Synergistic promotion of particulate matter reduction and production performance via adjusting electrochemical reactions in the zinc electrolysis industry

Heavy particulate matter (PM) pollution and high energy consumption are the bottlenecks of hydrometallurgy, especially in the electrolysis process. Therefore, an urgent need is to explore PM reduction methods with production performance co-benefits. This study presents three PM reduction methods based on controlling operating parameters, i.e., lowering electrolyte temperature, H2SO4 concentration, and current density of the cathode. The optimized conditions were also investigated using the response surface methodology to balance the PM reduction effect and Zn production. The results showed that lowering electrolyte temperature is the most efficient, with an 89.0% reduction in the PM generation flux (GFPM). Reducing H2SO4 concentration led to the minimum side effects on the current efficiency of Zn deposition (CEZn) or power consumption (PC). With the premise of non-deteriorating CEZn and PC, GFPM can be reduced by 86.3% at the optimal condition (electrolyte temperature = 295 K, H2SO4 = 110 g/L, current density = 373 A/m^(2)). In addition, the reduction mechanism was elucidated by comprehensively analyzing bubble characteristics, electrochemical reactions, and surface tension. Results showed that lower electrolyte temperature inhibited the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and compressed gas volume. Lower H2SO4 concentration inhibited the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and reduced electrolyte surface tension. Lower current density inhibited both OER and HER by decreasing the reaction current. The inhibited gas evolutions reduced the microbubbles’ number and size, thereby reducing GFPM. These results may provide energy-efficient PM reduction methods and theoretical hints of exploring cleaner PM reduction approaches for industrial electrolysis.

Hydrothermal stability is crucial for the practical application of deNO_(x)catalyst on diesel vehicles,for the selective catalytic reduction of NO_(x)with NH_(3)(NH_(3)-SCR).SnO_(2)-based materials possess superior hydrothermal stability,which is attractive for the development of NH_(3)-SCR *** this work,a series of Ce-Nb/SnO_(2)catalysts,with Ce and Nb loading on SnO_(2)support,were prepared by impregnation *** was found that,the NH_(3)-SCR activities and hydrothermal stabilities of the Ce-Nb/SnO_(2)catalysts significantly varied with the impregnation sequences,and the Ce-Nb(f)/SnO_(2) catalyst that firstly impregnated Nb and then impregnated Ce exhibited the best *** characterization results revealed that CeNb(f)/SnO_(2)possessed appropriate acidity and redox ***,the strong synergistic effect between Nb and Sn species stabilized the structure and maintained the dispersion of acid *** study may provide a new understanding for the effect of impregnation sequence on activity and hydrothermal stability and a new environmental-friendly NH_(3)-SCR catalyst with potential applications for NO_(x)removal from diesel and hydrogenfueled engines.

Nonpolar cross-stacked super-aligned carbon nanotube membrane for efficient wastewater treatment

Membrane separation technology has made great progress in various practical applications,but the unsatisfactory separation performance of prevailing membrane materials hampers its further sustainable *** study proposed a novel nonpolar super-aligned carbon nanotube(SACNT)membrane,which was prepared with a layer-by-layer cross-stacking *** controlling the number of stacked SACNT layers,three kinds of SACNT membranes(SACNT_200,SACNT 300,and SACNT_400)were *** characterizations and filtration tests were performed to investigate their physico-chemical properties,surface wetting behavior,and filtration *** with two commercial membranes(Com_0.22 and Com_0.45),all the SACNT membranes achieved smoother and more uniform *** to the hexagonal graphene structure of CNTs,the surface chemistry of the SACNT membranes is simple and inert,thereby potentially eliminating the covalent-bonding-induced membrane ***,the SACNT membranes exhibited a typical nonpolar wetting behavior,with high contact angles for polar liquids(water:~124.9°-126.5°;formamide:~80.0°-83.99)but low contact angles for nonpolar diodomethane(~18.8°-20.99).This unique nonpolar feature potentially leads to weak interactions with polar ***,compared with the commercial membranes,the SACNT membranes obtained a significantly higher selectivity while achieving a comparable or higher permeability(depending on the number of stacked layers).Moreover,the SACNT membranes exhibited superior separation performance in various application scenarios,including municipal wastewater treatment(2.3 times higher cleaning efficiency),electro-assistant fouling inhibition(or even self-cleaning),and oil/water separation(>99.2%of separation efficiency),suggesting promising application prospects in various fields.

Performance comparison of lithium fractionation from magnesium via continuous selective nanofiltration/electrodialysis

Although selective nanofiltration(SNF)and selective electrodialysis(SED)have been widely adopted in the field of Mg^(2+)/Li^(+)separation,their differences have not been illustrated *** this study,for the first time,SNF and SED processes in continuous mode were studied for Li+fractionation from the same brine with high Mg/Li ratios and their differences were discussed in *** a fair analysis of the two processes,typical factors were ***,the optimal operating pressure and feed flow rate for SNF were 2.4 MPa and 140 L·h^(-1),respectively,while the optimal cell-pair voltage and replenishment flow rate for SED were 1.0 V and 14 L·h^(-1),*** the Li^(+)fractionation capacity of the two processes were similar,the selectivity coefficient of SNF was 24.7% higher than that of SED and,thus,the Mg/Li ratio in purified stream of the former was 19.0% lower than that of the *** to higher ion driving force,SED had clear advantages in recovery ratio and concentration ***,the specific energy consumption of SED was 20.1% lower than that of *** study provided a better understanding and guidance for the application and improvement of the two technologies.

