Enhanced reactive oxygen species generation: Synergic process of three-electron oxygen reduction and electrochemical ozone production by bimetallic La-Nb oxides

The anodic electrochemical ozone production （EOP） and the cathodic three-electron oxygen reduction reaction （3e-ORR） are effective processes for generating active oxygen species （ROS）.However,the activation of ozone （O3） by hydroxyl radical （OH） to form ROS poses significant *** micelle balllike bimetallic La-Nb oxides （LNOx） have been developed as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for both the EOP and 3e-ORR *** LNO20 demonstrated a 9.8%of Faradaic efficiency （FE） in O3production and a transfer number of 2.8 electrons in the *** calculations support the notion that the five-membered ring mechanism in LNO20 facilitates ***,the incorporation of La provides active sites that enhance the activation of hydrogen peroxide （*H2O2） and the generation of *** innovative approach synergistically integrates EOP and 3e-ORR,enhancing the activation of O3to produce ROS,demonstrating exceptional efficacy in the degradation of organic pollutants and antimicrobial *** study paves the way for designing advanced electrocatalysts for EOP and 3e-ORR and offers insights into utilizing electrochemical method to support other antibacterial strategies.

The alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)is a crucial process for sustainable hydrogen production,yet it requires efficient and stable electrocatalysts to overcome the high activation energy *** article discusses a novel strategy for enhancing the performance of Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide(Ni-Fe LDH)in the alkaline HER by modifying it with a frustrated Lewis acid-base pair(FLP)constructed through vacancy *** study found that the modified Ni-Fe LDH exhibited improved alkaline HER *** functional theory(DFT)calculations demonstrate that the introduction of FLP can activate water and protons more efficiently than monometallic sites,thus reducing the alkaline HER energy barrier and *** HER under alkaline conditions,the Volmer step involves an additional hydrolysis dissociation compared to acidic conditions,which is one of the factors contributing to the slow reaction *** paper demonstrates that FLPs can alter the rate-determining step in alkaline HER from the Volmer step to a step with a lower energy barrier,more suitable for hydrogen *** work provides new insights into the role of FLPs in regulating the mechanism and kinetics of HER and opens a new direction for the design and optimization of LDH-based and other electrocatalysts.

Integrating Friction Noise for In Situ Monitoring of Polymer Wear Performance: A Machine Learning Approach in Tribology

Friction and wear between mating surfaces significantly affect the efficiency and performance of mechanical systems. Traditional tribological research relies on post-observation methods, limiting the understanding of dynamic friction behavior. In contrast, in situ monitoring provides real-time insights into evolving friction dynamics. This study employs machine learning to monitor polymer wear performance through friction noise. The predictive accuracy of various machine learning methods, including Extremely Randomized Trees, Gradient-Boosting Decision Trees, AdaBoost, LightGBM, Deep Forest, and Deep Neural Networks, is compared for wear-type classification. Additionally, the LSBoost regression is selected as the optimal method for predicting polymer wear-rates across various temperatures. The results underscore the potential of using friction noise and machine learning for real-time wear monitoring, offering valuable insights for tribological system maintenance and failure prediction. © 2024 by ASME.

Electric Network Stimulation-Response Relationship and Its Characteristics under Time-Varying Amplitude and Frequency

The process that, the equipment regulates internal voltage's amplitude and frequency (A\F) to generate changes in the electric network terminal power, plays a critical role in determining a power system's dynamic behavior. Traditional system analysis relies on the "quasi-steady state"assumption of constant frequency to investigate the network, and the results are often reasonable due to the network's time constant being fast enough compared to the internal voltage dynamics. However, the increasing integration of converter-interfaced equipment with fast A\F dynamics raises concerns about the network's power variations concerning the A\F, including the characteristics of potentially impacting power system dynamics. To address these concerns, this paper emphasizes the demands for analyzing the network's stimulation-response relationships under the dynamic practice of time-varying A\F. It provides a generalized method to establish explicit expressions for the original stimulation-response relationship of the network. On this basis, the dynamic characteristics potentially impacting the system dynamic processes are analyzed and elaborated. In addition, this paper identifies differences in the system's dynamic behaviors that may arise from commonly used static network relationships, even for system electromechanical dynamics. This work aims to lay the foundation for further understanding of the physics and analytics of the network under the equipment-regulated time-varying A\F. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Start-to-end simulation for a compact terahertz free electron laser with a beam chopper system

