In order to solve real-time rendering of massive aircraft CAD models, automatic batch LOD generation and real-time adaptive rendering methods are presented. By the methods, CAD parts are treated as handling targets to keep assembly tree, together with split algorithm to simplify massive model. Then model storage, rendering ability of computer and characteristics of CAD parts are taken into consideration for quantitative LOD generation. LOD levels are adjusted according to rendering load and mesh density based on accurate occlusion query, so the accuracies and errors among different parts are consistent, which also avoid drawbacks of traditional methods. Finally the methods are optimized for speed. The experimental results show that massive CAD model with tens of millions triangles can be finished LOD generation within one hour and rendered in real-time on personal computers.

Six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) haptic rendering is challenging when multi-region contacts occur between the graphic avatar of a haptic tool operated by a human user, which we call the graphic tool, and deformable objects. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for deformation modeling based on a spring-sphere tree representation of deformable objects and a configuration-based constrained optimization method for determining the 6-dimensional configuration of the graphic tool and the contact force/torque response to the tool. This method conducts collision detection, deformation computation, and tool configuration optimization very efficiently based on the spring-sphere tree model, avoids inter-penetration, and maintains stability of haptic display without using virtual coupling. Experiments on typical dental operations are carried out to validate the efficiency and stability of the proposed method. The update rate of the haptic simulation loop is maintained at ~1kHz.

Group communication is essential for multi-user applications. However, due to unpredictable node departures and non-deterministic network partitions, providing reliable and scalable group communication services is challenging when the applications are utilized by the users with heterogeneous capacities on a large scale. To address this challenge, we propose a novel replication scheme to achieve high reliability and low-cost scalability in group communication with following three features. First, it introduces a new concept of replication based on topological similarity, which empowers each node with an ability of measuring similarity between the nodes in topology. By eliminating the topological similarity between the replicas, it intelligently mitigates service interruptions caused by node failures and network partitions. Second, instead of specifying the number of replicas, it provides a technique for nodes to dynamically adapt the replication placement schemes by exploiting functionality importance of the nodes in the group- communication session. It eliminates the bottleneck problem and improves the network resource utilization. Third, the scheme is self-converging and it can stabilize within a few adaptations even facing a high churn rate. Extensive simulations show that it yields significant improvements in reduction of replication overhead and service interruption when comparing to existing approaches.