Sex-dependent obesogenic effect of tetracycline on Drosophila melanogaster deteriorated by dysrhythmia

Antibiotics have been identified as obesogens contributing to the prevalence of ***,their environmental toxicity shows sex dependence,which might also explain the sex-dependent obesity ***,the direct evidence for such a connection and the underlying mechanisms remain to be *** this study,the effects of tetracycline,which is a representative antibiotic found in both environmental and food samples,on Drosophila melanogaster were studied with consideration of both sex and circadian rhythms(represented by the eclosion rhythm).Results showed that in morning-eclosed adults,tetracycline significantly stimulated the body weight of females(AM females)at 0.1,1.0,10.0 and 100.0μg/L,while tetracycline only stimulated the body weight of males(AM males)at 1.0μg/*** the afternoon-eclosed adults,tetracycline significantly stimulated the body weight of females(PM females)at 0.1,1.0 and 100.0μg/L,while it showed more significant stimulation in males(PM males)at all ***,the stimulation levels were the greatest in PMmales among all the *** results showed the clear sex dependence of the obesogenic effects,which was diminished by *** biochemical assays and clustering analysis suggested that the sex-and rhythm-dependent obesogenic effects resulted from the bias toward lipogenesis against ***,theywere closely related to the preference for the energy storage forms of lactate and glucose and also to the presence of excessive insulin,with the involvement of glucolipid *** relationships indicated potential bridges between the obesogenic effects of pollutants and other diseases,e.g.,cancer and diabetes.

Variability of fuel consumption and CO_(2) emissions of a gasoline passenger car under multiple in-laboratory and on-road testing conditions

An increasing divergence regarding fuel consumption(and/or CO_(2)emissions) between realworld and type-approval values for light-duty gasoline vehicles(LDGVs) has posed severe challenges to mitigating greenhouse gases(GHGs) and achieving carbon emissions peak and neutrality. To address this divergence issue, laboratory test cycles with more real-featured and transient traffic patterns have been developed recently, for example, the China Lightduty Vehicle Test Cycle for Passenger cars(CLTC-P). We collected fuel consumption and CO_(2)emissions data of a LDGV under various conditions based on laboratory chassis dynamometer and on-road tests. laboratory results showed that both standard test cycles and setting methods of road load affected fuel consumption slightly, with variations of less than 4%. Compared to the type-approval value, laboratory and on-road fuel consumption of the tested LDGV over the CLTC-P increased by 9% and 34% under the reference condition(i.e., air conditioning off, automatic stop and start(STT) on and two passengers). On-road measurement results indicated that fuel consumption under the low-speed phase of the CLTC-P increased by 12% due to the STT off, although only a 4% increase on average over the entire cycle. More fuel consumption increases(52%) were attributed to air conditioning usage and full passenger capacity. Strong correlations(R2> 0.9) between relative fuel consumption and average speed were also identified. Under traffic congestion(average speed below 25 km/hr), fuel consumption was highly sensitive to changes in vehicle speed. Thus,we suggest that real-world driving conditions cannot be ignored when evaluating the fuel economy and GHGs reduction of LDGVs.

Effects of acid deposition control in China:a review based on responses of subtropical forests

For many decades,acid deposition used to pose a significant regional air pollution challenge in *** substantial emission control of anthropogenically derived sulfur and nitrogen containing gasses,both sulfur and nitrogen deposition,as well as the acid rain-affected area,have significantly decreased compared to their peak ***,particularly in the humid subtropics,are sensitive to acid deposition,as evidenced by soil acidification,sulfate and nitrate leaching in stream water,and elevated soil nitrous oxide *** in the total deposition of sulfur and nitrogen,caused a significant decline in sulfate and nitrate leaching from subtropical forest and subsequently in sulfate and nitrate concentrations in stream water,although there was about a 5-year *** delay may be attributed to the desorption of accumulated sulfate and continued elevated mineralization of accumulated nitrogen *** of nitrous oxide,a potent greenhouse gas,also declined in nitrogen-saturated subtropical forest soils,as soil water nitrate concentration ***,subtropical forests in China suffering from elevated acid deposition have begun to ***,the current levels of sulfur and nitrogen deposition continue to exceed the critical loads,i.e.,the assigned threshold levels in accordance with emission control policies,in more than 10%of the country’s land area,respectively,indicating remaining risks of acidification and ***,further emission reductions are urgently needed,also because they will help achieving goals related to air quality and nitrous oxide emissions.

Adhesive surface-enhanced Raman scattering Cu-Au nanoassembly for the sensitive analysis of particulate matter

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)has been used in atmospheric aerosol detection as it enables the high-resolution analysis of particulate ***,its use in the detection of historical samples without damaging the sampling membrane while achieving effective transfer and the high-sensitivity analysis of particulate matter from sample films remains *** this study,a new type of SERS tape was developed,consisting of Au nanoparticles(NPs)on an adhesive double-sided Cu film(DCu).The enhanced electromagnetic field generated by the coupled resonance of the local surface plasmon resonances of AuNPs and DCu led to an enhanced SERS signal with an experimental enhancement factor of 10^(7).The AuNPs were semi-embedded and distributed on the substrate,and the viscous DCu layer was exposed,enabling particle *** substrates exhibited good uniformity and favorable reproducibility with relative standard deviations of 13.53%and 9.74%respectively,and the substrates could be stored for 180 days with no signs of signal *** application of the substrates was demonstrated by the extraction and detection of malachite green and ammonium salt particulate *** results demonstrated that SERS substrates based on AuNPs and DCu are highly promising in real–world environmental particle monitoring and detection.
