We report a novel demodulation scheme for the detection of small Bragg wavelength shifts in a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor by exploiting the optical feedback reflected from the grating structure back into a 1310 nm laser diode integrating a photodiode. The dynamic strain generated by a mechanical vibrator is applied transversely to the fiber Bragg grating and the desired longitudinal strain values inferred from the detected sawtooth-like optical feedback signals. Preliminary results demonstrate the feasibility of this demodulation technique for strain measurement which could be further extended to fiber Bragg grating-based sensors for the detection of different measurands in general

This paper investigates the problem of dynamic protected lightpath services provisioning in optical mesh networks employing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). A variety of schemes for dynamic protected services provisioning have been proposed, supporting a range of tradeoffs among restoration speed, capacity efficiency, and scalability. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme, called p-cycles-based maximum protected working capacity envelope (PC-MPWCE), which can offer an attractive combination of features: ring-like speed, mesh-like capacity efficiency, and good scalability. To evaluate the performance of PC-MPWCE, we compare it via simulation with 1 + 1 automatic protection switching (APS) and two well-known shared backup path protection (SBPP) on NSFNET. Our simulation results show that PC-MPWCE can achieve much better blocking performance than 1 + 1 APS, and perform the similar blocking performance and capacity efficiency as SBPP.

We present a modified method to design photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with flattened dispersion char- acteristic. Using this modified PCF we design a broadband fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA), which provides a gain of 8 dB with 1.5-dB uniformity over a 260-nm bandwidth. Both the simulation results of total dispersion of PCF and the gain spectrum of FOPA are demonstrated.

Coupled equations are derived from the basic propagation equations and numerical solutions are given for both one-wavelength-pump and two-wavelengthpump systems. Several parametric amplifiers driven by pumps at one wavelength and two wavelengths are analyzed and the polarization independent parametric amplifier is proposed.

We find that second-order coherence as well as a Hanbury-Brown-Twiss intensity interferometer may provide an optimal approach for eavesdropping detection in the quantum key distribution based on two-mode squeezed vacuum states. With this approach, eavesdropping can be easily detected without sacrificing extra secret bits as the test key. In addition, the efficiency of the quantum key distribution protocol is enhanced greatly.

We theoretically analyze the generation of broadened and multi-peak terahertz (THz) radiation in aperiodically poled lithium niobate (APPLN), whose sequence of opposite domains is optimized by simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. The full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of the broadened THz radiation in our simulation is 0.26 THz. Both of the central wavelength and FWHM can be easily tuned by choosing proper objective functions. THz radiation with wider and flatter FWHM can be achieved by increasing the length of the lithium niobate crystal. The two-peak THz generation is also provided as an example of multi-peak with the central wavelengths at 1.68 and 1.80 THz, respectively.