A thermionic gun is endowed with a long bunch tail, which presents challenges for the compact terahertz free electron laser (FEL) facility at the Huazhong University of Science and technology. Owing to a large energy spread, the tail particles do not contribute to the radiation. In the original design, an x-direction slit is used in the dispersive section of the transport line to remove the tail particles. This paper presents an improved scheme to remove the tail by introducing an RF beam chopper system at the exit of the electron gun, to prevent a significant number of tail particles from entering the linac. The facility remains compact while effectively removing the tail of the bunch. The parameters of the beam chopper system are designed. Bunch parameters and radiation performance are analyzed via a start-to-end simulation. The findings indicate that 43% of the particles can pass through the beam chopper system for subsequent acceleration and transport, which saves the RF power, reduces beam loss in the linac, reduces background noise, and suppresses the sideband instability. Simultaneously, the beam chopper system causes an increase in beam emittance, energy spread, and an offset in the center of the bunch. These effects can be mitigated by a solenoid, linac, and steering coils. The simulation results for the FEL show that the micro-pulse energy is greater than 1.1 $${{\upmu \mathrm J}}$$ in the frequency range of 2.8–9.7 THz, and the maximum micro-pulse energy is 1.28 $${{\upmu \mathrm J}}$$ .

Photocatalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons to value-added oxygen-containing compounds is a green and sustainable ***,the efficient activation of C(sp^(3))-H bonds under mild conditions remains a significant *** this study,we prepared BiOBr/Bi_(2)MoO_(6)Z-scheme heterostructure for photocatalytic selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde utilizing acetic acid as solvent.A small amount of water as an additive established an acidic environment to facilitate the formation of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals(·OH)through the O_(2)→·O_(2)^(−)→H_(2)O_(2)→·OH ***·OH together with photogenerated holes acted as reactive species dissociate C(sp^(3))-H bonds,which is regarded as the rate-determining step for this reaction,boosting photocatalytic *** to the reaction system without water,the conversion of toluene increased from 23.6%to 39.0%,reaching a toluene conversion rate of 6110μmol·g^(-1)·h^(-1).Additionally,there is a slight improvement in the selectivity of benzaldehyde.

Defects response to precoated adhesive in Al/steel friction stir welded joint

Friction stir welding (FSW) has been applied for welding dissimilar materials in advanced manufacturing industries such as shipbuilding, automotive and aerospace. For the broad popularization of adhesive in FSW, the innovative coupling method of friction stir welding-adhesive bonding (FSW-AB) technology was designed to join 5A06 aluminum alloy to 304 stainless steel. The joints were fabricated using a single-component structural adhesive applied manually in the pre-lap zone. The joints were then cured by the heat generated from FSW. Macrostructure, defect generation and tensile shear performances of the joints obtained using three different rotation speeds and different adhesive thickness were studied. The adhesive prevented direct plate contact, but the FSW-AB joint showed more flash. Adhesive expansion occurred on the advancing side due to structural asymmetry and uneven heat dissipation. Compared to conventional FSW, the joints produced by FSW-AB exhibited significantly reduced hook defects in the pin-affected zone, a smoother distribution of hardness across the weld cross-section, and notably elevated hardness on the retreating side of the base metal outside the shoulder. It is attributed to the difference in the degree of crystallization between the two caused by the difference in heat dissipation rate. The ultimate tensile shear load of the FSW-AB joint reached 93.3 % of the conventional FSW joint at 1200 rpm stirring speed and 0.25 mm adhesive thickness. Furthermore, the fracture modes of FSW-AB joints were mainly normal fracture and shear fracture. © 2025 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers
