Under the background of “double carbon” strategy including large-scale grid-connection of renewable energy and the power grid interconnection, new situations have put forward increasingly stringent requirements for the safety and stability of power systems in recent years. In this case, the excitation system plays an increasingly important role in the power system. The article summarizes the basic principle of the excitation system, discusses the current status and development tendency of excitation system from excitation mode and core parts of excitation system such as de-excitation device, rectifier device, excitation regulator. The article also discusses the basic theory and development direction of the excitation control strategy from the aspects of AVR and PSS.

Lines-based rotating beam profiling algorithm using pixel ionization chamber with dead pixels

In a pencil beam scanning proton therapy system, critical beam parameters, including the spot size, spot center position, and tilt angle, are monitored for security by beam profile detectors such as two-dimensional (2D) pixel-segmented ionization chambers. A method, named lines-based beam profiling (LBBP), is proposed to identify the five geometric parameters μx,μy,σx,σy,θ of rotating elliptical beam profiles using several lines (rows and columns) in the 2D detector data. The method provides solid results even in the presence of dead pixels, which can be located using a wavelet analysis. Simulation experiments were used to define the number of lines used by the LBBP method and to characterize its performance as a function of the signal-to-noise (SNR). For SNR greater than 30, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the beam spot size, spot center position, and rotation angle obtained with the LBBP method are less than 0.16 mm, 0.05 mm, and 0.78 degrees, respectively. The LBBP method was applied to the data collected by a pixel chamber illuminated by an X-ray source, demonstrating the capability of identifying dead pixels and providing more accurate measurements of the beam spot size and center position than the standard Gaussian fitting. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

Characteristics comparison of SiC and Si drift step recovery diode

In order to evaluate the prospects of drift step recovery diode (DSRD) based on Silicon Carbide (SiC) in pulsed power field, the characteristics of DSRD based on SiC and Silicon (Si) are compared. The simulation model of the circuit based on Sentaurus TCAD is established and a trigger circuit using the saturated transformer is adopted. The simulation results show that under the same conditions, SiC DSRD has advantages in the aspect of rise time and it is less affected by pedestal effect, which is detrimental to the pulse quality and produces energy loss. The advantage of Si DSRD is that the amplitude of the output pulse voltage is high. By testing the voltage and the rise time of the output pulse, the influence of different factors including turns ratio and input voltage are discussed. For single chip of SiC DSRD with 5 kV blocking voltage, the turns ratio of transformer should be 1:5 to ensure that the parasitic inductance of transformer is low and the input voltage should be more than 500 V to guarantee that the magnetic core can be saturated. For Si DSRD stacked in series, the rise time and the width of output pulse is relatively stable and have little correlation with the changes of the input voltage, the forward pumping time and the circuit parameters. The experiment proves that SiC DSRD and Si DSRD have the advantages of the rise time and the output pulse voltage, respectively, which is consistent with the simulation results. © 2023

A GNN-Guided Variable Selection Approach for Efficient Derivation of the Optimal Solution in Unit Commitment

The growing scale of the power system has intensified the demand for computational efficiency in unit commitment (UC). This paper introduces a novel approach that addresses this issue by adopting graph neural networks (GNN) into the Branch and Bound (B&B), integrating the characteristics of variable selection (VS) within UC problems. Our method focuses on efficiently obtaining optimal solutions using the GNNguided VS approach. Specifically, we investigate the characteristics of the high-quality but time-consuming VS heuristic when solving UC problems. Then, the GNN incorporates these characteristics to make highquality VS decisions accurately and quickly. In the implementation, the UC model is solved using a highquality but time-consuming VS heuristic to collect training data. These data are employed to train the GNN model with designed label-smooth and depthadaptive mechanisms, which exploit these characteristics in UC problems for acceleration. To evaluate the effectiveness, we conduct various experiments on the IEEE118, RTS-GMLC, and a real-world provincial system in China. The overall performance demonstrates significant improvements (4.6x, 1.5x, and 1.8x, respectively) in computational efficiency. The comparison experiments show that the proposed mechanisms contribute to enhanced learning performance and, thus, further UC acceleration. Moreover, our approach exhibits promising generalization capabilities. © 1969-2012 IEEE.

This paper investigates the electromagnetic performance of a dual-rotor ironless stator permanent magnet machine for flywheel energy storage system. Since the stator is made of nonmagnetic material, the armature winding is exposed to the magnetic field directly and becomes the object of electromagnetic force. The air-gap flux density is not constant along the radial direction and the phase of the flux density is different along the circumferential direction. This makes the electromagnetic performance calculation, such as back electromotive force (back-EMF) and electromagnetic force, different from the common iron-core machine. Additionally, the uneven flux density distribution will lead to circulating current in the armature winding. In this paper, the expressions of back-EMF and torque are derived. In addition, this paper gives the condition for eliminating the circulating current between the strands of the ironless machine. This work provides reference for the analysis and design of ironless machine. © 2022 IEEE.

The degradation of the epoxy resin matrix in the core rods of composite insulators is the primary factor leading to decay-like deterioration and fracture accidents. Partial discharge in a humid environment is a critical trigger for this phenomenon. As an organic polymer, epoxy resin is prone to degradation under discharge, producing complex degradation products that can have secondary effects on surrounding materials, further accelerating the decay-like deterioration process. To optimize the formulation and manufacturing process of composite insulator materials and mitigate or even prevent decay-like fractures, it is crucial to study the discharge degradation products and mechanisms of the epoxy resin matrix. In this study, discharge experiments were conducted on anhydride-cured bisphenol A epoxy resin used in composite insulators within a closed humid environment. Changes in chemical functional groups of solid samples before and after discharge were analyzed from the high-frequency region to the fingerprint region. The main components and relative yields of liquid and gaseous discharge products were detected, and the primary reaction mechanisms during the discharge degradation process were thoroughly investigated. Results indicate that partial discharge in humid air induces instantaneous temperature rise and radical action, leading to epoxy resin degradation, generating alcohols and hydroxyl groups, which may increase the material’s hydration capacity and surface conductivity, thereby reducing electric field uniformity. Gaseous products such as methane, acetone, ethylene, and ethyl acetate produced by discharge pyrolysis may exacerbate stress at the core rod and sheath interface, increasing the risk of interfacial damage. Liquid products like nitric acid, carboxylic acids, and acetone may accelerate glass fiber fracture and sheath swelling. © Beijing Paike Culture Commu. Co., Ltd. 2025.

Consequent-pole (CP) vernier permanent magnetic machine (VPMM) has attracted increasing interest owing to higher torque output and less PM usage compared to the surface-mounted VPM (SVPMM). Via the simplified equivalent magneto-motive force (MMF)-dual salient permeance model, the deviated no-load air-gap flux density from FEA result is observed, which means the theoretical basis of CPVPMM has not been well established due to the unconventional consequent-pole PM structure. In this paper, an advanced MMF-permeance model is proposed which could accurately predict the air-gap flux density under different structure parameters of CPVPMM. Based on the proposed analytical method, the accurate sizing equation of CPVPMM could be established which would give helpful guidance in analyzing and designing the high-torque-density CPVPMM. © 2022 IEEE.

The high-voltage electron accelerator with insulated core transformer (ICT) has competitive advantages in the irradiation processing industry due to its high efficiency and reliability. The filament power supply (F-PS) is a key component in the accelerator, which provides the filament heating power and make the filament emit an electron beam. To control the beam current of the accelerator more flexibly, instead of using a traditional regulating transformer, it is a better solution for such applications to adopt power electronic converters as the F-PS. This paper proposes an optimized power electronics scheme for the F-PS based on the LLC resonant converter with integrated magnetics. A novel integrated structure that applies magnetic integration technology is used so that the number and size of the magnetic components are reduced. Modelling air-gap magnetic field accurately is also demonstrated to guide design for integrated magnetics, ensuring the stable operation of the converter. The designs are verified by simulation. © 2021 IEEE.

The series active power filter based on magnetic flux compensation (MFC-APF) may lead to low-frequency oscillation of the amplitude of power grid current in the transient process. In the previous research, it has been found that the equivalent impedance of MFC-APF will show obvious negative damping characteristic in the low frequency range higher than the fundamental frequency. This paper analyzes that it may act together with the load impedance to make the system resonate. After simplifying the system reasonably, the transfer function model of system equivalent admittance including MFC-APF and the load is established. The analysis results of the model show that the amplitude of the equivalent admittance has a resonant peak near the fundamental frequency, resulting in the corresponding harmonic component of the current in the dynamic process, which is manifested as the low-frequency oscillation of the current amplitude. Finally, according to the impedance characteristics of MFC-APF, an improvement method is proposed, and effectiveness of the proposed model and method are verified by simulation in Matlab/Simulink. © 2022 IEEE.

In the midst of a growing energy crisis, lithium batteries are attracting attention from various countries. With the massive use of lithium batteries in energy storage systems, accurately predicting the health status of lithium batteries has become a key issue. In battery management systems, predicting battery life is an important part, but it is difficult for current RNN-based neural networks to learn dependencies between distant positions, resulting in reduced accuracy. In this paper, we presented the EMD-Transformer method to achieve accurate prediction of battery life using only a small amount of online battery data. In the data pre-processing process, offline data were added to the dataset. Then EMD was used to extract lifetime degradation trends as well as capacity regeneration information. The Transformer model was used to get prediction results. Finally, a comprehensive SOH prediction result was generated by integrating all the separate results. Using a few battery lifetime data, we demonstrated that the RMSE of the prediction results is within 3%, which owes a higher accuracy than the existing Transformer and LSTM methods. © 2023 IEEE.
