oxidized into insoluble TI（III） by HMO at acidic pH, while negligible oxidation was observed at circumneutral pH. The exhausted HMO-001 was amenable to efficient regeneration by binary NaOH-NaC10 solution for at least 10-cycle batch runs without any significant capacity loss. Fixed-bed column test of Tl（I）-contained indus- trial effluent and natural water further validated that TI（I） retention on HMO-001 resulted in a conspicuous concentration drop from 1.3 mg/L to a value lower than 0.14 mg/L （maximum concentration level for industrial effluent regulated by US EPA） and from 1-4 μg/L to a value lower than 0.1 μg/L （drinking water standard regulated by China Health Ministry）, respectively.

Local and long-range transport influences on PM_(2.5) at a cities-cluster in northern China,during summer 2008

Hourly PM2.5 concentrations were observed simultaneously at a cities-cluster comprising 10 cities/towns in Hebei province in China from July 1 to 31, 2008. Among the 10 cities/towns, Baoding showed the high- est average concentration level （161.57μg/m3） and Yanjiao exhibited the lowest （99.35 μg/m3 ）. These observed data were also studied using the joint potential source contribution function with 24-h and 72-h backward trajectories, to identify more clearly the local and countrywide-scale long-range transport sources. For the local sources, three important influential areas were found, whereas five important influential areas were defined for long-range transport sources. Spatial characteristics of PM2.5 were determined by multivariate statistical analyses. Soil dust, coal combustion, and vehicle emissions might be the potential contributors in these areas. The results of a hierarchical cluster analysis for back trajectory endpoints and PM2.s concentrations datasets show that the spatial characteristics of PM2.5 in the cities-cluster were influenced not only by local sources, but also by long-range transport sources. Different cities in the cities-cluster obtained different weighted contributions from local or long-range transport sources. Cangzhou, Shijiazhuang, and Baoding are near the source areas in the south of Hebei province, whereas Zhuozhou, Yangfang, Yanjiao, Xianghe, and Langfang are close to the sources areas near Beijing and Tianjin.

Characterization of PM and Microclimate in a Shanghai Subway Tunnel, China

A real-time monitoring campaign was conducted from November 11 th to November 15 th , 2013 in a Shanghai subway tunnel, consisting of temperature (T), relative humidity (RH) and PM 1 , PM 2.5 and PM 10 . The objective was to characterize PM and microclimate in the subway tunnel. Results indicated that median values of T, RH, PM 1 , PM 2.5 and PM 10 were 29.4°C, 29.6%, 42 μg/m 3 , 46 μg/m 3 and 58 μg/m 3 , respectively. Air quality in the tunnel was comparatively good, with 76% of PM 2.5 and 91% of PM 10 reaching relative standards. Independent samples t-test verified that PM 1 , PM 2.5 and PM 10 presented significant statistical differences between peak hours and off-peak hours (p<0.05). Notable weekly variation emerged during monitoring periods, which of all particles was as following: Friday > Thursday > Monday, Tuesday > Wednesday. Ratios of PM 1 /PM 10 and PM 2.5 /PM 10 were 0.49–1.00 and 0.56–1.00, respectively, which were high in outage and low in operation of trains. This phenomenon might result from plenty of coarse particles generated by mechanical grinding in the process of train driving.

The co-infection of rice caused by southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus (SRBSDV) and rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV) was widely found at many regions, such as Yunnan Province, China, and North and Central Vietnam. These rice viral diseases lead to seriously yield loss of rice. In this study, the proteomics technology of shotgun and label free combined with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) was developed to detect rice sample of a single or/and co-infection. The shotgun assay indicated that some proteins coded by SRBSDV and RRSV were detected via the mode of in-gel digestion, except for P5-2, P7-2 and P9-2 of SRBSDV and P4b, P5, P6, P8a and P8b of RRSV. The technology of label free combined with MRM indicated that P2, P5-1, P4, P8, P7-1, P6, P9-1 and P10 of SRBSDV and P1, P3 and P9 of RRSV were higher abundance in rice plant, and P5-2, P7-2 and P9-2 of SRBSDV and P4b and P5 of RRSV were lower abundance in viruliferous-rice plant. So SRBSDV P9-1 and RRSV P3 was selected as marker molecule to be used in detection technology, and the label free combined with MRM technology was established to detect two kinds of rice virus. © 2014, Indian Virological Society.

The pyrolysis characteristics of kitchen waste were studied and the optimal pyrolysis condition was obtained by analyzing the thermogravimetric curves (TG/DTG). Then a pyrolysis experiment was carried out using external heated rotary furnace with the throughput at 5kg/h and the heating rate ranging from 50°C/min to 200°C/min. In this experiment, the 3-phase products were collected separately and the distribution was tested. In imaging measurements on the fluid flow, the quality of particle image is essential to the outcomes of the velocity field. The method to eliminate the problems of refraction and reflection is to match the refractive indices of the working fluid and the surrounding solid wall. In this article, a comprehensive summary of the refractive index matching method was presented. Three fluid materials, two organic and one non-organic was used to conduct index matching and their effect were compared. Results show the perfect index matching is effective to improve the measurement accuracy of imaging measurements. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

This paper presents a distributed feeder automation algorithm based on local topology, considering switch action failure, communication failures and other confounding factors. This makes higher efficiency of data processing and communication and better maintainability of distribution automation system. The algorithm is described by using PROMELA. And the correctness and security of algorithm are expressed and examined with model checking methods. The results show that the algorithm is correct under conditions of certainty and safe under conditions of uncertainty. © 2014 IFSA Publishing, S. L.

Bacterial Community in Different Populations of Rice Brown Planthopper Nilaparvata lugens(Stl)

The structures of bacterial communities in the brown planthopper （BPH） Nilaparvata lugens （St^l） from different geographic and resistant virulent populations were analyzed by using denatured gradient gel electrophoresis （DGGE）. Results showed that the bacterial communities in BPH nymph from the first to the fifth instars varied with nymphal growth and development. The bacterial communities in the first-instar BPH nymph were similar to those in adults. Nine geographic BPH populations were divided into three groups based on the cluster analysis of DGGE fingerprint. The first group was from the Philippines; the second group was from Thailand and Hainan, Yunnan and Zhejiang provinces of China; and the third group was from Vietnam and Guangxi, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces of China. BPH populations adapted to different resistant rice varieties. The BPH populations from Mudgo （with resistant gene Bphl） and ASD7 （with resistant gene bph2） differed with those of the susceptible rice variety TNI.
