This paper deals with the rendering issues of producing a realistic surgery simulation in real-time. In general, the visual fidelity of the simulator determines the degree of realism experienced by users. On top of the tissue, there is a mucous layer which is wet and semi-transparent. It significantly influences the surface appearance by reflecting and scattering incoming light rays. This paper describes a novel method to rendering such organs. It decomposes the incoming light into two parts, which include surface specular reflectance and subsurface scattering. First it uses bump mapping to disturb the surface normal in order to rendering the specular highlight. Then it uses an image-space algorithm to calculating the subsurface scattering contribution.

We present a practical routing and scheduling method to improving the capacity of ad hoc networks with infrastructure support. The performance of a large scale hybrid network with hundreds nodes connected by infrastructure and ten thousands mobile nodes is studied in this paper. We adopt a more realistic infrastructure assumption that is heterogeneous and has a finite bandwidth. Central of the routing method is using the P2P lookup algorithm to find the destination mobile node corresponded infrastructure node. We also model the schedule problem about how to allocate the wireless links and infrastructure links. A linear programming method and centralized greedy algorithm are designed for this scheduling problem, with a tradeoff between the computation time and performance for different applications. We evaluate the routing method performance under a small scale in-field-testbed and the two scheduling methods by simulation.

Level of detail (LOD) selection method is a key component in complex scene rendering and is widely used in time-critical systems. Many studies focus their efforts on developing the LOD selection method to deal with the problem which the scene contains small objects or objects with a single type. This paper gives a LOD selection method handling the situation that the scene contains multi-type objects while the data amount of these objects change dramatically. The preprocessing step of our work is using the extreme simplification way to simplify the objects with large number of primitives and using the quadric error metrics to simplify the small ones. Then we calculate the span of level changed to each type of object separately. In runtime, we organize all the objects into a max heap by using the importance factor for rendering. We get the top element of the heap and change its level until the total data of objects satisfy the condition of time-critical method. Compared to existing solutions, our method is more suitable to the situation when the scene contains different type of objects.
