LOL: a highly flexible framework for designing stream ciphers

In this paper, we propose LOL, a general framework for designing blockwise stream ciphers. The proposed framework achieves ultrafast software implementations for ubiquitous virtual networks in 5G/6G environments and high-security levels for post-quantum cryptography. The LOL framework is structurally strong; furthermore, this framework and all its components enjoy high flexibility with various extensions. On the basis of the LOL framework, we propose new stream-cipher designs called LOL-MINI and LOL-DOUBLE with the support of the AES-NI and single instruction multiple data instructions. The former applies the basic LOL single mode, while the latter uses the extended parallel-dual mode. LOL-MINI and LOL-DOUBLE support 256-bit key length. Our thorough evaluations revealed that these cipher designs have 256-bit security margins against all existing cryptanalysis methods, including differential, linear, and integral. The software performances of LOL-MINI and LOL-DOUBLE can reach 89 and 135 Gbps. In addition to pure encryptions,the LOL-MINI and LOL-DOUBLE stream ciphers can be applied in a stream-cipher-then-MAC strategy to make AEAD schemes.

Predefined-time distributed multiobjective optimization for network resource allocation

We consider the multiobjective optimization problem for the resource allocation of the multiagent network, where each agent contains multiple conflicting local objective functions. The goal is to find compromise solutions minimizing all local objective functions subject to resource constraints as much as possible, i.e., the Pareto optimums. To this end, we first reformulate the multiobjective optimization problem into one single-objective distributed optimization problem by using the weighted Lppreference index,where the weighting factors of all local objective functions are obtained from the optimization procedure so that the optimizer of the latter is the desired Pareto optimum of the former. Next, we propose novel predefined-time algorithms to solve the reformulated problem by time-based generators. We show that the reformulated problem is solved within a predefined time if the local objective functions are strongly convex and smooth. Moreover, the settling time can be arbitrarily preset since it does not depend on the initial values and designed parameters. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

A path planning method based on deep reinforcement learning for crowd evacuation

Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is suitable for solving complex path-planning problems due to its excellent ability to make continuous decisions in a complex environment. However, the increase in the population size in the crowd evacuation path-planning problem causes a substantial computational burden for the algorithm, which leads to an unsatisfactory efficiency of the current DRL algorithm. This paper presents a path planning method based on DRL for crowd evacuation to solve the problem. First, we divide crowds into groups based on their relationship and distance from each other and select leaders from them. Next, we expand the Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) to propose an Optimized Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (OMADDPG) algorithm to obtain the global evacuation path. The OMADDPG algorithm uses the Cross-Entropy Method (CEM) to optimize policy and improve the neural network’s training efficiency by applying the Data Pruning (DP) algorithm. In addition, the social force model is improved, incorporating the relationship between individuals and psychological factors into the model. Finally, this paper combines the improved social force model and the OMADDPG algorithm. The OMADDPG algorithm transmits the path information to the leaders. Pedestrians in the environment are driven by the improved social force model to follow the leaders to complete the evacuation simulation. The method can use a leader to guide pedestrians safely arrive the exit and reduce evacuation time in different environments. Logistic regression is a widely used and efficient machine learning algorithm for data analysis. However, data is often distributed among different participants, and building high-quality models often involves data interaction, which might easily lead to sensitive information leakage. While some schemes have been proposed to address the data security issue through privacy-preserving technologies such as multi-party computation, homomorphic encryption, and trusted execution environment (TEE), they still suffer from some limitations in terms of security, efficiency, and model integrity and are not suitable for the secure outsourcing training. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient and lossless integrity-preserving training for high-dimensional logistic regression over vertically partitioned data. First, we utilize a block strategy to encrypt the data in batches and outsource them to a cloud with TEE to achieve the non-interactive training. Considering TEE's limited memory, we employ random sampling technology to achieve mini-batch training within TEE, which ensures the data security. We find that the cloud might launch the active attacks to drop the model accuracy, such as lazy attack and replacement attack. To prevent the attacks, we introduce an integrity protection mechanism to verify data integrity and reduce verification frequency using a mixed-probability checking method, including fixed and random probability checking. Detailed analysis has confirmed that our scheme is secure and integrity-preserving. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that our scheme can achieve lossless, non-interactive, and efficient model training. © 2024 IEEE.

In the domain of Vehicular Edge Computing (VEC), this paper addresses the complex problem of Service Function Chain (SFC) placement, which is crucial for the efficient deployment of cloud applications in vehicular environments. Our approach leverages Virtual Network Function (VNF) technology, transitioning network services from traditional hardware to more flexible, container-based edge computing frameworks. The primary objective is to organize these VNFs into functional SFCs, thereby minimizing service delays in VEC systems. SFC placement faces two significant challenges. The first is the sequential dependency among VNFs within an SFC, which adds substantial complexity to container deployment. The second challenge is the cold start delay of VNF containers, a critical issue in scenarios requiring swift response times, which negatively impacts service quality in VEC applications. To address these challenges, we propose a comprehensive model for SFC placement that considers the deployment status of VNF containers, acknowledging the complexity of this NP-hard problem. The core of our contribution is the development of the Single SFC Placement Algorithm (SSPA), a sophisticated, greedy-based approach designed for the effective placement of individual SFCs. We enhance this algorithm by incorporating a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique, making it capable of efficiently handling the placement of multiple SFCs. Our solution aims to improve edge resource utilization and mitigate startup delays associated with the initial activation of containers, thereby reducing service delays. Extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate that our algorithm achieves a 34.3% average reduction in service delay compared to four baselines and a 5.8% average reduction compared to other container-aware algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.
